Suspension Upgrade - Unparallelled Service!
« on: May 06, 2019, 01:05:18 PM »
I wanted to title this post “Shocking Service Par Excellence!”, b it I thought people might read the headline and not the detail, thus giving completely the wrong message.

Anyway, having just completed a 4,500 trip from Zimbabwe through Botswana, S Africa, Mozambique and back home, I decided that before embarking on the second stage of my journey to Belfast, N Ireland, that my suspension needed upgrading. With the combination of age, heavy loading and poor roads I experienced bottoming out and a rocking horse effect whilst riding.

So after a review of posts on the forum here, I concluded I had 3 options: Hagon, Progressive or IKON. I sent an email to all three saying what the issue was and asking for their advice.

Maybe 4 hours later I had a very helpful response from Nils Menten at IKON with very helpful comments and suggestions. He had also sent his comments to the IKON factory in Australia for their input.

Not sure how – it must have been middle of the night in Oz – but an hour or so later a response had arrived from Oz, agreeing with the solution with a small refinement. Because I had said I was in a rush to get back on the road, it was agreed that I should pay on the US website and the guys would ship my custom shocks and fork springs directly to me in Zim.

So my initial query was on Thurs afternoon; this evening - Mon - I received notification that my shocks had been despatched!

Nils also added 500ml of fork oil, gratis, to go along with the 10% discount everyone on this forum can get.

No that’s what I call a shocking (-ly good) service  :D In contrast, I’ve had no response to my other 2 messages! :(

Look forward to receiving the bits and experiencing the difference on my ride.

Thank you Nils!

That's good to hear. Please let us know what you think of the new suspension.  Are the Ikon bits available in the US? I have to put some new shocks on my 72 and would like to find something that actually makes a difference.

You should do a ride report of your 4500 mile trip complete with photos - I would be interested to see how your 750 faired on the roads. Are you riding to N.Ireland from Zim? If so ride report please!!

good luck!

Sounds like an epic trip and I would also love to see a ride report with pictures. Reminds me of "The long way Down" route except in reverse.

+1 on Nils and IKON shocks, great service! I do know that Dave Quinn is not selling Hagon anymore and I don't know if there is a US distributor.

Good luck on the rest of your journey.

I am doing a blog.

I started, but then couldn’t edit/update on my iPad because google don’t support iPads!

I’ve now started again on a different platform and you can follow what I’ve done so far at belfast2belfastbybike.com

It’s not got too much there yet, but I’ll be updating it while waiting on my shocks to come, so, as they say, “Watch this (or rather that) space”

I'll be following closely!
Again, good luck on the rest of the trip!!

The IKON's are great, you will be happy you bought them. Looks like Dime City is selling Hagon's but none in stock right now. I have IKON on my newest 550 build and Hagon on another 550 and a 750.

Stopping by the IOM for the TT races? You would be a big hit there if you can get there in time. Don't know if that is possible. I'll sign up for updates as well.

Good luck! Anyone doing a journey like this on a an antique bike needs to be commended.

Commended, or committed?  ;D

Not sure I’ll make it for May, but David Silver is holding a fling (http://www.davidsilverhondacollection.co.uk/whats-on/honda-sohc-4-cylinder-anniversary-open-day) in Sep to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the start of the Honda SOHC 4-cylinder models in 1969, with a special event to be held at our Honda museum on Saturday 28th September 2019.

I’d like to make that, cos there’s a prize for the furthest travelled Honda SOHC Four (ridden to the event!) and I reckon I might just get that!

As I said, I've started a blog covering my trip.

I've also started a post on the Traveller's Rest forum http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,177571.0.html where I'll post links for updates.

Shocks and springs arrived yesterday, so will befitting today (or tomorrow).

I off on my trip – nearly a week in – and I’ve traversed Mozambique and am about to leave Malawi for Tanzania. All going well, but I have a problem.

I replaced my original shocks with IKON 7610 - Custom and fork springs with IKON 500-083 progressive springs. Fitting the springs was straightforward, but I struggled a little to get the shocks on. I set shocks as advised (damping 2 and preload in middle)  I took the bike for a quick spin and everything seemed in order.

I did note though that it was much easier to put the bike up on the centre stand and that the rear wheel was much closer to the ground.

First mile out of home with bike loaded and I was shocked by a serious front end wobble at about 50kph. I nearly turned back, but decided to try it a bit further and see. Once past 60kph everything was fine. The bike handles much better at speed and deals with bumps, dips and ripples much better than before. So all-in-all a great improvement, but .....

