Stev-o & RAF...wish I would have talked to you sooner :)  You are both correct and since this is my first 550 I am learning as I go too. This bike came to me with the carbs off and I took the air box off to do some further detailing. Was doing it the 750 way...carbs first air box second. Now I have to change my way of thinking on these 550's. I had some time today and took the carbs back off and did it the right way. Have the carbs and air box back in place. Now I have to dig into the service manual as the bike came to me with the breather hose off. Looks like it goes from the valve cover and either into open air like the 750 or there is a nipple at the bottom of the air box just behind the carbs on the left side. Not to be confused with the drain nipple under the air cleaner element.

Once again, I dont know the 550K that well, but believe the breather goes to the airbox.

No luck with the service manual. Pretty vague about the air box. Here is a pic of the open nipple I was talking about. It is located directly behind carb #1 and is actually in the air chamber in front of the air box. Suppose the vent could connect there, but the vent hose that came with the bike seems a lot longer than to go to that nipple. I will give it a try. To compound the issue there is another nipple on the air box itself near the battery which angles to the front.  Maybe it goes there? So basically I have 2 open nipples to figure out. If anyone can shed some light please do. I am not talking about the drain hose nipple in the air filter area. Thanks ...

The one you are pointing at on the plenum chamber is a drain hose port. Parts diagram will help you see it. Next is The breather hose goes from valve cover port
down and between carbs 3/4 and thru the triangle on the battery side, connecting with fitting on side of air box. Last hose goes from bottom of air cleaner housing straight
down, a drain for the water separator

Nobody knows what he is talking about.  When nobody will answer you feel like no one is reading your thread...yes, I stumble trying to be funny...
I must be ready to write a performance appraisal as that first sentence could be read two ways with polar opposite meanings. ;)

I am glad Nobody has you squared away. ( It couldn't happen to a nicer guy...   )You did pay a princely sum for this bike, it makes my heart skip a beat thinking you are just going to sell it.

Selling it RAF has to do with the amount of space I have here. Who knows, maybe no one will buy it and I will find space. I just have a real soft spot for the 750's. Those are a lot harder to part with.

Still questionable on that vent hose. I hook the hose up to the air box nipple near the battery and end up with 10 inches extra routing it between carbs 3 & 4 to the valve cover nipple? First pic my screwdriver is pointing to the area near the battery box where the hose is connected. 2nd pic shows the 10 inches extra hose I have? After digging through the Honda service manual I came across pic #3. Sure enough, that vent hose does go to the bottom of the air box like "nobody" says. It is part of the "new feature of the CB550" to minimize pollution per the manual. I have a feeling the PO decided to bypass it for some reason and got a longer hose to vent behind the center stand. I can cut it off and put it where it belongs, but does it really make a difference? I mean all the 750's vent to open air.

John, the way you have it hooked up, it looks right. At least for a 550 k0.
Can't say exactly why there is so much leftover hose tho, unless the later 550
like yours has a different pcv system. Maybe someone with more knowledge
can enlighten us...

EDIT pcv hose goes DOWN btween INTAKES 3/4 and then UNDER carbs on the way to triangle...sorry for mis information. Hope it didn't cost you a lot of time...

In reply 102 - that's exactly where it's supposed to go from the breather.

That said, I don't have mine hooked up on my 550, though it's a different year.

Yes, it does go where you have it...the filter stack with several of those no longer available rare parts  collect the oil vapor and the moisture and  oil that collect drip into the bottom of the airbox into the drain.  The drain hose has that no longer available pinch to open valve and their is a foam filter element inside that end of the valve. It takes any unburnt gases in that vapor and brings them back through the carbs to burn those vapors. Really no downside of using the design as opposed to venting to atmosphere.  You typically don't see oil stains on the filter when the filter stack is working with the foam and other pieces in that stack.  So, having the motor rebreath those fumes is more environmentally friendly.  The oil vapor is tough to contain otherwise and with the moisture it usually looks foggy on cold mornings and you don't have a mess on the motor from that vent if not rerouted.

It is too bad some of the cool hydraulic storage rack systems for multiple bikes are not much cheaper, they could make having more bikes in a more compact area, if you have the headroom to support their use.

That diagram showing the small sleeve tied to the frame at the top also looks
correct. Mine is as described/ edited in my earlier post, but is for a k0 model,
like the pic john posted earlier.
so there probably are differences between models. I'm getting confused too, so I'm gonna cool it and see what others say.

Don't back out guys. Your info is very helpful. Just for reference:
Engine #2100717
Frame #2100707
Build date 6-77.
The Honda spec sheet Gene attached shows the breather vented to open air. I will post a general question on the board for a 78 CB550K and see what I get...

Probably will need to get Mrs. Johnie's read on it being done if she is like most wives, it is a good thing they do not work in software development.  In that world having a fixed end date with 2% feature expansion/feature creep causes project failure nearly everytime.  So, the requirements for the product being built have to be controlled, frozen and any modifications to plans must be negotiated and schedules and even cost impacts taken into account...

So, it is a good thing Johnie is not the primary contractor doing that project.

If they were smart they would write in a completion clause with financial rewards or penalties and tightly controlled exceptions for any schedule slips not agreed to by both parties...
That can be hard to get a contractor to agree to because of the rampant schedule abuses in the building and remodeling industry.

Ok...kitchen almost done. Waiting on the tile then the electrician can finish. The 550...I found the plenum hose from a dealer in OH and got that this week. Also picked up some OEM hose clamps from my dealer. I can get those on this weekend...hopefully. Will have to repair the hose on the bottom of the air cleaner drain as that is not available anywhere. It is a 2 diameter hose broke off at the narrow. Then will do some cleaning on the inside of the tank and it should be a go. We are expecting a grand daughter to be born around the 4th. A lot of irons in the fire this summer. Plus, this is the time to ride not hide in the shop.

Progress...July 3rd became a grandpa again. This time a little girl Everly Grace. So with the kitchen about done and the baby here...today I connected 2 cooling fans, my auxiliary tank and she fired right up. Did the Morgan carb sync and she idles great. Just need to put on the tank, side covers, seat and take it for a test ride and will call this one done.

Last item - took the old gas out of the tank and it's really clean, but with a few stains on the bottom only I decided to use some Metal Rescue on it. I hate to mess up the nice carb rebuild that harisuluv did for me by having any junk get into them. The OEM petcock works excellent and the OEM in tank fuel filter is in great condition. Check out the original paint. Side covers just as nice.
