seat question . . .
« on: April 26, 2017, 03:47:37 PM »
I bought a '73 seat pan and adapted it to my project Super Sport. Metal work is done and I'm ready to attached the cover. The seat has no "barbs" underneath, none are broken off. The pieces that are underneath appear to be there to hold the trim on the bottom of the seat? Am I correct? How was the upholstery secured to this base?

I wanted to know how the seat was originally done. I can mount the cover, a number of different ways. I don't need to purchase those pieces of metal to do it. But I want to know how it was done OEM.

The trim holds the cover on - the new cover is first stretched over and secured with alligator clips, then the edge of the cover is glued to the inside of the seat pan, then the strip is glued on around the edge with the tabs folded in to hold it on and finally any excess vinyl is trimmed off.

The trim and cover originally were one piece.

I thought possibly glued, but I didn't see any residue. I also had no idea the trim was originally attached to the cover on these years. Thanks

With the original cover/trim no glue was needed.

When glueing the new cover to the pan I try to minimise the amount of glue used - it only has to hold it while the trim is glued on (I used contact adhesive to glue the cover to the pan and super glue to attach the trim to the cover).

What does the trim look like? Not familiar with your seat, but I have seen some bike seats that have a chome trim ring with a U profile that slips over the edge, clamping the vinyl on. There is a line along the pan edge that suggests that's how it worked. Don't recall a Honda seat made that way but haven't seen them all by a long shot.

I bought the seat pan bare. But I do believe the trim was attached that way.
