Are there any manufactures that make a two part similar to a CBR cluster, that being a analog tach and digital speed/trip/inicator?  I like the motogadget classic but I wish the speedo display was larger.

I didn't know digital readouts were options on these bikes?  How are you all able to make the digital gauges work with previously mechanical ones?  Well, I guess I understand the speedo solution (just like a bicycle computer, but the tach? 
I need help moving my project bike from Wisconsin to Seattle, WA.  Willing to pay well.  Contact if interested.

The digital indicators work by attaching a rotational sensor on a wheel or sprocket. Then you go through a calibration set-up by entering your tire diameter to determine the distance traveled in one rotation. With an internal time base you can determine your speed fairly accurately.

Tachometers use a sense wire attached to one of your coil feed wires. A sensitive amplifier then will shape the pulse signal and this is used to determine the RPM's by division.

If it can be used, I've thought of making a "poor mans" system using my bike computer and a cheap tach from Summit Racing.  I've got a bike computer currently mouted with the stock tach, but this one is much smaller and lighter.

I thought there was some issue with getting the correct RPM reading from our "wasted spark" system on an electronic tach?  Since the coils fire every revolution, it would cause you to read double the engine speed.  Is that right?

The beauty of the Vapor is that you can adjust that to work.

Will a $30 bicycle speedo not work?  I had one but the wire wasn't long enough to reach to the axle hub.

Yes, actually a $9.99 bike speedo will work.  It seems pretty accurate.  I had plenty of wire to wrap around the brake line down to the wheel.

Hmm, just an update on my Vapor.  I've had it on my Suzi for about 3 months.  Haven't driven it much since I got the Honda running good.  Anyway, I fired it up for a ride the other day and the odometer and everythijng else reset.  It does that every time I turn the key on.  Not good, I was planning on selling next month and start my CB900F or CB1100F quest.  >:(

Sounds like your digital has either an internal back-up battery that is not at the proper voltage or even not present at all. Or it has an optional ciruit on the wiring diagram that has one wire that is connected directly to your battery and a second wire attached to your ignition switch... Check this out, it is a typical design and might provide some information to help you with your reset problem... Or if I may say, it just is a poorly designed digital speedo.

chances are the internal battery went dead - the instructions say to wire up to a constant 12v
i have just about finished installing mine and i realized i tapped into the original gauge light wires (not a constant 12v) - so it looks like i'll get to rewire that  :(

I'm working on a digital speedo trip and odo as a sideline when I can get away with it at work, using a picaxe controller I have the code worked out for trip and odo.  I haven't worked out the analogue bit between the proximity switch and the controller, I want to keep an analogue tacho - ideally an old smiths or something with a stepper or servo motor behind the face driving the needle. If it works out I will post it on here.

Just an update: tried splicing the grounds differently (after looking at the wiring schematic) - still didn't work
so i bought some 8-pin sockets at Radio Hack and cut up the TrailTech harness.

hooked up everything normally (as in - no spliced grounds other than factory) and it works great!

My tach was bouncing around a bit so i called trailtech and they attributed it to a 'dirty signal' and offered a couple suggestions:

!.) wrap the wire around the spark plug wire only 4 or 5 times
          - same result
2.) connect the + lead to the + input on the coil
          - same result

so i still have a bouncing tach


i just finished hooking up the speedo sensor but havn't had time to test it



drilled a hole in the rotor base for the magnet and hacked up the dust shield (?) around the rotor to hold the sensor
i think i'm going to ditch the dust-shield and make a bracket

the installation instructions only have you calculate the circumfrence of the tire for the input of the compute (you say your Circumfrence is __ and it figures out the rest).
wouldn't it depend on where you install the sensor in relation to axle or center of the wheel?

perhaps i'm looking too far into this...

oh, and in the process i discovered the brake line was seized on the caliper (and the PO had already broken the bleeder) - so i had to swap the ends of the line. I will see if my local place will make me a new one.


also recieved my EBay tach-plug  ;D

My tach bounces all over the place too.  I'm inclined to think it's a guess-timate tach anyway.  The GS redlines around 12 and I've seen the tach at anywhere from 8k to 16k when I know I'm around 12k.  I just use the audible tach.  I generally shift right before the valves float when I'm in my angry mode.  99.9% of the time I'm just tooling around town so it doesn't matter.

BTW, I like the way yours has indicator lights.  I bought mine when they first came out and were only 99.  They didn't have your version.  Looks good!

hey there, sorry for abandoning the thread, I've been really busy.  The sensor cable I have is a little different than the one pictured, I also ordered a set of suppression core plug wires for two reasons my plug wires are about shot and to reduce some of the interference
that may be the cause of the tach bounce, I think you had that Idea paxtonpony.  hopefully the weekend weather will allow for some drive way time getting down to the shop these days is going to be tough.

i've been talking to them everyday this week
now they are sending me a new tach lead with resistors built in that i attach directly to the coil
we shall see how that goes

they were a bit of a pain to install though - the quickest and easiest way would be to cut up the harness that comes with it and get an 8-pin connector from radio hack

I've been put onto these guys in my never ending search for a retro style set-up, these still look too modern but the prices are good and there is a wide selection, you'll have to go easy on the guy as his English isn't too good - damn site better than my German though!  He lists on Ebay UK as well and a little cheaper:

in my Gauge search i stumbled across the KOSO gauges as well - unfortunately the US selection was a bit limited.
they looked like good gauges though.

Yeah thats a nice layout, colouring is still a bit futuristic for me.  If he would do something a little simpler - a plain black or white tacho with a small analogue or LCD speedo next to it I'd go for it.
