I almost got backed over today
« on: October 31, 2016, 05:28:21 PM »
So I left work at 5pm on my chobber today.  Pulled out of the parking lot and stopped behind a Ford pickup at the first intersection (4-way stop, 2 lane roads).  A Dodge pickup turned the corner in front of the Ford and stopped beside me, facing the opposite direction in other lane.  The Ford starts to backup, like he and the guy in the Dodge know each other and are about to have a conversation.  Next thing I know my front tire is lodged underneath the Ford's rear bumper.  Fortunately the guy stopped backing up or my bike stopped him.  The guy in the Dodge honks his horn and I'm yelling and beating on the Ford's tailgate.  I get the bike in neutral and start motioning to the idiot to pull forward.  He pulls forward and the bike is free.  I shut off the bike and get off.  The guy gets out of the Ford and walks back toward me.  Expletives are flying out of my mouth and my arms are flailing.  The dude is like, "no habla Ingles", but says "kill me"...wtf?  He jumps back in his truck and I kick a dent in the tailgate before he speeds off.  I tried to remember his plate number, but I was too freaked out.

I started the bike and took off for home.  Good thing I don't run a front fender.  It would have been damaged.  There's about an inch long scuff mark on one of the lower legs.  The front tire is ok.  No other damage.

Gotta watch these idiots closer and leave more room.

I had a guy do exactly that out side the bike shop I used to work at, a-hole had his radio blaring and he over shot the driveway  entrance, he had about half a car length distance in front of me when he slammed on the brakes and just threw it in reverse without even looking, totaled my front fender, even with my horn blaring he still smashed into me, he drove me back about 10 feet, the idiot went into the shop and apologized and said he'd replace my fender, he never came back. We had his rego number, we also used to service the Police highway patrol bikes.... I got my new fender eventually.... ;D   Freaky experience though, never felt so vulnerable...

Didn't have a guy back into me but had a dump truck start to drift downhill into me.  I put both feet down and started backing up as fast as possible...Larry

I haven't had this happen to me but I know the type of person that does this. I mean personally. My buddy is a clueless driver and gets in accidents all the time. He drives with no license and no registration because he got it all taken away. Once, this idiot spotted me on the road as we were driving by each other. We both stopped in the middle of the road to chat (middle of the day on a completely empty backroad, mind you). Chatted for a bit and then I took off, but he still had it in reverse and gunned it and went in reverse off the road and hit a fence. I love the guy, but I fear for other people on the road. Don't worry, though, he recently got a bike so he'll be dead by spring. I wish I was kidding.

This is why I keep a GoPro rolling when I am on a bike. You'll never win a fight with a car, but you can easily hand footage over when they take off after being at fault.

Good idea. The other day I was thinking about how motorcycles need their own form of "dash cam". Basically a GoPro in a waterproof case with g-sensor. Go ahead and run with the idea, I don't have the capital to make it happen anyway. ;)

I think they have something like that already. My son works for a high end bicycle place and I think I remember him telling me about one that can strap on your chest. The mountain bike guys have a lot of that kind of stuff. But if I recall it wasn't a Go-Pro, some other brand I think.

Maybe luck is the next step in evolution. These people could just be way more advanced than us, haha.

GoPro has a chest mount.

My gopro is mounted to my helmet so it sees what I see. Had people ticketed for almost killing me, driving without seatbelt, etc.

Picked up this GoPro clone up for around $30 at Aldi's this summer. Made in Germany by Bresser for National Geographic.

My cheap action sports camera does not handle high speeds well.

Many cheap cameras won't.

But its sometimes fun to find have on group rides.  Lo-fi documentary style.

How does it work? You'd think all the Chinese stuff would bring the price of the name brand stuff down. I bought a Chinese mini projector that we use when we go camping. Thing works wonderfully, and even has good sound.

That Bresser looks identical.  Good buy.
I got it for my son for his birthday and have yet to borrow it for a ride.
He's got some cool HD vid from ground-level while at the skatepark.
