Should I get it?
« on: December 07, 2006, 01:52:36 AM »
1978 Kawasaki KZ650 for sale garaged for the last 2 years after running fine, I know its a DOHC but I didnt know if anyone here could let me know an opinion or not...

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/mcy/245308763.html

the only thing that worries me is the "Will need a some work to get it running, probably. "

I'm thinking clean and coat the tank and carbs and replace the battery and it should fire up...
if not it's only $200 and i can probably e/bay it or part if for more than that

I have asked about the title also, I'll update when i hear back

Thanks

We don't mind so much that it's DOHC; but it's not a HONDA!

By the way, either you or the owner mis-spelled "probably".  I'll bet what was meant was "definately" as in "you're in for some quality time with this baby!"   :D

Okay, just teasing...about the spelling that is.   ;D

Well, for $200, I would get it just to play around with. If nothing else, you could part it out like you said. Of course, offer him less.

They were pretty hot items, when they were introduced. Even at $200 and, if you couldn't get it going or decided not to keep it, you could still sell it or part it on ebay. Yeah, it's not a Honda and it's not a SOHC4 but, it is a Japanese bike. Could be worse.

I acquired a non-running 81 Kawi 650 LTD in March.  The PO did not know what he was doing. He dumped about $450 worth of new carb kits, coils, plugs, etc. in to it and could not get it to run.  I gave $400 for it, had it running correctly within an hour of having it home (filed and set points), put a thousand or two miles on it, and sold it for $1200.  It was no fun for me.  It was too small, not as smooth as my 750, just not as nice.

Just so you know Richard, the early VF750 Honda was a piece of #$%* from the get-go, there's not too many left now, and if you find one, give it to Derek (SeawebII) to attach to his big boat mate, as a bike, they make a great boat-anchor!

On the other hand, the Kawasaki KZ650 was a brilliant bike, it kicked the CB750's ass straight off the showroom floor, would do a genuine 120 Mph, and actually handled!

My point here mate, is don't think that just because a bike bears the Honda brand, that it's infallible, in the late 70's/early 80's Honda was building some real lemons, so before you lay your money down, do some research, or you'll cry yourself to sleep! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Upon review that there may be some major electrical issues with the VF and the KZ sold I'm just going to spend the money on a plasma TV instead

Hang on mate, I'm weighing up your options here, on the one hand you can buy a POS VF750, a foul handling, ugly hand grenade which will cost you more than you will ever earn just to put back on the road so you can then sell it for a massive loss, or a shiny new plasma TV? Geez, that's a hard one mate, ha ha! ;D

Buy the TV mate, it's too frigging cold on your side of the pond to play with bikes anyway! Stay warm and catch up on some shows............  ;D
