Neutral Switch Oil Leak
« on: September 03, 2016, 09:30:30 AM »
I have taken apart my entire engine on my K8 and replaced all seals and gaskets. Put it back together and it runs beautifully however I have a slow oil leak (about 2 drips per day) coming from the neutral switch. I assume the O ring needs to be replaced. Does anyone know if this is a quick and easy fix? I am not sure if I remove the switch and oil will pour out. Does it need to be in gear or in neutral or does it not even matter? Will the little ball bearing fall out? Is it as simple as remove the retainer bolt, pull it out, take the o ring off the switch and pop it back in? I have heard the o ring can be a little tricky such as needing to insert the o ring first then the plug. Does anyone think I need both a new switch and o ring or just the o ring? Any insight would be helpful. Thanks everyone.

Change just the o-ring first, it may help.

Gear does not matter.

The bearing ball is part of the switch, it does not fall out.

Some oil will leak, but not much, it is not like oil pan drain.

Just go slow and gently and make sure the switch does not pinch the oring.

Size of the oring - it is 18 x something. Measure the one you have and try to find slightly bigger.

Or the switch itself could be leaking, you will see after new oring.

Put oil on the o-ring to make it to fit easier. Make sure that the wsitch is seated all the way in. Easier to fit it whith gear in neutral when there is an indent where the switch ball will fit.

Also, don't move the gear lever while it's out, the switch holds the drum from moving laterally.
Nothing major if it does move, but it won't seat in completely and you will have to get under there looking up with a screwdriver and line up the groove again. On a 750 anyway that is.
