May need a new cover oring, go with Vesrah or Honda, sometimes the cover o-ring gasket is fine for reapplication.

If it appears to be hard and does not feel rubbery but is very hard it will be likely to leak.  To be safe it is a good idea to go ahead and replace it.  You can use a dab of gasket sealer to adhere it to the cover so it remains in place as you reassemble the cover.  It tends to want to pop out of corners where it has sharper turns.  Jusmt a tiny amount will do the job... clean the groove with some acetone or brake cleaner...if your cover is painted you will want to wipe it out with a paper towel or cloth wet with either of the solvents.  The paint wmould be attacked by either solvent.  You may with to clean and repaint the valve cover while you have it off.

Or if you wanted to go crazy, then strip the cover of its rocker arms and shafts and have the cover polished.

Okay, so part # 91318300013 for the pucks (6 of them) and part #12391323000 and part # 12329323000.  Anything else?  Just want to cover all my bases  ;)

Going to have to look it up to cross ref the part numbers for those last two part numbers.  There are orings at the covers on the ends of the shafts and cover, for good measure change those, or you can skip them for now as they  are  easily replaced without difficulty, anytime you would need to do so.  If they are not leaking, why disturb what is not broken.

While you have the cover off you should take some good detailed photos of each rocker arm pad capturing its condition after you have given them a wipe down with some acetone.  You would inspect the pads for any signs of wear and also give the screw adjusters a good inspection for any wear on the ball end.

Given Dash was rebuilt not so many years ago and you have kept him in good tune and changed oil regularly you are not at all likely to see any wear to those components.  But, you won't regret documenting these things in some good high res photos for the day you need to open up the top end again.  Gives you a good point of reference.
Likewise checking the cam for wear and documenting it is a good idea.
Pull your plugs and slip a paper towel in the plug recesses in the head to keep anything from dropping in...setting your valves will be very easy then.  Likewise, after pulling the cover exposing any openings into the motor.  First thing you should always do is insert shop towels/rags to prevent anything fron dropping into the motor.  Same is true for oil return openings in the head.  Better safe than sorry.  A magnetic pickup tool or shop vac can pickup anything you drop on top of a rag that is not readily picked up off the top of a rag.

Ideas to spend more of your hard earned money...
If you do not have a higher perf cam or 650 cam in Dash, now could be a good time to drop one in.  A couple of the cam grinds would not need any mods to the pistons for clearance.  Do you know the specs of what Dash was rebuilt with?  A 650 cam would have very little impact on fuel economy and increase the smiles as it has a fatter torque curve and gives the motor a bit more power. Additionally, no need for hardwelded rocker arms, direct drop in just requiring care to get your cam timing right on install...not a hugely difficult job...just have to be willing to learn a new set of skills.
The other cams which are regrinds and hardwelded will require you to also install hardwelded rocker arms.  JMR, Mike R, can give you good pricing on the cams and hardweld your rocker arms or exchange them for a set.  Ideally, it would accompany some head work to take advantage of a new cam.  The 650 cam will require a new tach, electronic gives you better accuracy and flexibility, but a mechanical tach and 650 or 750 tach can be used.  The 650 tach is a different scheme, but the 750 tach shows a redline that is too low for a 550.  Easily fixed with a new decal for the face, requiring it to be opened up to change of course....not hugely difficult, just tedious work with care taken opening the crimp ring and then recrimping it.  Electronic tach route you could consider installing a modern gauge/panel with tach and speedo combined with turn indicators and your warning lights.  You can speed a lot if you went with a motogadget gps derived speedo gauge but the quality is superb.
But, there are less expensive electronic dash options with electronic pickup for magnetic speedo drive signal, very easy to install. The Motogadget and few other more pricey GPS speedos are round gauges that keep the stock like classic vibe going.

A nice modern gauge eliminates the need for the speedo and tach cables and other than some minor wiring if not buying the gps model speedo you will have a small wiring run to your front forks or to your front sprocket area for speedo and a wiring run to your coils for the tach pickup.  The magnets can be glued to a bolt head on the brake rotor up front or the sprocket bolt if going with stealthier front sprocket pickup location.

David

What year 550 is Dash?  Does he have the '77-78 cam/valve cover?

Assembly lube could be use on the cam lobes and rocker faces for reassembly but coating them in a good oil should be enough; because you don't have the oil pump out and it is primed, so there will be little delay (no more than normal) in oiling the top end.

Yep, just illustrates what a slippery slope a mod can have...

