69 ct70 silvertag
« on: February 04, 2017, 06:51:30 AM »
I have another ct70 in the works.  This will be a restoration since it is an 69 silvertag that had many of the original unique parts.

After some vapor blasting by Nils.

Completely refreshed engine.

"8" bolts.  Replated many of the original "8" bolts but also picked up a new set from Yamiya.

Re chromed the rare front fender with the lip.

Fresh paint, Honda ruby red candy. Pics don't do this color justice.

69 Honda ct70's are a little different, this is what we have noticed,
1a) The silver tag on the neck is made from the same materel as the black tags are, but no date of manufacture.
1) Early silver tags have wheels with no bosses. also the spokes are flat in the center.
2) Early 69's have Front fender with a lip in front.
3) Headlight ring doesn't have as much detail around adjusting screw as latter models do. and is welded together at bottom latter models are one piece.
4) High beam light in Speedo is made of fabric not a lens. and inside there's only 1 rubber tube holding up the faceplate.
5) Early silver tag Brake levers are made of plastic.
6) Engine cradles have square pads where spark plug guard goes. continued beyond 69 production
7) Seats have bolt on tool carriers.
8) Taillight wire goes up thru frame close to where taillight mounts.
9) Early taillight has brazed on bosses.
10) Rear brake stabilizer is straight, doesn't have the bends in it.
11) Chain guard is held on with Philips screws.
12) Horn is black and has screws holding it together.
13) Exhaust pipe has taper end no stub.
14) One piece Stator Cover.
15) Wire guide on eng./Frame is silver not black.
16) Gas Tank Bracket is a little shorter. continued beyond 69 production
17) Large #8 on head bolts holding wheels to hub's
18) The center bracket that holds the exhaust is different on a Silver Tag 69, might be early black tag too. It is a little larger and has a "Dog Leg" in it so it reaches closer to the frame, and there isn't a extra long nut on the motor mount where it bolts on, Instead it has a short nut on the motor mount, then the bracket, then a lock washer and another nut.
19)Every bolt is large "8" on head should be added.
20)Spark plug boot should have black ngk logo like early z50's
21)Head can have a diamond and three or four lines
22)Air cannister does not have rear rubber boot on early models (has metal boot instead)
23)Carb has aluminum looking hose connections instead of brass.
24)Crude welds on chain guard.
25)No battery overflow hole above rear fender.
26)Thinner handle bar knobs.

Yes, similar to the early sandcast but not on the same level at all.  100 point restorations are worth around 5-6k to the right buyer.  I build them because I have a soft spot for the lil hondas.  This one will never leave my hands once it completed.

I'm about to start assembly of the H2 and have considered this too [already had Nils vapor the motor]

I used the same DIY plating method Rafi used on his K2.  I will put up the link when I get back home tomorrow.

As always, all things tweakin are ridiculously cool and well done.

Not sure if you saw my minibike thread.  It's in my signature.  Here's my '72 CT70 after Bonneville

I finally got my main project done so I can get back to my bikes soon.  The home is now complete for all of them to be together finally

Well, need to get the storage and benches in place to make some room first, then onto the bike projects.  It will be awhile before I get to a SOHC 4 though.  In order of priority:
1) CRF450X clean carb, clean bike and ready for a potential sale
2) VFR800 Clean and chase coolant seep.  Ready for sale
3) Bolt more farkles onto the CRF1000L
4)Replace CT70 clutch and helicoil intake tube bolt hole
5)CB450 Black Bomber - clean carbs and set timing - get registered here in Canada
6) Clean, rebuild, restore CB400F carbs (learn the art of plating:-))

Sorry for the hijack, once I started typing it felt good to make a list for myself.

Nice Kap!  I have a K1 ct70 as well that I built last year with a hopped up engine.

Awesome work space and great list of projects lined up!

I found your K1 and the ST90.  Great work.

Going to keep my K1 crusty and stock  It was the most used and abused bike I've come across.  Rear sprocket was completely worn, chain was toast, no compression, looked as if oil filter had never been cleaned, wiring hacked, bars bent.  Trying to put on similar patina'd parts and succeeding in most cases.  Only real deviation was the new, original style pipe.  Going to use it to get my girlfriend riding.
