Motor reassembly is on hold a bit, I tapped the primary shaft bearing back into the case and mounted the shaft with the chain.  There is a single small mark on the bottom case from the chain; I have about 3/8" of slack.  Figured while I'm in here is the time to do it right.  Ordered a new primary chain, new cam chain and new rubber bumpers for the cush drive in the primary shaft.  The rubber bumpers are insanely priced, more than $6 each and you need 8 of them!  So $200 later I will be anxiously awaiting a package from David Silver.

While I wait it decided it is time to get serious about the frame.  My daughter has exceptionally good taste for her age and is into artwork and graphic design.  We photoshopped a cafe based on a cb550 and played around with colors.  The tank, seat and rear hump will be painted a deep burgundy metallic.  Probably do that on the rearset mounts as well for a splash of color down low.  Everything else will be powdercoated.  The engine will be murdered out along with the dash, decided on a middle of the road silver metallic for the frame (prismatic powders stealth charcoal).  Started working tonight to get the bushings out of the swingarm and changed my powder gun over to the charcoal, figured I'd give the top of the motor a splash of color and decided to just stack all the parts up to see how they look...




Originally thought I would do the clutch and sprocket covers gloss to aid in keeping things clean, but I like the texture powder so much I might strip them and recoat in texture.  Thoughts?

Also going to blatantly copy Cal's idea and use ARP 12pt bolts everywhere, waiting on a second order from Allen's Fasteners.

I personally like the different surface treatments.  It will give you a lot of flexibility on choices for the rest of the build.

       Oh yeah, I am really liking the look of that motor. Awesome job there and the choice of the color and with some small covers polished.  8)

Are there any header options for 550's that have the collector under the middle of the motor?  I would like to go from the collector to a modern carbon exhaust can like the Yoshimura R77 I have on my FZ1 (nice and deep sound along with being relatively quiet on a 1000cc bike, should be good on this motor) and keep everything under the bike (the center stand is gone, so no worries on that front).

Where will the system exit the bike if running underneath? Most of the MotoGP sets run beneath, but then swing outboard on the right to a tailpipe under the foot pegs and outside the right shock.

The MotoGP Werks 4-1 Yosh replica will do that.  The Hindle sold by Ripple Rock Racers is a 4-2-1 that hugs the bottom of the motor but still allows the centerstand since it goes underneath the motor but around its edges.

I can't shoot it right at the tire?  No tire warmers needed :)

I will weld up an outlet that dumps it out the side once I get all the dimensions I need.

I don't know if it is really good, but it is an AC/DC TIG and more importantly I have amazing welders at work that can teach me.  2 guys welded the entire 2.4 mile nuclear accelerator that I run and every weld is a work of art.

No doubt they are. Nuclear TIG welds some of the most beautifully welded. X-rayed every step of the way, super thin wire required to be used to eliminate any porosity or contamination. I have a really good friend who welded Nuke pipe at the Shipyard for 15 years. That boy can flat weld!

To weld thin walled Ti tubing, you'll need a purge kit set up, and preferably a pulse capable TIG box. Everything has to be SUPER clean when welding Ti, and the filler wire needs to be cleaned too, and remain protected while stored. Once the wire is exposed to the heat, it needs to stay in the Argon until you're done else it will contaminate immediately.

These tricks (among many others) are what makes welding Ti so different. The color of your weld tells the tale. Without a back purge, the weld contaminates from the inside out, and that will cause failure. Might start with Stainless for practicing your tube designs and welds. You can always swap the exhaust later with a Ti welded one. Or, if it escapes you, fab one from stainless that you weld, then get a guy from work to make it from Ti for you later. Best of all worlds.

Wow. I had no idea about the added requirements for Ti.  I recently got a Graves Ti pipe for another bike and the welds are pretty.

I think I will stick with my Ti handled knives from A G Russell and leave the black art of welding the stuff to the welding artists.

Little more metal work last night and some powder coating.

Pretty impressed with myself matching casting lines.  Upper triple is from a GXSR1000 - I had to get rid of the mount for the keyswitch and the attached bosses.  Went from this

My plan is to drill five small holes in the indented spot where the Suzuki logo went and mount my indicator led's from below.  I chucked up some aluminum in my lathe last night and made a plug for where the starter motor goes, I'm going to make this bike a kickstart only.  I want to do the keyless start that motogadget makes, I'm just not sure how it works.  Anyone running one?  Do you need to leave the dongle in proximity to the sensor all the time or do you just hold it in front of it like an NFC tag and then do it again when you want the power disabled?

Also powdercoated the CognitoMoto hub.  My spokes and the rim are on their way, pretty excited to be able to see the whole thing with wheels on it.

Nice job milling off the key hole on the triple.  The wrinkle powder coating looks great on the trees, too.

I'm not 100% certain, but you might need to remove some of the powder coating on the wheels on the mounting surfaces to the rotors. When Devin powder coats his hubs, I believe he leaves these surfaces bare, as not to alter the offset of the rotors.

The M-Lock needs only be positioned close to the sensor to activate the M-Unit. From then, the bike is energized. You re-present the fob to electrically disable the bike when you want to "turn the key off". While riding, the fob goes your pocket.

In addition to the fob, you can also program a glass m-lock key tube.

In theory you can sew this into your jacket or glove so that you don't need to carry any key.
Or under the skin like Cliff...

The plan for the Motogadget M lock is to get a "grain of rice" RFID microchip programmed to operate the M lock, then get it inserted under the web of skin between my right thumb and forefinger. But - getting a key tattoo there first. Sounds mad I know, but I want to try it, and if I ever need another bike to run off the same RFID, I can fit another M lock and program it to the same code.

That is beyond awesome.  That was his plan, did he ever do it?  I play a lot of sports, his location wouldn't work but getting an implant on the back of my hand between knuckles would work - just give the sensor a fist bump and the bike comes alive  ;D

He did. Haven't seen/heard how it's worked out for him though.

I'd question putting it on the right hand if the M-Lock is mounted on the left side of the bike. Accessibility in an emergency might want the sensor and fob oriented n the same side of the body or bike. I think I'll stick with a fob, thanks  8)

I prefer the idea of the fob.  What is the best way to allow plenty of radio transmittal between the key fob and the sensor without exposing your electronics to water/road grime?

       Nice!!!! Liking the details of this build and, as far as a fob or not< I'd go with the fob.  8)
I wouldn't want something like that required surgery.  :o
