CB550K tank lock help
« on: February 20, 2018, 09:11:53 AM »
Hi.... I’ve read a load of the old topics on this issue but haven’t been able to come up with a solution.... Question is, I’m after a replacement lock mechanism for one that’s missing on a tank I’ve just bought and I can’t find one for sale anywhere. Has anyone got any suggestions please or a spare one that I could buy from you??

Not sure if you’re willing to completely remove the key lock in favor of a push button but I made this with some thinking help from the forum.

I have a '71 CB500 with a lock mechanism that I want to replace with a non-locking aftermarket one.  The secret to these "locking" gas caps is that they don't actually lock.  You can open them with any screwdriver, small key, etc.  The aftermarket ones are $35-55 though and I need to curb my spending on this project, but I would be willing to sell my locking mechanism if it got me closer to being able to pay for the aftermarket one.  Let me know.  It's rust free and in excellent condition.

Thanks for that ... Yeah, I open mine with anything I have to hand. I’m happy with anything that keeps it shut and looks pleasing to the eye. I’m in the U.K. and there is nothing here or elsewhere worldwide on eBay that I can find. Who does aftermarket ones? Failing that, I might take you up on your offer

Did you check with member Bill Benson? He has a big stash and may have a used one.

Hey Durango - if he has the stock '78 tank, his tank has a trap door with a lock that covers his gas cap.  Not the same type of lock at all.

I have one but is for sale compete with the "flappy door" for $40.

Post to UK is expensive and may be the cost of the part.

We have small flat rate boxes here in the US, but don't think that would cover it to the UK.. My friend Pat probably has the lock mechanism and the door, but postage would be the factor.

Dave... think I’ve found something on eBay that looks like your mod... Really like the look of your job ... does it look like the one you used... 25mm diameter?
Found one in the US for $1.85 but they don’t ship.... This one is £15 ($21)

Yup, that looks like it. I obviously ordered through their own website though, not eBay. It’s a good little mod though. I recommend it.

I cut out the little piece of sheet metal under the flap for ease of install. Check out the links I gave you, there’s pictures and such showing what I did.

I like Dave's mod, that what I would do.

Hey chaps.... as ‘luck’ would have it, the day after I got your advice, a lock advertised as fitting the 550k (77-78 he said) came up on eBay,so I bought it. Thing is, it doesn’t seem to fit and looks nothing like the one one my other tank. Before I get back to the seller (and he proves me wrong), I’m wondering if for some reason, the lock and flap design changed for some reason and it would fit a different flap.
Wondering if anyone can help please?
Photos one to three are of the new lock and the last one is off my other tank.
