Tips for reaming a swingarm bronze bushing please
« on: April 14, 2018, 11:03:41 PM »
My swingarm troubles continue  :'(

I installed the bronze bushings today.  Used a threaded rod after freezing the bushings and putting the SA in the oven for a while.  Went in relatively easily.  However my NOS swingarm collar goes in fine into one of the bushings, but not on the other side.  I guess the bushing must have deformed a tad on that side when being put in.

Its very close to fitting, so only needs a tiny bit of material removing.  Can someone guide me on how to ream out the bushings properly?

you need a rival..but it need to be metric...a machine shop can run it through..but they need  both parts to get a nice fit..its normal that it get a bit deformed by montage..so the last machining is importment for long living bushings...

Wait, so the collar is the hollow shaft that slides in the bushings, right? And the bushings are installed in the swing arm? How tight is it? Does it slide in at all?

You could flapper and “ream” it that way. They do make hand reamers but you’ll have to find the right metric size.

Flapper: the people are super annoying but it’s the first video I found.

You probably raised a burr while installing bushings, pull out the tube and try to insert on the side it's hanging up.
It is probably a small amount, so go carefully.
If you tap it in a bit, then back it out , you may see a shiny spot, or narrow band, where it's hanging up.  Then scrape or work that down.

Yeah the pivot collar is the shaft in the middle and the bushings are the bronze top type that are now in the swing arm ends.  The collar slides in one of the bushings ok but wont go in the other one.  It is very close to fitting so that flapper might just do the trick.  I'll give it a go and report back!

Yeah thats exactly what happened - I tried to tap it in with a rubber mallet and it caught up in one particular spot about half way in the bushing and left a shiny band.

So try to wiggle it around and knock it back out  then inspect with strong light.
The sort of shiny spot is the hanging up part.. you have to work it down.
Knife, scraper, dremel tool, expanding reamer.. what ever you got
Often it's only a small bump or narrow band at the entry point from installing it.

A few minutes with some 400 grit sand paper and she's in!

There's a bit of the collar sticking out the end too, measures about 0.3mm with my crappy calipers.  Bit more than I was hoping but hopefully it'll be ok.

You'd be surprised. Might tighten up too much still when installed-hopefully not. Had to file the ends down a bit on mine. Bob

Use a 3-stone Brake Hone, and insert the collar from the other side to prevent the hone from reaching past the bushing, trapping it inside the arm. Clean the stones with kerosene. Each time they have 'loaded up' with bronze, you will have removed about 0.0001" from the ID of the bushing. ;)
