Cb650 rear hoop
« on: November 22, 2017, 04:27:28 PM »
Hey guys has anyone done the rear hoop on a 1979 cb650? Wondering if anyone can offer advice or link me to some good info. I jacked up the rear tire 91mm and still sticks up a fair bit past the frame is that something I'll have to eat up with seat pan or?

You only need to jack the wheel up as much as the travel of the rear shocks. You can remove the springs from the shocks and reinstall and then lift the rear wheel. May give you a hair more clearance, maybe. But yes, you'll need to make the seat have a cavity or something to be able to deal with the rear tire clearance.

Possible, I noticed my shocks have 2 rubber bumps midway through and when I bounce on the seat feels like it bottoms out on the shock pretty early.

Sounds like bad shocks to me.

Possibly I'll have to check it out later today I didn't see any weeping or pitting in the strut.

So I put the bike on the ground and shock on and bounced on the rear most of the bike I'm 240lbs hopefully 200 by riding season and doesn't seem to go past the frame at any point here's a picture of the shocks.

Did you hit the bump stops during your test bounce?

I would think for such a major change to the frame you would take off the springs to guarantee full compression.

Those shocks are bad if there isn't smooth travel along it's full stroke.  It doesn't matter if you can't see oil leaking or external damage.  The functional parts are inside.  When you take off the springs you can manually check the stroke for smooth travel.
