Color coding aftermarket wiring to match OEM harness?
« on: December 23, 2006, 12:38:48 PM »
I've got a number of aftermarket items going on the bike that will plug into the bike harness. None of the wiring matches the colors of the stock harness. The PO has put small, colored bands on the signal wiring to show which wire to plug into on the stock harness. Example:

Aftermarket signal: red wire has one orange and one white band crimped/glued? to the end of the wire to indicate that it plugs into the orange/white wire on the stock harness.

I've been by the electronics store and the automotive store and nobody seems to know what I'm talking about. I've been assuming that these colored bands are something you can buy rather than make. Anybody have experience with this and know where I can source these colored bands?

an eletrical wholesaler or electronics shop should be able to help you out

I've been by the Radio Shack(chain store) and Al Lashers Electronics store and neither knew what I was talking about. Since neither of these stores cater to the automotive industry I figured I try a couple auto parts stores as well but no luck there either. You're probably correct that a electronic wholesaler would have what I am looking for but I can't purchase from one. If I can't find a retail source then I'll start calling wholesalers and see if they can't point me in the right direction.

Any clue what these colored bands are called? Using the correct term rather than trying to describe what they are would probably help my search.

I generally just use heatshrink tubing for cable identification, it comes in a range of colours, and easy to use

Thanks scunny, that may be just what I'm looking at. Shrink tubing cut into small sections.  I've been looking at the color/size selections of the tubing available at the above mentioned stores and nothing they had would work for my purpose. Few colors and too large. Do you have an online source that would have, say, 10-12 color choices in a diameter that would shrink to a single wire? any help is much appreciated :)

Edit: Can't post pic at the moment. Wanted to show color markers currently on bike. Will try later

heatshrink shrinks to half it's original diameter, but if you are using it as a marker and put it on before your terminal you dont have to bother with applying heat

Have you tried Lordco?

Just tried their website but it's just a bunch of links to their suppliers. Nearest Lordco outlet is about 900 miles(wild guess) from my damp and earthquake prone home in Oakland, California. I'm currently surfing the net for shrink tube kits but have yet to find any that suit my needs. Ideally the kit would consist of short strips and many colors( I have yet to find any orange or L.blue shrink tubing).

Hobby shops that cater to the RC crowd usually carry a large selection of heatshrink tubing in all the colors of the rainbow. Just in case you haven't found what you're looking for yet.

Thanx Jinx, that's one source I wouldn't have thought of. There used to be a rather large hobby shop not far from my house, haven't been by there in years but I'll see if they're still there. Already ordered the 9th tee kit but being the OC type I want some "orange" tubing too. Possibly more colors, won't know for sure until I start sorting the wiring tomorrow.
