What tyres are these
« on: July 19, 2017, 07:54:33 AM »
Hi all

Can anyone tell me what tyres these are? Would like to fit them to my CB650 project.

Thanks!

Not sure specifically about the ones in the pictures, but if you're after the knobby look and don't want to listen to people telling you how unsafe they are, take a look at Pirelli MT90ATs. To clarify, people will still tell you how unsafe they are, but these are solid tires and so long as you're not trying to break records on curvy roads, they'll handle just fine.

Also, if you're after THAT knobby look in particular, then pay no mind to other people who tell you how stupid they are. Just so long as you understand that they're not as good as road tires and are good with that, then who cares. You do you.

There are plenty of 80/20 tires out there that are completely safe for road use. Look at the Kenda 761. I have them on my Ascot.

Thanks Atltech for the info, I understand I won't be wearing out my knee pads with these but I think they look cool if you're just cruising   8)

It looks like the rear tire says Shinko on it, but they look a lot like my favorite tire the Michelin Anakee Wild Dual Sport.

Conti TKC80?

I run the TKC80 twinduros on my sportster. good tire in soft beach sand, ok on the road. I use the bike to haul a surfboard to the beach so for me it works. I wouldn't ride them purely on pavement 100% of the time.

If you have never ridden a dirt tire on pavement, be prepared for a culture shock. The heavier the bike the worse it performs too.

I'm not going to address the safety issue, everybody else has already brought it up that it isn't ideal. Hope you never have to panic stop. Just understand that if you run a real knobby tire on the street and you don't use it off road at all, that's kind of a joke at your expense. most people with riding experience will look at it and probably won't think you are cool for doing this, and will have a good laugh about it. But what do you care, right? it LOOKS great.

someone mentioned the Pirelli MT90ATs, that's a great dual use tire. It looks more like a motoGP rain tire than a knobby, but it won't give you nearly the heart stopping moments a true knobby will in a swerve or panic stop.

They are probably Shinko 804/805 tires. I just got a set for my CB550 scramber project.

The K-761 gives a similar look but not quite as blocky. I haven't ridden this bike yet, but I had Avon Distanzia's on an XS650 (similar tire, NLA) and they were fine on the street.

I ran the Kenda K761 on my CB750 for about...100 miles then took them right off. Not a great tire for me. Too unstable at any speed and useless for any sort of corner. I had bought it for gravel road riding but getting to/from gravel roads would have been not fun. Your experience may vary.

cheers
Andy

I just recently put on some Heidenau K60 Scouts on my Cb550 and so far have been really enjoying them. They are a lot louder then street tires but i love the look and so far have not done any thing spooky on me. I was out riding in the heavy rain a week ago and they preformed fine. I have yet to try them to aggressively in the corners.

My only complaint is that the guy at the store I got them from recommended that I went with one size smaller on the rear.  So I have a 100/90 19" on the front and a 110/90 18" on the bike. I originally wanted to run a 120/90 18" on the rear but the sales clerk said he recommended the smaller size as the 120 changed to a stiffer ply on the tire for heavier adventure bikes. In hindsight I should have gone with the 120/90.

I use the Shinko 705s on my KLR.  They look pretty tuff and handle well on road and off.

Unfortunately the Shinko 705's do not come in good sizes for a CB550, I was going to try those but the weird sizes turned me off.