Putting some o-rings on the ends of your rocker shafts so it presses the shafts very strongly will lessen the amount of spin the early rocker shaft. Stopping it from spinning will eliminate any movement of the shaft in the cover.  It is that movement that causes the wear to be possible of the shafts in the aluminum cover.

Sorry for too much off topic since you just want to fix the leak.  I will hop on my desktop in a bit to verify the gaskets, parts needed to change the cover.

Ha ha. Thanks frank for the insert. I really am not interested in rebuilding Dash (he has never been rebuilt the motor has been left I touched) and he runs wonderfully other than the leak. Now when I get in side if something looks wrong then I will worry about that but for now just the oil leak parts. Thank you for all your help and responses

I did this when I replaced the cover. Time will tell if it works as well as stated, but it offers a little solace.

Well, I didn't have the cajonies to make the trip all the way to Co. Friday I rode the wing to the bike shop to return borrowed parts and the miss that it had for a few miles at Mt Rushmore came back and didn't leave this time. Not plugs, or spark caps and it does it with 2 different sets of carbs so I ordered a new dyna and coils for it. Thank goodness I got home from Sturgis on it OK.
Saturday I got the unused tent out for my grandkids, they played in that thing all afternoon. Now I know how to assemble it and the air mattress was awesome. I even took a nap on it later in the day. Maybe I'll make it for the next adventure but with a practice run first and a decent seat. Waah. I wish I'd met all of you in person.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Frank, just got my fuel bottle to hang. Want to play with the carbs a little first. Fresh set of plugs ready too. Make sure the throttle is working good enough and ear sync both carbs and a get good idle. No (easy) way with the tank on. I did replace a couple of those leaky o-rings from one of my kits. One was seriously bad LOL. No urgency though. Party week. Driving in to Telluride for Blues and Brews.

Ok guys, for next time , I will support 3 full days or more.for a few reasons..
First off it expands the possibility  of more attendees..
Second  I could have easily stayed longer and only left, as no one was there.
Had I known the member from Taz was arriving I would have stayed.

The above applies to a midweek scenario of course.
IT WAS GREAT to meet so many members at once, next year I want to ride with some of them.
As I  other trips , next day there is often fix a few things onbthe bike and kick back day..
Thanks Gene and the others for future invites.... it was a very cool and special trip !

Btw the campground was can excellent place, it worked out really  well for us, and I believe we offended no others.. so next time I bring Jimmy and we will really let loose..
Tip, Colorado is high, all of it...so  it DOES NOT  get real hot, and the night's are cool.. Dolores is 7000 ft.

Wish I could have made it, but I am still looking at the CX opened up, the G8 stator a CX/GL500 list member sold me wasn't...it was smaller diameter.  I am sure it was confusion on his part and he had another bike torn apart and had confused it as being from the CX/GL instead.  This was a few years ago I picked it up in anticipation/plan to upgrade the stator to a 250W output from the stock G47's 175W.  The G8 is from a TI ignition bike and the G47 is from the stock CDI ignition.  I have an Ignitech CDI replacement solution that does not need part of the stock CDI system with the replacement box.  So, it is an easy boost in power reserve capacity and cheaper than replacing a G47 stator.  Need to be able to run heated gear in winter and want to put a set of fog lights on the bike along with a few marker lights to give a visual signature that can be seen more readily.

The PO did a number on the bike cosmetically and that bugs me and I cannot afford to redo it but some of the crap he did is causing long term corrosion a foothold.  The motor had been stripped of paint & clear coat and I had not realized it was oxidizing as badly as it has.  You cannot paint over it, and stripping it without disassembly is difficult because there are lots of raised fin/waffle grid sections on the motor which are difficult to reach and scrape/brush the oxidation off, not to mention it is a hard coating of oxidation. I can't bead blast without tearing the motor apart and even then, very dangerous to do.  So, it is a quandry.  Refurbish & preventive maintenance costs rose as a result... beyond what I have funds to cover.  So, going to have to sell some stuff on ebay, etc. to boost mtce funds.

Yes, a longer interval allows more flexibility in arrival/departure and I always found club/group meets of 3-4 days to be ideal...allowing more options as a group for fun things to do while together.  Some clubs do a couple cookouts and charge an attendance fee and a few bring grills to serve as chefs cooking breakfast and dinner.  Steaks, bbq chicken, burgers and vegetarian options for those, if needed,  with sides of baked potato and grilled corn or similar easy vegetables that lend themselves to those things.  Breakfast being eggs/bacon/"fried potatoes"/chorizo/ or breakfast burritos with some bagels or other options ... if someone is good w/pancakes (like myself) then that could be an option.  Choices for breakfast chosen the night before so prep or plans for meal can be made so sufficient supplies and it can be done without much trouble. The contents listed for breakfast combine to make a great breakfast burrito or they are good separate as well.

