pull apart some old hard drives and use the magnets, ive used em like this for ages, lets see a magnet plug gather this much debris after a rebore.

then at each subsequent oil change you see the ferrous debris diminish, you insert the magnet end away from the motor in the housing.

I always like to repurpose things. I use the plugs out of backup batterys for quick hook ups to charge or jump my bikes and mower.
Ill be doing this one. Thanks!

That reminds me about changing oil at 50 km after a rebore, new rings/ pistons install. Another change 500 km later. The oil filter should stop all kind of debris, magnetic or not.

My last new piston install got oil changes even more frequent.

yeah pewe the magnets let you monitor the break in,sure the filters stop debris but a little extra free insurance?plus you wont  clog a filter and have it activate the bypass!its too easy and free.

just out of interest that rebore is a few years old now and the motor hauls arse!its a first oversize 550,i don't spare it,my only thing is let em warm up a good 15 minutes as you ride before you cane em hard,i broke third gear in it a while back so swapped in my spare motor which is only a stripped and cleaned out but new internal chains engine, that hauls arse also, you ever seen this pewe?i also wore out the selector drum wheel?kinda mushroomed the face and flared it with a groove.

oops, was a long way from home with no third, the thing with magnet plugs is they only get what oil happens to be drifting past them, sure they'll catch the extra, filter housings have all the oil more or less pumping past them.

Fully agree about magnets to catch metal to see the grind-in. Pieces from gearbox hopefully never to be seen. That need a magnet in oil pan.
Too hard shiftdowns might cause bad things, gearbox as chains.

Dave, I wonder why I never had the 'typical' CB500 damages, like the broken clutch lifter push rod and the infamous 'third'. If I consult p.28 of the parts list for my model, http://www.honda4fun.com/pdf_parts_list/pdf_spac500/CB500-76/CB500-76_2.pdf I find, besides the push rod, two other parts, #6 and #13, that were not in the transmission of older models CB500. Could that explain it?

that third and its mate are the only two gears shared in the 500 and 550 transmissions, very subtle changes in the dogs and hub bushings,in both these photos the 550 part is on the left and the 500 one on the right.

Dave - is there any typical wear or warning signs on the 500's 3rd gear to watch out for - just about to put my gearbox back in the cases and don't want to pull them apart again !

if the dogs look rounded or their mating slots, also if the gear is wobbly on its shaft that can help it jump out of gear, mine was jumping out over a year and got worse and worse till nothing.

I also use HDD magnets on my filters, as well as a traditional magnetic plug with magnet glued on the end. Neat idea that different plug design.
