Cb550 starter relay wiring
« on: January 21, 2018, 07:36:05 AM »
I'm in the process of restoring my 550F and I am confused about the wiring on the starter relay behind the LH side cover.
The wires for the starter solenoid are off but I'm not sure which ones go onto which of the two terminals. The terminals on the relay do not seem to me identified with a + or -.
Can anyone help? Pictures would be really useful too!
Thanks

Alex

The starter solenoid is nothing more than an electric switch for the starter.  There are two large posts.  One side attaches to the battery the other to the starter.  When the solenoid is actuated it completes the +12VDC circuit to the starter.

it are only the positive voltage vho goes through the big kontaktors...så both are positive plus.

..the netative energy goes through the frame and frame viring..so are alvays konnekted

..thats vhy, its so importment to have a good frame konnektion..its the half of the power"s vay..

Hi Alex,
Good luck on your CB550F, and welcome to the forum!
The answer is, when you mount your solenoid so the your small wires are correctly connected together, the cable from the battery will mount on the lug side closest to that and the starter cable will mount on the other conveniently located screw lug. It matters not, which one goes where, as was stated, they are both for +12v. connection, and the two small wires, when actuated, will make the contact in the solenoid between the two lugs.

Thank you very much for the responses. I slept on it and sort of arrived at the same conclusion but being electrically challenged I am very glad to get clarification. Just a final clarification... I get that the power comes from the battery to one terminal and out to the starter from the other.. does it matter at all which terminal the remaining wires go to?
Thanks!

The bike is coming on nicely and should be on the road by spring. I hope to take it on the Exmoor Dash (or whatever its called)..

Ah, yes it does. The ring terminal in your picture, will go to the battery side of the solenoid. The other two wires with the bullet connectors are color coded, and should be keyed to the bullet connectors. If not, then hook the up as per each color coded set.
