Bearing are STUCK in the hub.  Bought a blind bearing puller, no dice.  Put the hub in the oven for twenty minutes thinking the aluminum hub would expand more than the steel bearing, nada.  Put the bearing puller in place, flipped the hub over and put it in my press  and it just started to round off the puller lips.  Next step is a PB Blaster soak overnight and try again.  Any words of wisdom?

I had similar issue where mine were stuck solid. I was planning to replace the bearings anyway and ended up using a rawl bolt tightened against the bearing and then a steel rod inserted the other side and a large hammer. Worked a treat.

Pop the whole thing in the freezer for about 2 hours. Bearing might fall straight out afterwards.

Really?  The aluminum hub should contract a lot more than the steel bearing, no?

I had to look up what a rawl bolt was.  Guess I'm heading to Home Depot...

Bearings are out.  Rawl bolt for the win, but even that took some doing.  Propane torch to the hub until it reached about 300 degrees, I got one side backed out enough that I could slide the inner spacer tube over enough to put a rod on the bearing itself and pound that.  Even with that it took a lot of hits with a mini sledge.

Freezer doesn't work.  Aluminum expansion is 13 units (10e-6m/C) and steel is around 7 depending on the alloy.  If you drop both of them 20 degrees the aluminum shrinks against the bearing even tighter.

Please tell me that this inner sleeve on the bearing is part of the bearing itself, because I gashed the hell out of it getting the bearing out.  Also, the inside spacer tube is steel and there is nothing but a compression load on that so I'm going to turn one out of aluminum to save some weight.

Hi,

I have a new bearing kit I bought for mine a few weeks ago which I will open so you can see what you get. The sleeve is not part of the bearing but should be loose and is required.

Hi Tshrey,

Here are all the components and bearings pulled from my rear hub for your reference. These are from a cb500 but should be the same as 550.

The this is what you get in the All Balls new bearing pack. So that means you may need to machine up a new inner sleeve replacement for the one that you gashed.

.

Hope that helps. Also I may have to work on my photography as yours seems loads better compared to my piss poor mobile snaps.

Thanks, that does help.  Guess I need to press out that center sleeve to get measurements...

So I guess it was just a suction fit from the grease holding that sleeve in place, it pressed right out with my finger.  I cleaned it up and could probably use it but again it is steel and I'd rather just turn one out of aluminum.

Today I have to degrease the parts and get them in the blast cabinet to get ready for powder.  Time to make another Cognito order for spokes and a rim...

18x2.5" rim with a 100/80 Avon roadrider.  Keeps the same overall diameter as the front.

Ballpark, how much should I expect to pay at a machine shop to have my jugs bored out to accept the dynoman 592 pistons?  I found an engine shop and he said $250.  That seems like a lot to me, but I have no reference.

So two things.  First, obviously Photobucket now sucks.  They want me to pay $400 yearly to host my pics with the style of links I've been using for years or I have to go back through and figure out which links work for free.  If anyone knows can you tell me? Or what is the preferred way to put pics up in this forum?

Second, I have my rear wheel laced up and am reassembling it with aluminum spacers I machined between the bearings instead of the steel boat anchors that were there.  Can anyone tell me what the o-ring is for that is number 51 on this schematic?

Like to prevent binding?  I've only ever seen o-rings used as seals of some kind.  Why does it have to be there?

Ok cool.  Provided the rubber is still intact then I can still use it I guess?  I was just concerned that it was acting as some sort of seal, but what it would be sealing I couldn't figure out.

Thanks.

Actually, it dose act as a seal.  it keeps water out of the bearing area.

Trying to fix broken links by using my google photos account.  What syntax does this forum want for links to outside pics?  I tried the '[img]' but that doesn't work.

It will be an imbed code or BBCode (what flickr uses) or something similar.

For now I downloaded all my pics from Photobucket, cancelled my account and copied everything to imgur.  In the long run I want the links to be something I can control so I will still want to link to my google photos account.

Glenn posted elsewhere that the site can "host" the photos using the attachment (below) for each post.  This will provide thumbnails which can be expanded by clicking on the photos.  So that's an additional option other than just moving to google, flickr or imgur.

Some progress today.  Got the rear wheel all laced up and ordered bearings.  I just love what these stainless spokes look like against the gloss black hub and rim.

Also, for any of you who own something other than a 40 year old motorcycle I can't recommend Vcyclenuts tuning enough.  There are tuning options out there that will remove the fuel cut and other annoyances but they are hundreds of dollars AND you need to buy a power commander and tune that.  Just give these guys your modifications and they will build in all the changes, including fueling, to your tune for $200.  He also fixed the speedometer being over by 6%, made the fans come on at a lower temp and cleaned up the closed loop fueling.  I have more power than ever, it is smoother everywhere and my mileage went from 32 mpg to 37 on the last tank of gas.
