Round 2. 76 750SS Aka Dark Lord
« on: April 04, 2017, 09:22:48 PM »
In the effort of trying to get my other one down the road, I collected a substantial bunch of spare parts, aka  Bunch of Junk according to the wife.  So just to spite her...I am going to turn it into a sexy little scoot that she will not be able to keep her hands off.  Great plan, huh?

Anyways,
76 750SS Frame and swingarm.  Pretty complete with all attaching hardware. No title.
76 750SS motor.  Needs complete rebuild.
Benelli Mojave tank.  To be widened and stretched about 5 inches.  Recessed modern flip up cap.
77 Comstar wheels.
4-1 collector, will find modern muffler.
Front end.  Gold wing or later model F with duals.
Not sure on fairing, but going to do something other than what is stock out there.

Overall, the bike will be as dark as possible with color and surface treatments.  Paint will be very intricate but subtle.  Low contrast.

First up...trying to get title for frame through state of CO.  Tear down motor and see what I am in for.  I will keep my eyes open for a second SS motor.

Here are a few shots of the mockups and photochop.

Everybody needs two! I also put my spares/take offs to good use on my second also.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

"Needs" is a relative term, but I like the way you think.  Perhaps "Everybody needs AT LEAST two!"

So it begins.  One part of me said.... use the Honda tank.   Faster.  almost ready for paint.   Then the bad guy in me said..... Nah, cut up the Benelli.

Sliced.  Diced.  Going to use a few more sections off the F tank I used for parts on the last one.  Looking for a good vented cap and tank section to use in this.   I have another Victory  tank.  I hate to kill it for this one.   But worst things have happened.

The shape of the Benelli is still well-preserved.  Cool!

Going with Harley female filler thread with low profile pop up insert.  Got the spacer plates tacked into tank.  Need to cut off factory mounts from old tank so it will utilize factory mounting.

It really isn't that difficult.  The secret is getting the patterns tight and welding it correctly.  The Benelli tank looks to have been completely MIG welded.  Not great for sealing seams.  The weld is too porous and will eventually fail.  You definitely have to seal the tank.  You are way ahead if you can get it TIG or gas weld, brazed.  I have used a Henrob torch in the past with great success.  Still lined it, but never hand any failures.  I will TIG this one and see how it holds up.  I have learned doing this stuff by not being afraid of failure.  You learn a lot more that way.

I do like to dabble, Sir.   :)  I build maybe 12-18 a year right now.  But paint hundreds a year.  Here are a few shots of what I am doing for a customer right now.  :)

That is some wild stuff, very talented painter.

More akin to art work than not...as talent exceed just someone who slaps a layer of paint or two on...
