Hello and...what do I have exactly?
« on: November 14, 2016, 05:37:11 AM »
Hi folks

Happy to join this forum. I have a cb750k, though I've been struggling to determine whether it is a K4 or a K5. I think it's actually a mutt. The case number and engine number match up to K5. The petcock is on the left, which appears to be a k5 change as well. But the color is flake sunrise orange from the K4s and the VIN says a production date of 6-74.

For reference, I matched the engine and case number using this website: http://www.sohc4.net/cb750k5/

All in all, I had concluded I have a K5 with some left over '74 colors but then the fellow in the Bronx that has been working on these bikes for 40 years told me I had a K4 because the date in the VIN is what matters. Then again, the production date for the K5s started in May '74.

Can anybody help me make a definitive determination?

Thank You
Hany

Another indication of it being a 75 is the larger turn signals. You really have to go by the numbers though. Parts could have been changed out in 40 some odd years. I would think if it had all of the changes made between 74-75 it most likely is the 75. Another thing besides the left hand petcock and larger signals would be the side stand. If it has the rubber pad at the bottom it's a 75.

It is a K5 according to both numbers.

PO could have changed the colors to their preference.

cool thanks. That's what I figured. I even got accused of having a K6 one time because I have a front disk brake. Definitely a mutt. A nice mutt though.

I wouldn't call it a mutt. Looks like a nice bike to me.

All CB750's came with a front disc brake. The F's have front and rear discs.

Yea my sarcasm doesn't come through the text. I kid when I call it a mutt, though I can't claim to have a pure original nonetheless if you go by the stringent standards most use.

As fas as how it runs, the engine is solid. But I've had to rework a lot of everything else. I've had it for just over a year and only put 4000 miles on it because it's been down more than its been running. I'm a newbie and I've learned ALOt on my own but I've also had to outsource a little bit of work too just due to spinning my tail a bit.

Alright if im going to be totally honest, it's in the shop now getting a few mods. I was chasing my tail again on a symptom of low rumbling and loss of power while up shifting. So when the fellow told me the carbs needed to come back out and the Airbox booties were totally shot, I figured I'd upgrade to air pods and a larger jet. The original exhaust was a bit rusted up and missing the baffles too and, for that reason and wanting a more minimalist look,  I also opted To go to a Mac 4-into-2.

So now I've definitely crossed the line into a non-stock bike so I suppose I'm mentally trying to tell myself it wasn't 100% original to begin with so I'm not infact desecrating something totally pure.

I know I know, it's all personal choice but I don't know why I feel guilty about "violating" some unspoken code of remaining stock at all possible costs.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

If it was a 74 with changed parts, idle adjust on the carbs would be on the left.... I know mine is...harder to get at..

Really?  It faded THAT much? the stock looks very different from what I have. But it does explain why the flake orange I used to replace a lost side cover didn't seem right either.

This looks like the right place to ask...
I'd like to retro-fit a tank like the one shown on this bike (although the one I'm eyeing is from a 73 750) onto my '78 750K.
The "new" tank has two tubes at the rear that the original does not.
What are they for?
Do I need them or could I just get rid of them?
Thanks for any help.

Marked as "73 CB750", so that's all I had to go by, but I can see in photos it very well could be.
Still curious about the tubing.

I would agree. Faded flake apricot is hard to distinguish from orange.

Your tank is a 75 Flake Apricot Red. Only sold in 75 along with Planet Blue. It took me over 8 months to find a flake apricot tank. I only buy flake apricot red tanks.

That picture you posted is a 76 Antares Red and not flake apricot.

The tube is a balance tube. You if you eliminate it , run two petcocks (involves welding).
Or have to tip it over a few times to get to bottom of tank.
If you are not worried about paint, dual petcock might be good, I would use NPT fittings..

Ah, ok - makes total sense.
Thanks!
I'm going to keep it simple, so will just get some fuel line and reconnect them.

In that case, this site is in error. The original link ( in my first post) has that picture for the 75ers, not the 76ers. In fact, the two appeR swapped. Here's the '76 pics:

Am I right in my observation?

Thanks though

The 450 tank may need a lot of bashing underneath... Better check it.... They do look good once sorted out..

Yes, it will.
Did a test fit yesterday - tubes won't fit around frame so they will need to come off and tunnel reshaped at the rear so it sits down properly.
