a request that could help us all . .
« on: March 20, 2017, 08:23:56 pm »
I will be painting my F candy jade green . . or as close to it as I can get. Does anyone have an original side cover in that color that would be willing to send it to me ? I will be mixing some candy paint and would love to have an original to test against. If I can get close, I can supply the "formula" to anyone wanting it. Of course the side cover will be retuned, unless you want to sell it  :) Please? anyone?

I'm unwilling to send you my Candy Jade Green side cover but I will get it color matched and then send you the paint recipe.

How about a spray out of this recipe color on a piece of paper? I need to repaint these on my bike soon anyway so your request is just a hurry up for me.

Well I'm a retired teacher, does that help? I had a guy send me a Firebird shifter knob that was rare. They are not , or weren't then, being reproduced. They are larger than standard shifter knobs. I made a mold of it, then sent it back. I sold a few of the repro knobs, still have the mold  :) I need an actual piece in front of me. I'm going to do the mixing and matching by eye. A color match would be helpful for many I'm sure. I have never tried color matching  candy. I have used a spectrometer with solid colors. With a translucent, my experience says it can't do it. But maybe I'm wrong. I think matching a candy is just something that has to be done by the eye.

Thanks, Yes I have seen that and have seen a couple online that don't look right to me. It is also ridiculously expensive, because they "gottcha". $80 is only 8 OZ, half a pint. House of Color candy isn't even that much and that is the best IMO  :) I'm trying to come up with a mix that is reasonable. If I can't come up with something, at least that is there. Thanks again.

I used the VMR candy on my 550, came out pretty awesome. Well worth the price for under $100. Enough for a tank and side covers.

The Candy Jade Green is tricky.  I used VMW paint but (I suspect due to the amount of candy sprayed) the color was more brilliant than the stock green.  It would be best for you to have something for comparison.

Candy is one of those things that really cannot be matched from an original side cover because it simply is affected by the UV fading over time.  The Freedom Green and some other colors started going brown as they aged because of the formulation. Today's paints don't have that same fade characteristic.

Candy paints are incredibly tough to match, that is why it takes someone who is extremely talented to even come close to matching them.  The silver base color has to be laid down correctly and then the flake. The stock flake jobs are very hard to re-create. If this is a flake. The factory did not sand them as much as they are done today. There are some very good kits and often are as close as one can get to recreated the paint job.
The problem with candy paint is you have to build the layers evenly and you have to lay them down so you don't get striping. If your candy is too dark then it is tough to build the layers to match the color. The kits tend to have this worked out.

Your clear is on top of the candy so you have that to deal with the gloss not being totally there...
The only way to duplicate the candy is to practice doing it and keeping close records of what you tried/did and adjust until you have the end results you want.

The Flake Sunrise Orange can be created using HOK candy concentrate with the right size flake and the silver base.

The Candy Jade Green can be done, but you are probably going to have to experiment a lot with various candy concentrates to get the color right.   It is going to be far less costly to buy a kit from VMR or some of the other Honda Paint kit makers who have done that legwork.  Depends on how good a painter you are and how meticulous you are will determine if you can use a kit and achieve the desired results.  Body shops charge far more for candy paints and sometimes they tell you they can do it and then their results are not quite right to your eye when compared with photos and they will not redo it without charging you.  Thus, the nature of candy paints with their transparency which gives the depth of color as well as the reflective and other colors that can be picked up in flakes varies by the paint pigments and how your eye perceives the blend...

Go search for the Sunrise Orange paint thread where you see the experiments shared and the results one of the members had with coming to a Flake Sunrise Orange paint he felt was accurate from everything he had available.
The best example to work from is a NOS cover or tank that hasn't been faded.  Then there are the new production CB750 tank and side covers from Yamina in Japan.  They are excellent.  The price of an excellent condition tank or those made by Yamina of zinc steel (I think they are made from zinc alloyed steel) has far better rust prevention than the steel used in original tanks.  By the time you have a professional painter do the paint work, then you are not that far off what Yamina asks for their tanks and side covers.

My $0.05 on the subject.

Very good assessment.

The SOHC4 gallery has a nice photo with a good stock example of Candy Jade Green (see below).

Mine had some fade (and cracks in the side covers)

Not saying I am numero uno as a painter, but I have sprayed many candies. Here's one that I consider the most difficult "bike" I have ever painted. This is candy that had metal flake ( not just metallic ) flames. This isn't a candy like base, this is a true candy. Then metalflake flames laid over top, then cleared. And, the customer wanted the metalflafe flames, buried. For the inexperienced or ignorant of what really goes on in painting, this might seem like any other custom job, no biggie. Nope , this was a killer. Zero and I do mean ZERO room for error. One things goes wrong, you start entirely over again. And that means back to the gold base for the candy. I had both fenders and both side covers to do as well. So, I can handle the challenge.

One other thing, I'm not doing a concours restoration. I just like this color. What this means is if I get it close, close enough that the average Honda guy is happy, I'll be happy. It's a green with goldish undertones in my eyes and I have seen some look too green. Having one to look at while mixing and painting would be a great advantage.

Not into flames but that is a super awesome paint job.
Check out the "Rescue Metallic Green" it's a Jeep paint code, but it looks very similar to what your looking for.

They're still bolted together. Look down the holes where you removed the rubber pucks, and you'll see 4 x 6mm bolts. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I started the experiment, although I do not have anything to gauge the color upon. Still would like a volunteer. I know nothing about this little exercise is going to be exact, so if that means you can't comment productively, then don't. But for those of you that can, I want as many opinions as I can get. I have my own opinion about this first attempt, but I'm keeping that hush. I included three pics, one of just the paint, one with a white paper and one with a yellow and green sample next to them. Opinions about the hue and what you think it needs? This is a true candy.
