What is this piece called?
« on: August 23, 2017, 09:19:50 AM »
New to bikes in general, but just bought this 76 cb550k and am buying all new parts but can't seem to find what this part is called. Sprocket retainer? Its the outside disc on the left of the sprocket between the frame and the sprocket with 4 bolts. Also am wondering how this damage could have occurred

And with some pliers and a soft-blow hammer you can straighten it back out some with decent results (with some sanding and paint).

Thank you! Also I've just noticed that the PO has installed an o ring chain ansmd from all I've read on this forum that is a very bad thing. Should I get new sprockets as well as a standard chain and this sprocket plate? Will I have to change anything to make the bike suitable for a standard chain?

Yes you should replace both sprockets and chain. No changes required to accommodate these.

You should also check the front sprocket area for scarred crankcase from the wider oring chain.

Don't panic. Just check for scars first. Not every O-ring chain is the same, some hit the crankcase, others don't. Also maybe some models are more vulnerable than others. BTW, is your CB550 a K model or an F? I guess it's a K.

Yes, its a k. Seems like googling the part number only brings up sources that are unavailable. Is this a rare part?

It's NLA from Honda.

Start a thread in the Parts Wanted area, I'm sure someone has an extra...

You don't need that plate, just replace the sprocket if it is worn.

Also am wondering how this damage could have occurred

I am guessing it suffered a chain derailment - my 500 project came with the same damage to the sprocket cover, I straightened it out, but eventually found a used one on fleabay.

You'll most probably find the inside lower part of your left shock got chewed out a little too...

I think mainly it's a dust cover for the wheel bearing. It certainly doesn't help much with chain derailment on a 550 (37T sprocket)!
