The shock mount bushings in the swingarm got deformed during the powder coating,  so I ordered some new ones to replace them. I am trying and failing to get the old ones out. does anyone who has done this have any tips? Am I going to need a press?

It's a pain without a press, but so is taking it to a shop to get the work done.  I had the same problem -post powder coating - on my CB550.  I have repressed some of the details, but I essentially destroyed the bushing in situ, which left the outer "band" of the bushing still in the swing arm. I then cut through the band with a hack saw blade, which allowed me to deform the band and remove it with pliers.   

I think I broke out the center of the bushing with a hammer and appropriately sized socket.

Those bushing really were a pain, but I got it done relatively quickly once I settled on a strategy. I first used a 1/2 inch drill bit to work out the inner part. After a few seconds on drilling it got hot enough to break away from the rubber and pop out. Then I stepped up to a bigger bit to drill away the rubber. Then a bigger bit to drill out the outer part. That basically just made it a little thinner so I could bend it easily and pull it out. The new ones went in without too much of a fight. I wanted to get the swingarm in, but my order what I thought was a pair of dust covers turned out to be a single so I had to order another.

My front fender finally came in from Thailand so I got that modified and now I can send everything off for paint.



I can't help but place the parts on and get an idea of what it'll look like. If course I couldn't get the lower forks to stay in the right spot, but you get the idea. I'm really liking this front fender.

It came already painted, but has blemishes so even I were keeping it the factory color it would have to be repainted. Otherwise, it's a really nice piece. I would say equal in quality to an oem honda part. The seat that's on my bomber is from texavina which I'm pretty sure is Thailand as well, maybe Taiwan. In any case, it is a quality piece as well. Excellent fit and finish. I went back to them for the seat for this bike, as well.

I got a good bit of work done between last night and today. The gas tank had some surface rust in it and a PO had lined just the bottom of it with Kreem, over the rust, of course. So I started with aircraft stripper to remove the Kreem. That came out very easily. Then I rinsed it out with water a few times before filling it to the top with white vinegar for a couple days. I dumped that out, rinsed it with water a few times, then denatured alcohol, then acetone, and finally lined it Caswell. I'm very pleased with the results. Now I can send it down to Pete from Pete's Ponies for paint. He already has the rest of the parts.

While that was going on, I was working on installing a few more parts and started restoring the horn. That's all done except putting it back together. I'm waiting on a new rubber seal that goes around the wires.  There isn't one made for the CB77 but there is a company that makes one for the black bomber and it looks similar enough, so I ordered one and I'll make that work.









As the work day was winding down, I got a special delivery from Nashville, TN...




Not 1, but 2 more black bombers! So this project will take a backseat for the next week or so while these 2 become 1 and get all of the parts up for sale.

In other news, my wheels are done being trued by cognito moto and are on their return trip. I can't wait to get them back and get my tires on so I can mount the rear and set the front in place.

Damn you Dave - I wanted those two bombers!  Was watching em on ebay and the seller pulled the listing. I emailed him and his response was some BS story about not being able to sell them right now [yeah, because they were sold!]

Oh well, I ended up buying a couple more two strokes including a baby Kaw Triple...

Haha. I knew there would be some money to be made if I could buy them at a decent price and I didn't think that would happen if I got into a bidding war. I've tried to buy a few others recently and even junk seems to bring high dollars. In hindsight, I definitely paid more than I should have, and maybe even more than I would have, but I got excited because I love bombers. It's ok, though. I'll still make decent money.

What 2 strokes did you get? Pics?

Bought a '73 Kaw S2 Triple [350cc], pretty rough but the price was right.  And a '66 Suzi X6 Hustler, pretty good shape and it's a runner. Sentimental purchase as this model was my first real bike. Pics later....

I haven't been able to work on this much in the last week, but I am finished up with the 2 bombers and back on this. My package finally came with my horn rubber so I got the horn back together. I hope to get more done tomorrow.  I also spoke with the machine shop the other day. It's been a damn long time and he hasn't gotten my cylinders bored yet. He promised to get them done by the end of next week. Of course, I'm heading out to California next week for 9 days, so it will be several more weeks before I can get the engine together and reinstalled. I should have the painted parts back by then as well and hopefully chrome soon after. Mid/end of June should get exciting.

I got the rear brake put together and the wheel temporily installed as well as a couple other little things. Not much else I can do until I start getting parts back. I will do a couple other small things like rebuild the petcock, put the carbs back together, and maybe some other little things.

I don't much care for the sticker, it's definitely coming off.

I tried to make a little more progress with what I have. Got the front brake together and mocked up the front end and rebuilt and painted the starter solenoid. The brake linkage couldn't be rechromed because it doesn't come apart so they wouldn't do them. I tried out the "chrome plating" paint. I think it came out OK. Doesn't really look chrome, more like a satiny silver. Pete has finished up painting my fenders and sent them back, but I haven't gotten them in yet. I leave tomorrow for California for a week, so there won't be any work for the next little bit. I should have a lot of parts back when I get back, though, so, hopefully I cant really make some significant dents when I return.

I got back from vacation and had a package from pete with my fenders. He did a great job with them. I am dying to get the green parts back from him so I can really start getting this thing together.

Still waiting on the machine shop with my top end and the chrome shop. They're really taking their sweet time. My seat has shipped, though. Hopefully I'll have it soon.

Yes, they are stock length. I wanted to keep the suspension geometry as it was designed, just not old

I picked up my top end from the machine shop the other day. The cylinders were bored 4th over and valve job for the head. I got it assembled and cleaned up today ready for paint later this weekend, if I get the time. I meant to take pics along the way, but I just got busy and forgot.
