Let's play... Should I/Would You?
« on: April 10, 2017, 08:43:14 AM »
I'd like to get thoughts/opinions from those more experienced than myself. Would like to get thoughts on what YOU'd do.

Should I run in-line fuel filters to the carb? I did a POR-15 sealant and so far the filters are super clean but I'm thinking it's restricting the flow of fuel.

Would you run straight pipes or baffle them? I'm running the stock airbox with a 2-2 exhaust. I removed the rusted up baffles and the fiberglass wrapping was shot so I haven't done anything since. I can't seem to find exhaust fiberglass anywhere locally.

Should I mount up the engine guards I have? I can see the benefit but also like the plain and simple look.

Would you find a replacement oil galley plug or slap an oil pressure gauge on it? I currently have the right sized bolt in there to plug it but it just looks odd. I put the old oil gauge I had on there but it popped as soon as I started to zip down the street. I read I probably should of had a restrictor on it. It ran to 80 PSI.

Should I go with stock length cables or find a way to measure what I need for the superbike bars I have? I've read on here that people have run stock but I tried sizing up a (what I think is stock) throttle cable and there was just too much excess cable.

That's all I can think of for now. Might have more regarding fuel hose routing and what to route through the front fork hose guide (as I realized it's empty yesterday) but I'll do some research on it first.

I've attached a picture from 1976 so you can see the engine guards and all the old flair, the bike as it is currently, and then a close up of the engine so you can see the cable routing, fuel filters, oil plug, and exhaust.

I look forward to reading ya'lls thoughts!

Test if it restricts flow.  30 seconds straight into a mason jar w no filter.....and 30 seconds into another mason jar with a filter.  Compare volume.  ::)

NO.  hate the look.

I put the old oil gauge I had on there but it popped as soon as I started to zip down the street. I read I probably should of had a restrictor on it. It ran to 80 PSI.  are you having an oil pressure issue?

Should I go with stock length cables or find a way to measure what I need for the superbike bars I have? I've read on here that people have run stock but I tried sizing up a (what I think is stock) throttle cable and there was just too much excess cable.  shorter cables look cleaner

What Steve-o said. Lowes sells a small pack of pink building insulation, it's cheap and will last quite a while. Don't let it wrap over the inside of the pipe. Yes a PO did that. My bike would only run for a few seconds.

Alright 3 old timers and a hotshot; guess I have my answers!

I did do some reading that said the sediment bowl does a good job of catching gunk so I might scratch the filters. I picked up the small roll of multipurpose insulation at home depot; saw it the other day and it crossed my mind but was worried it would catch fire.

No oil pressure issues; it just used to have the gauge and I've seen pics with people having it on the engine block and thought it was kinda cool.

Now to hunt down european cables. Looks like they'd have to come from Norway or Germany for OEM; might see if I can find a set of motion pro or other aftermarket ones.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Front fork hose guide is for the front brake line, if I'm understanding correctly.

Plano, Texas.

Noted on the brake line and crap. I put SS braided lines and just ran it around the back.

- Why fuel filter? If tank is clean, no need. I have never had any use of it.
- Straight pipes will be boring with the loud sound. DB killer without wrapping that match?
Fiberglass wrapping is too restrictive. Better with an exhasut that does not need it
- Engine guards if you think you'll need it. Drop the bike will cost. The one on the photo look OK. I have seen bigger with additional lamps.
- Oil galley plug from Honda is cheap. Why oil pressure down there. If visible when driving, OK. Enough with pressure lamp
- Correct lenght of cables look always better. Importannt that they get not tangled with other parts as horn when turning or too short.

About fuel hose. Do not buy too cheap that does not withstand fuel. I had one that became really soft and kinked the line. China crap.
Bought new from Gates made in USA

Make sure that the fuel cap on tank can breathe.
I had a fuel stop I thought was clogged petcock, air inlet on petcock was rusted tight. Bike stopped.

Rear wheel: Are all spokes OK? I had a 16" rear wheel that had very bad spoke pattern.
Too short spokes and placed in tight X. It took not long until 3 of them was broken, soon after that 5.... If you have a similar bad design, replace rim with 18" DID at next tire change.

Not to my knowledge, Gordon. I'm on the east side.

PeWe, I'll be losing the filters since the tank inside is super nice now.

Just been looking into DB killers now. What wrapping is advised besides fiberglass? I have the baffles that I removed, would these work?(attached)

I don't think I need the guards(knocks on wood).

Solely down there cause I want to keep the handlebars/gauges neat and it used to have one so it gives a little nostalgia factor. This is the one that was on there.

Noted on the fuel line; I picked up some fuel hosing from O'reilys and it's Gates/USA. I might be ordering some OEM from 4into1 in the near future to get a thinner diameter hose.

Any way to test for fuel cap breathability?

I think the spokes are OK. I've attached a photo of the rear wheel. I have yet to order my tires and have been debating purchasing a truing stand and spoke kit to go for the 18" since I have the rim or just leave the 16" rim cause it's more ready to go.

Guess that could be another Should I/Would You?

Same. It fits nice and snug and no leaks and no hose clamping needed.
