Where to find 16 Tooth Sprocket for CB550?
« on: May 06, 2017, 05:48:38 PM »
Hi All,

Ive been reading some past threads on sprocket sizes and saw that dropping down to a 16 tooth sprocket on the CB550 makes it a bit more quicker but shorter top end. From what i read, everyone who has downsized to a 16t has been happy with it.

The only thing I couldn't find is where i can find one? Anyone have a source they can share?

Just sent sprocket specialists an email.

Not sure about the cb650 sprockets on a 550. Will have to do some research.

I've yet to mount it though.

650 sprockets will work. But dude, I have one (JT) brand new I'll send you, just pay shipping. The eBay listing was mislabeled, I needed a 520 but it's a 530. Didn't feel like returning it.

One thing is that I did some lathe testing on it, which failed completely. It has marks where my carbide tool skated across the face but didn't remove any material. Still %100 functional and case hardened. PM me your address if you're interested, I can ship it out today.

But yeah, Sprocket Specialists is a great place. I ordered the correct 520 sprocket from him. Phone is the best way to reach him (Lance). He doesn't like to reply to emails. Also his shipping is very fast.

There is a difference in 550 to 650 sprockets. The 650 sprocket has one shoulder where the 550 has a shoulder on either side. It looks like they'll perform the exact same because location on the output shaft is determined by the toothed plate that screws into the sprocket. It'll put both sprockets in the same alignment. I just tested it on my spare 550 motor and they both have the same amount of play if I wiggle them back and forth after bolting them in.

Here's the 16t that I can send you. You can see the lathe marks. It hasn't been ridden with. This is a 650 sprocket.

650 left - 550 right

So in conclusion, yes the 650 sprocket will work just fine on a 550 and vice versa.

I had a 16 tooth on my 550 for awhile, and really enjoyed the extra zip through the gears, but after riding it for a few hundred miles, I didn't like the extra rpm's at 70-80 mph because it didn't seem like an effortless sweet spot anymore.  The 17 brought it back.  Even on a racetrack where I thought the 16 would be beneficial, and it was in the corners, it tapped out too soon (shorter top speed) on the straight away.  It's a compromise either way.
