Welding on a tank with a liner?
« on: October 25, 2017, 01:49:24 PM »
Previous owner had kreamed the gas tank and bondo’d over the emblem holes. Then we painted a stripe over just the bondo’d holes and cleared the rest of the bare metal tank.

I was sanding the tank down to paint it and when the bondo came out of the oval where the emblems screw in the metal bar between the screw holes came out and the spot weld that held it in place came out with it. Now I have a hole in my tank - can I have it welded, or will that destroy the liner and cause problems? Any suggestions?

It will destroy the liner most likely. Kreem is garbage anyway, might as well strip the inside and outside to see what you have to work with. Once repairs are done, if the tank doesnt leak, dont line it, but if it does, use Caswell, POR15 or Redkote to seal it up.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Just saw some 3M plastic metal that says it resist water oil and gasoline. Anyone tried something like that?

If you are spending your hard earned money on automotive paint and a pro paint job, get another tank. I'd tig braze it and remove the liner to see what's inside but I can do that on my own time.

BTW, be careful if you weld it. leave the cap off, I wash them out with alcohol and then water. Then I purge with argon and masking tape the openings.

No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Thanks guys, I don’t know if the tank needs a liner - it was in it when I got the bike. I was hoping to get around extra work, but I am going to go ahead and remove the liner and then have it welded or brazed... if it does need a liner afterward I’ve heard good things about the Caswell liners and will go with that...

I bought 2 quarts of mek and 1 Gallon of acetone last night - going to strip it today. Figured I’d mix them since straight mek is expensive.
