69, 69 and another 69 - CB750 projects
« on: December 06, 2017, 10:00:18 PM »
Hello
Some might notice, but the 71 cb750 i did a couple years ago ... i eventually ended up selling to raise money for my wedding.
As part of th deal, ended up getting another 71 frame motor and some bits .. lots missing kinda deal.
As it happened, also ended up getting two more 69 frames a little while after that lol
And one early diecasg engine, and another set of 71 cases.

So here we are .. plan is to finish all three bikes .. in three colours .. candy boue green, candy gold, candy ruby red. And all with early style airboxes and shark fin side covers.

A severely overly optimistic project lol

As of now; ( since i started this thread late )
The 71 motor .. i took apart, was siezed .. rusted, had mayo in place of oil lol ..
Cleaned, painted cases, got a cycleX under cut transmission, check the bearing tolerances, and buttoned up the bottom end.
Also got the rebuilt oil pump from cycke X, which works great just as it did in my last 71.
Have yet to install the oil pump, but th cases are back together.
Waiting on the oil pump gasket and the sprocket seal.
Got all the engine bolts plated as well whike i was at it.
I am not trying to be super accurate with these builds, but wherever  if i can .. i will.

Making lists these days and catalouging what i have for parts, and soon will post a wanted thread as well as i need LoTS of parts.

I guess the most exciting of all the parts i acquired is the set of 4 cable carbs that i got, pretty clean set as well.
I also picked up a couple other early carb sets as well .. for which btw i need 2 throttle springs and the spring base plates, if any one has spare ones please PM

I probably wont put on the set of 4 cabke carbs though .. but havnt decided for sure yet

you have alot of searching to do!I have pieced together most of a ko,starting with just a bottom end,not easy as kos are regarded as sandcasts by most selling parts, making things very expensive,I got lucky on alot of things or I would not have done it,best of luck!

I sure do.
I have a decent pile of parts going .. collected some gauges, wheels, carbs, coils, etc .. i think most of whats left i would have probably wanted replacement ones anyways .. with some exceptions ...
and since we are on the subject .. i need some center stands, stand hardware and one early swing arm .. i’d be ok with even a k1 arm.
I have a k2 swingarm that i could offer as a trade or just sell if i find an early one, PM me if anyone has got one

I got at least one centerstand, not sure of year.
Are all the frames good, not cut..and you checked for rot on left rear motormount and side stand area ?
I want to build a hotrod 69, not worried if frame is cut.
 Have 10,××× cases and 16,××× and 20,×××.

If its a correct centerstand .. and not bent i can take it for sure.
For now at least i am pretty sure i am keeping the three frames and hopefully will finish what i started.
There isnt rot, but one of the frames was cut at some point in its life for the ease of head removal, but that was then welded back and repaired.
Once painted it would be good as new

Acquired a 750 engine .. 1972 ..
to get the internals for my 71 engine cases.
Cylinders had pistons seized, but i went through the bottom and undid the rid big ends, to push the barrels out from the bottom.
Crank looks in good shape, though i haven’t measured anything.
Surprisingly in all the rust, i saw one shiny brand new piston in there ... that is a mystery still to be solved. May be the PO blew a piston .. will find out once it gets out.
Bottom seems opened once before and chains replaced, primary chain slack measured 68.1 ... which is good .. thats almost zero stretch.
Now its time to tidy everything up .. and neatly store and catalogue.

I have a few questions regarding the forks ... didnt want to start a new thread.
I bought new chrome fork cap bolts, and they arent fitting in the early fork tubes .. bad threads perhaps ...
but that got me thinking .. since i have quite a few early bottoms .. can i use the guts from a k3 fork .. with the different style damping rods and tubes in the earlier tubes ? I could try but i figures someone must have tried it already

I dont think the early,ie ko forks have the bolt on the bottom of the lowers between axle clamps to hold the later innards, and the ko/k1 forks have a diff damping system,so my thought is no.bill

They do have the bolt in the bottom, so thats why i thought i could just bolt up the newer dampers as well .. i havent checked or measured anything yet though

Quick answer  No .
You would have to machinevtgd tubes to take a lower bushing, the mount a slider bushing on the fork tubes.
Early legs are bigger to accommodate the bushings, on the 73 and later, the fork wears against  the lower leg bore.
