Iridium plugs anyone?
« on: December 05, 2006, 04:49:52 PM »
Anyone using Iridium plugs?
I notice that they are all resistor plugs, whereas our normal plugs are not. Will that cause problems.

At $25 for 4 I may just try a set

I've got them installed. I did it at the same time I added a Dyna 2000, new 2.2 Dyna coils, and Dyna wires, so I can't tell you if it helps or not. I do know that a friend uses them in his big twin because he was always fouling plugs. He's not had a fouled plug in over a year and plans to run the same plugs for ever.

You don't want to try to gap them - some real hard stuff and a small firing tip. Buzz highly recommended them and stated they would substantially increase spark energy. Mike Rieckruns them and gives them a thumbs-up. He jets upward with them because the spark is much hotter.

Have I convinced you?

I've heard of some problems in turbo set ups with boost in the 15 to 20lb range. That's it and that's not definitive. Gordon said it all.

Are NGK Iridium plugs - resistor plugs?  If yes, are you using zero ohm plug caps?

That's what I'm asking. Haven't found any zero ohm plug caps yet. I know that I have problems using normal resistor plugs & resistor caps.
Any idea where to get zero ohm caps.

You dont need 0 ohm caps. You just use these plugs in place of the normal ones. They have a much better spark and are more efficient so resistance is not a big deal.

ok so i'm going to be getting jets in a couple of sizes up then when i put the iridiums in tomorrow. fortunately our local honda shop carries jets in dozens of sizes. i have 122.5's in it now with the k+n drop in filter in the stock airbox. i know this is a REALLY old thread but it IS something that i'm addressing and i thought that maybe others here could use the info too.

As you know it was a bit of a saga getting my cr750 to run - switched to iridiums and it's sweet as a nut now. The spark is less prone to spread and is more focussed with them I believe...

did you have to rejet larger when you went to them? if so how much? i'll also be going from a 4-1 header to a modified 4 - 4 from a 77 or 78 750k modified with either no baffles or much shorter ones (cant have it too quiet can we?)

using resistor caps, and resistor plugs,is kind of going against the grain,,dont you want all the spark energy you paid for going to the gap no matter what plugs you have??not just washed off?iridiums dont as such have a better spark as much as made from a more durable metal, that can withstand higher temps and run hotter thus burning off deposits better for longer.hey kaysystems,,are those ngk?

yes they are NGK and all the sources i checked say you do need to run either resistor caps or resistor wires. the plugs themselves are not resistor plugs. i specified that to the dynoman folks when i ordered them.

I have been running iridium plugs for at least two years with no problems at all. The plugs still look good. I think that I removed the resistor caps. I will check tomorrow and let you know for sure. "Hop on a Honda" is right they do cost us $18.00/plug here in Australia - maybe more now. Pat

David, I have checked my spark plug caps and they are 5k resistor caps. So I am running Iridium resistor plugs with resistor caps. Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Pat

the folks at dynoman also told me to run with the resistor caps.

Hi,

I ran my bike (CB400F '75) with NGK iridium plugs and NGK resistor caps. The plugs performed well, the last 20.000 km. The engine is starting better, and the fuel economics was slightly better from 20.3 (average over 10.000 km) to 20.8 (average over 20.000 km). The advantage is that you don't have to change the plugs every time.

I'll go against the grain and say that I had trouble with the iridiums in my 750. It instantly became difficult to start.

I ran out of patience and replaced them with D8Ea's again and I'm back to the engine starting when it sees my thumb approaching the starter button.

This is a mostly stock engine (stock compression) with a Dyna 2000. It didn't run as well at any rpm as with the stock NGK's. I tried different ignition advance settings and never found the cause. I remember trying Champion Palladiums back in the seventies without success too, I quess this one doesn't like that "precious metal" stuff.  ;D

Working a Honda parts counter, I never heard anything good about Iridiums.
