Wow! What a difference. I think the green/polished scheme is very cool.

Kudos to you for making something out of nothing!
I wouldn't have considered that crusty pile in the "before" picture even worth the effort to part out.

Got any pics after all the dirt was washed off?  You did a transformation for certain.  Did you clear the bare polished steel parts?  Nice job on the bike.  It is going to always generate interest wherever you ride her, and thus conversations.

Awesome!  Looks great...love the exhaust and tail.

I as well have saved one of these junkers....this one is parked for a refresh though as the tank and covers are destined to be a different color and some gaskets need replaced.  The grey tank and covers currently looks horrible with the Grey frame in the sun.

I wouldn't have considered that crusty pile in the "before" picture even worth the effort to part out.

If it weren't my dead uncles old bike.
I'd been wanting to ride the thing since I was ten.
So it unfolds;
The story of a young cowboy, growing up doing chores next to a neglected old motorcycle.
Weeks of stacking firewood every summer.  Staring at this machine while bucking hay bales in the barn.
Sometimes, he thought he could hear it whimper.
A wounded animal, locked in a stable.  Unable to run free, let alone move on its own.
Our young cowboy grew up.  Learned the ropes from the old farm hands.
Then one cold February morning, our cowboy decided it was time to bring the beast out of its cage.
It took a team of every cowhand the boy knew to break this animal.  To heal the damage caused by neglect.
The animal put up a fight.  Stubborn and forlorn.  Pitching fits and bucking throughout the process.
But with time, patience, and perseverance;
This cowboy broke the pony.

First step was to remove the vetter fairing, the rotten out saddle bag brackets, and the locked on brakes.  The seat had been taken off some time ago.  But it was a classic.  Two up seat with an adjustable sissy bar.  We’ve all seen em.

Couldn’t pass on the Goblinko Patch.

Since everything on this bike was badly corroded.  I scooped up a parts bike.
Someone elses abandoned cafe project.  With a good motor and enough replacement bits to get me through almost everything.  Still have a rolling chassis of parts left over!

Cost - $275 + gas
No Bullsh!t
That’s how you pull off a budgeted build right there.

Ended up hauling both bikes to my buddies garage for the tear down.

Of all the criticisms around the xs750 line.  The rubber frame holding the iron block was one thing I decided to fix.

With the help of longtime friend and aspiring frame builder.  We harvested the donor bike for tubing and pieced together some frame bracers.
On a cold mid march day, he welded it all up with a 120v fluxcore mig and a propane torch.
It wasn’t the best tooling for the job.
But you don’t choose the farm life.  The farm life chooses you.

I’m tempted to mount the donor bikes head tube on a plaque and show it off like a first kill.

Carbs got the royal treatment.
Triple buffed the caps and bowls.
6sigma jetting got the bike running perfect on the dyno.  13.5%A/F at the sniffer.

While the frame was off getting sandblasted and powdercoated.  Painted a number of small parts at home.  Stripped the tank of its oem paint and brush polished it.

One the paint was dry, began the reassembly process.
Pretty straight forward job since much of the bike remained stock.
Minor parts were fabricated.

Rewiring this bike turned into an actual mess.

1) deleted headlight on/off switch from right hand controls.
2) updated ignition from points to cdi
3) found out much of the diagram spec was innaccurate.

Getting the electrical on this bike involved 3 reg/rec swaps.
A replacement stator/field coil.
Additional grounds were made.
A charging system wire was rerouted.
Headlight pigtail reconfigured.
The hired help charged $400 to sort the mess for me.  Ouch.

The brakes on this bike became the other tricky part of the build.
As i came to realize there were a mismatched grab bag of worn out components in my parts bin.
3 sets of brakes, one completely different.  Two master cylinders, both ruined by corrosion.
A leaky hose and one more custom fabbed piece to shorten the length.  A necessity with the euro cafe sport bars.
Ended up with some slick looking levers off ebay.  But I’m not 100% sold on the m/c’s performance.  Yet.

Brake pad wear on parts bike was interesting to say the least.

The exhaust is the defining feature of almost every bike.
My local fabricator did not disappoint.
I handed him a bunch of trash to work with and he got it done!

This bike makes a statement goin down the highway.
Only thing that would make this exhaust better, is a fatter cam.
Maybe some pipe wrap.

Nice afterburners.

You oughta hear this thing.  Triples make a rather exotic note.