Steaks and beef and chicken are purchased by one of the group prior to leaving with the meats put in a good chest cooler with dry ice to keep the  contents safely chilled.  Dry ice is available much more widely than a few years ago and coolers like a Yeti that are designed to keep contents chilled for days are the appropriate choice for storage.  Or, you make arrangements with a restaurant to handle your group with limited selections from menu so they can prep and have sufficient quantity as well as can fairly quickly prepare the group's order...
Two or three choices usually works well...the cost is known ahead of time and everyone can have fun while waiting for the food as well as it does not kill a restaurant's potential business by taking a large group if they have the space and can know in advance.  Work events where a project team was going out to eat for a holiday or celebration were done this way...takes more planning.
The food prep can be shared if others pitch in and usually a couple good "grill masters" are in agroup like ours.  Often  someone will be close and they can bring a grill along and a good source for the more expensive items like steaks or other beef or buffalo can be found  with good cuts of meat to ensure you are getting a good steak or other meat.  With a good sized or large groups if people share the work load for the meals it works well, so a couple people are not feeling like the servants/wait staff to everyone.  The cooks don't do the clean up, so that makes it easier on them...those kinds of things...

Plan some rides or other things to kick back and have fun.  Ziplining is popular across the country these days and it can be a great way to see some gorgeous views ...I know of a few places like that in scenic spots...
There are lots of things that can be done to have fun besides just hanging around and shooting the breeze but that is enjoyable as well.  In Dolores a group rate on the Silverton-Durango railway will drop the price a bit, but it is not inexpensive to do that ride.  So, activities to suit many budgets are needed.

Small regional get togethers that are short duration work well for single day get togethers.
The CJMC club, a branch ifyou will of the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club (VJMC) does rides and get togethers throughout the year at various California locations and they have an annual bike show.  Piggybacking on a regional bike show of note like Rockerbox , One Bike Show, Hand built Show, Ataskadero Hot Summer Nights (street rod/muscle car show), etc  and other MC shows can be a good way to meet up and take in a bike show and do some other stuff as well.

The challenge is to find someone who will serve as a coodinator and organizer for various areas across the country where groups of members might live or couldserve as a gathering point.  It does not have to be one person, merely those with the desire to see this kind of thing happen.

How about we do a basic badge layout for folks to print and pin ot tape to their shirt/jacket so when we do get togethers we can have a visual ID for other members and use that as an identifier when meeting at a larger event.  Having a booth or table at such an event would tie someone down to that area, which wouldn't necessarily be fun for them.  Sharing cell #s when various small groups connect could serve as a means to connect and gather as a group at a specific area...that works well also.

I know, I am quite verbose...just some ideas and thoughts along those lines for growing or expanding possible things to do...sometimes planning ahead for things like this are beneficial, but having open blocks of free time is good as well.

It is not like I am suggesting we get together and do a bike build/assembly and then to auction that bike off or raffle it or sell on ebay and donate proceeds to charity.
Sometimes for longer trips someone may need some repair help or run into issues on way to or from.  Having a lifeline or two to help that person through identifing people along the path whom might be able to lend a hand  or bike repair resources along the way is beneficial.  CX forum has a Traveler's Rest area for identifying helpful   resources or calling out for help when traveling by MC.  It is a nice feature.  Sometimes people will meet fellow members and there are groups out there that offer a couch for those traveling through an area...this is done by complete strangers...don't recall this couch sharing name .

I wish I had been able to make it to Dolores...hopefully another time I can make it happen.

Anyone want to buy an original  Nov 1969 build Honda S90 with Ruby Red Metallic paint (it is actually a candy paint) and chromed fenders?
It is in good shape but POs have chipped paint in many areas when examined closely. At some point tank had been repainted and could use a respray to match original paint on rest of bike much better.  New IRC Nr53 tires in stock size.  It has to go...
It is quite unique in that it is a Nov '69 build and it has a VIN plate on the headstock for US EPA compliance, Honda S90 Yahoo group has no one  having an S90 with a data/VIN plate like this nor a very late '69 build date...

Frank, the eastern half of Colorado is the Great Plains. Basically all of the area east of I-25. The Front Range as it is called. It is flat, hot, and dry. No mountains or trees (some). 3500 - 6000'. Some of the fun things to do: watch corn and wheat grow and cattle graze.

Anyone interested in a Central Coast gathering in late October/early November?
