I left motorcycling in 1986. Got back into it after my wife died. I don't have the time to keep up with "modern bikes" , nor do I have much interest in most of them as every bike looks like a transformer....Larry

MoMo, just not interested in tasting that expensive koolaid to buy one and lots of dealers don't like letting people take test rides these days unless they are very serious or show they are able to buy one if they like it.  I don't have the funds to go bike shopping, so I will watch and throw pebbles from my glass outhouse...

I intend to buy a new bike down the road a few years.  Problem is a serious job loss and long period of unemployment has left me with no ability to consider other options at this time.  Returning to school this fall to train for my next career.  Do not know what bike it will be.  Likely Honda or Suzuki and adventure touring or just touring.  The sohc will be more of a fun city and country road bike.

good way to look at it.  I've only owned two new cars(I did lease 3 against the old photo business I had before being squashed by the digital era) and three maybe 4 new motorcycles in the 55 year span that I've operated vehicles.  Wife used to call me cheap, I call me frugal ....Larry

I've only owned one new bike, my first CB750, and am leasing a new car which I'll buy at the end of the lease period, and with luck it'll last me until they carry me out feet first. I actually wanted to buy a shiny new Indian Chief, but my little $500 Subaru couldn't handle the 1000 mile weekly commute to Canberra, so my Indian dreaming was pushed aside for the sake of practicality.

I've just found a new bike that we can probably all enjoy, it's cheap, simple, and won't make anyone feel like a Transformer!

Back to the FuglyOne,  rattle canned and coated with 2K clear.  Probably could have used another coat but I only had one can.  Some surface dust and mild orange peel, okay from 10 feet.  Remedies to rectify?  thanks...Larry

Back to the FuglyOne,  rattle canned and coated with 2K clear.  Probably could have used another coat but I only had one can.  Some surface dust and mild orange peel, okay from 10 feet.  Remedies to rectify?  thanks...Larry

wet sanding will take the junk out of the clear and smooth over some of the orange peel, but you need a decent coat to work with. I don't know how much a rattle can can do that. If it is in the budget my suggestion would be to wetsand with 800, then 1000, then 2000 grit sand paper and then apply a fresh topcoat of clear out of the cans (use two if necessary). Then wetsand the fresh clear with 800, 1000, 2000 again, and finish off with a fine polishing compound and glaze.

The quality of the paint and how it is applied actually is a very small part of the process and getting a good shine (although it is important to longevity), the prep and after treatment is what determines shine. I have gotten show car level smoothness and shine out of Rustoleum single stage by wetsanding between coats (usually put on 6 coats), it just doesn't last long because the standard Rustoleum is not UV protected. You can correct most minor paint texture issues with lots of elbow grease, the amount of work is dependent on how much you have to correct.

with rattle cans the biggest drawback is that the paint tends to be thin. I don't think there is much you can do about the color coat now, and if you have good coverage, work with the clear on top to make it shine. 4-5 coats of clear should give you enough to work with.

Larry if you are going  to order in cans of SpramMax 2k clear, be aware it has a shelf life so, verify that the cans are fresh and you will have a longer window.
Repaintsupply.com has good prices but I would verify the shipping to see if it needs the ORM-D hazardous label beyond x# of cans or if it is any quantity.  You do know that once you start a can you have to use all ypu want out of it in less than 48 hours if I remember correctly.  As you know, Use proper skin and breathing protection as the stuff is lethal when mishandled; it does not take much of that stuff to permanently give you problems.  If you are anything like me, you have enough health issues to deal with while aging to not add another that can be avoided.

Nice colorful Yamaha!  If you want to give it some love after having it a while you can always repaint it to make it look even better or color sand out the orange peel and clear it with 2-3 good coats of SprayMax.


Were it a rare or much loved bike, then it makes sense to do it up nice, otherwise she is nice enough, don't waste any more lipstick on her and enjoy riding her.  You can ride it like you stole it without too much regrets I would say.

Well,  I think I found out why the clear orange peeled.......................can was 4 years outdated .  I had used Spray Max before with very good results. I've been using the FuglyOne to commute back and forth to work(still ride every day at 70 and plan to continue as long as able).  It is quite a bit easier to pull the Seca out for short hauls rather than deal with the Concours or Katana.  On the Concours today as I need to pick up 250' 12 gauge Romex to replace the 50 year old cloth covered, brittle crap in my shop.  Lucky the place didn't ignite...Larry

Well done Larry, I'm always inspired by senior citizens who are still riding and loving it. I rode up into the hills on my magnificent little VFR750 (that I bought from a 71 year old who'd just given up riding due to ill health) a few months ago and bumped into some old farts on pretend Harley's who were out for a ride, apart from their poor motorcycling choices they were good blokes, and the oldest was 83! I really hope that I'll still be riding in a quarter century's time, I don't have any other hobbies............
