It happened for real : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterfly_Bomb

"On the island of Malta in 1981 Paul Gauci, a 41-year-old Maltese man, died after welding a butterfly bomb to a metal pipe and using it as a mallet, thinking it was a harmless can"

My friends dad did cleanup around Dukla after the war, he had some nice stories.  Like old guy using antitank mine as a bed warmer - he would place it on the stove, warm it up and put it in his bed to keep himself warm through the night.   He did not like it when the pyrotechnic took it away.  ;D

There was a very good series made by Thames TV circa 1979 called "Danger UXB". It scared the s**t out of me at the time because I thought myself exceptionally gifted at constructing IEDs, but in reality had not considered how attached to my hands and arms I really was.

Here is the episode where they have to tackle the Butterfly bombs or more correctly "Sprengbombe Dickwandig 2 kg"

Yeah, as a teenager I was drawn to anything that goes kabooom.  After catching a bottle fragment with the back of my head - 3 stitches :) - I started using paper containers.  Luckily enough, since one of those went off in my left hand - without inflicting any lasting damage.