Since that first wobble I have covered some 1500km, discussed the issue with Nils and tried increasing preload (no change or slightly worse, so I put it back to 2), increasing front tyre pressure (made it worse so I reduced it again) and redistributing load - limited possibilities – forward and down (no change noticeable). Everything else is OK - bearings are new (6,000km) All Balls, tyres are New (3,000km) and all nuts and bolts tight.

This is clearly not stopping me, but it is a worry and is troublesome at city speeds; as soon as I take one hand off the handlebars the front starts flapping about like a barn door on a windy night.

So today I’m going to reduce tyre pressure a little more and reduce preload to 1, but if anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I’d love to hear them to try to sort this out.

My CB750 K6 could be unstable at front at take offs with luggage. Steering damper helps.

Easiest to just order a complete working kit from Yamiya.
http://www.yamiya750.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=246_145&products_id=231

I almost forgot. Tank bag helps too. Move weight forward compensating the heavy rear lifting the front.

Could be your spring is too stiff or too much preload. I just went through this on my K2 with new rear shocks (Hyperpro) and when I changed out the spring to a softer one my front end vibration (at 60mph) went away. Another thought is because you have changed your rear suspension your front may now be lacking. Change to fresh 10w fork oil and see of that helps. I have ridden fully loaded  2-up and never had a front end wobble on my K4 so I dont think a steering stabilizer is strictly necessary if everything else is fine. Of course i may have just been compensating!

See pic below for my overloaded bike and this was used 2-up for 1500 miles.

good luck!

Thanks guys for the responses.

I’ve been on the road a month now and had two spills - nothing to do with the steering though; first was aon deep sand, and the second was on a downhill stretch of a road with potholes that could swallow a wheelbarrow all over the road. No major damge, but I think a set of engine protection bars might have been a good idea; can’t keep replacing the points cover.

Anyway, I’ve revived this thread because nothing I have done has improved the wobble that started when I replaced my original fork springs and shocks with IKON ones. Previously the bike was steady as a rock, and this wobble started the first day after the change. This is not just a bit of a tremor, it’s a full blown earthquake; but only at about 50-60kph.

I have tried adjusting the springs through all 3 settings - no effect. I haven’t changed the damping.

I have moved some of weight forward to no effect, though the wobble is still there even when unloaded. The full load at the back is less than carrying a passenger - prob about 35-40kg all told with some of it in side bags. (See pic)

I have tightened the steering head bearings - how tight is too tight?

I have adjusted the tyre pressures - the front I think is a bit low as when warm the other day it was 1.8 bar. I noticed that the tyres (Metzeler Perfect ME11 and ME77 in standard sizes), front and back seem to be wearing a little less in the middle that the edges. Does this indicate too low pressure?

I am about to have a good look at the front end after the second tumble, even though I’ve ridden some 600km since then; it just doesn’t feel right. The bike needs an oil change etc  and this is the first suitable place (Kampala, Uganda) I’ve reached since.

Any thoughts welcome, remembering I’m 5,000+km from home and spares/options to replace things are just about non-existent.

FOrgot to mention that I also changed the fork oil. I was using stuff supplied gratis by IKON and went back to ATF. There was about 10ml more in one of the forks, but now I’ve got same amount in both and no difference.

Not really an answer, rather food for thought. When I was young, poor, brave and foolish I rode about on a 750 with shot swingarm
bushings, notchy steering bearings, saggy suspension and with a selection of questionable tyres, in other words all the things you're not
supposed to do. Never had a steering wobble on it, one up or two up, even though I drove like a nutter.

So all I can suggest is to slacken off those steering bearings good and proper and take it for a test drive. And put more air in the tyres.
At least it's relatively quick  and easy to do so you'll know if you're going in the right direction.

Lovely photo of the kids and your bike; don't you just love Africa. You do though have bigger nuts than me for actually driving through the
place on a bike.

Different Ikons.
My K6 got Ikons with progressive springs.
My K2 got not progressive, look same as your bikes.
2, 2 settings for my K6

My K2 is softer with same settings. I plan to set damping to 3. Visible under rubber, a black wheel with numbers.

You might need set spring height to max (3).

Otherwise steering damper to keep control on the wobbling fork.
Tires:
2.1Bar front,
2.4 Bar rear
