How has your life changed?
« on: March 20, 2020, 03:38:51 PM »
These are some trying times to say the least.  Thought it might be interesting on how your life has changed Since March 1st, when a lot of us hadnt even heard about the Corona Virus  [from beer?]

I'll start:

My work office has closed, we are a Commercial Real Estate Company [development and management], we are working remotely from home.  I'm in between projects so really dont have much going on except a couple of make readys.
My wife's office is closed too, she is working remotely at home.  Luckily my office is downstairs and she is up!

All restaurants, bars, gyms, mall and many other businesses are closed.  There can be no gatherings more than 10 people.  Restaurants can to take-out, but we've been cooking anyways.

Went to the grocery store a week ago, it was quite busy, a lot of empty shelves, but I got everything I needed.  Grocery store I go to [Texas based HEB] has reduced hours, only open 8-8 now.
I went this morning around 8:30am.  Woke up early and thought I would check it out.  The parking lot was full, and there were approx 35 people waiting in line just to get in the store! [they are limiting the amount of people inside, something I didnt know before going].
I said screw it, wasnt anything I really needed and just went home.
Did fuel up the Tacoma - $1.67 a gallon!

Would have loved to ride one of the bikes, but we've had off and on rain all day, all in all, not a great day!

How has this health crisis changed your life?

Stay safe....

My wife is an accountant and the public library she works at is closed and she's working from home to do the accounting for a dentist office she works for as well. I'm still working but my employer had a meeting with all of us to go over changes in our attendance policy should any of us get sick. So far the county I live in doesn't have any covid-19 cases but I imagine it's just a matter of time because some surrounding counties already have a few. All restaurants and bars are closed except for carry out. We did have plans for our savings this spring as in re-modeling in our house but all that has been put on hold until everything calms down. For the most part not much has changed for me personally ....... yet.

Steve... much the same here. I’m retired and live on our 100 acre farm. We are 60 miles NE of Toronto, just north of Mosport race track (no coincidence). Not much going on at the farm right now, we raise Scottish Hyland cattle with my 200 acre neighbour. Small herd, under 30 head. They are very hardy and take care of themselves!

I’m used to amusing myself and can spend days in my shop. Yesterday our standby generator got fresh gas, a good cleaning, oil change and carb clean. The day before I prepped my KLR650 for a ride today (first of the season), but it poured most of the day (bike is clean and our road is a mud bath!)

My wife is more challenged. Her garden clubs are cancelled. No Yoga or Exercise classes (she is in great shape!). A class she teaches: cancelled. The Library 1 mile away is Closed...... to early for her to be out in the garden, so she’s a bit frustrated. I’m going to cut up some scrap lumber this weekend and get her Building bird houses, cheese boards and boot removers. All good gifts and she’s quite good at it.

Stores are working the Same as for you, but we shop at a smaller place in a more rural town. My wife calls ahead and they have the stuff boxed up and waiting when I pick up. Our freezers are too full anyways, good chanc to clean them out.

Other than missing some regular social events, all good. Tomorrow was an annual Sugar Bush party at a neighbour’s. They make thousands of gallons of Maple Syrup commercially, and host a great barn party. Always next year.....

Stay well, John D.

In seattle so everything is closed and there's strong social pressure to stay home. Everyone thinks that they'll lock us down soon but there's nothing official about that yet. If they do do it, it would probably be sunday afternoon (that's when they announced the bars closing).

I'm working from home this week and it's been really sunny. So I think I'm going for a big ride tomorrow.

BTW, don't get tricked by people on facebook etc, about what a shelter in place order means. The penalties if enforced are $1,000 fine or 6 months in jail (this is the penalty in SF). However if you have a good reason to be outside and aren't congregating then you wouldn't be charged. You can still go to the park and go jogging, go to the store etc. So basically, it's just more store closing, and more social pressure to stay home. It's not much different than what's happening here already.

Pretty much the same in Michigan Steve. Restaurants and bars etc. have been closed for around a week or so as well as junk stores which are some of my favorite haunts. Gas is around $1.80 but expect it to go down more. I have "self quarantined" and "social distanced" with my chainsaws and am clearing brush and dead trees etc. and making big fires on my 3 acre lot where my shop is.Woods really got overgrown.  Love the smell of two-stroke in the morning -smells like victory !!  ;D ;D
My wife had a spring getaway planned to Miami and Key West on the 28th with a group that got canceled and has a trip planned for Branson in May that sounds like it may be in limbo. The mother of my son is stranded down in Honduras where she was on a bird watching adventure and is hoping to get out of that country on the 30th. Not a good time for traveling that's for sure.

Ekpent, almost stopped by your shop today after work, as I saw you were there, but then thought better of it, as I certainly have been less quarantined than some others.   Still gotta go to work, which is good, I guess, as I still gotta pay the bills.  Pretty bored sitting around by myself, even though I spend most of my free time alone anyway.  If it was a little warmer, I'd be out riding.

I am of the mind that this is mostly a big media bull#$%* fest.
If it works good, it looks good...

Sean, I would take a look at the measures taken recently in states with non-essential businesses closed. A governor won’t voluntarily cripple his state’s retail economy because the 5pm news scared him. This is really real.

Pa. is the same. No forced curfew yet. I don't' know how Id react to that. Im a constitutionalist and someone is gonna try to arrest me for being out? I thought we beat hitler.......Anyway, my roofing shingles were delivered yesterday and my girlfriend's son-in-law and grandkids will be doing my roof. He's unemployed now, along with his wife. Also girlfriend's other single daughter with three kids and a son and wife , all barred from working. Im recouping from shoulder surgery so im limited in helping. was gonna do all this in late spring when i could help , but, here we are. They're the ones paying a price.
People fighting in the stores over TP.....ridiculous......One daughter-in-law was shopping yesterday , left her grocery cart to go get some cinnamon rolls for a second, came back, someone had taken her meat selections out of her cart.
Just goes to show just how it can be.........and it's not even a real, crisis....

Here in NC about the same. A lot of empty shelves at grocery stores. Restaurant's are closed except for drive thru. Most churches have cancelled services including our church. The lowest I've seen gas is $1.86. I work at a car dealership in the parts dept. We are open but business is very slow. My wife works at telecommunications company. They are still operating but many of the employees are trying to work from home. Like everyone who has a 401k its taking a beating and being retirement age its a little scary but hoping it will jump back when all this is over. I've told my 91 year old mom who still drives and is very independent that I would bring her what she needs and to stay put and not venture out. I know its not easy and even down right hard at times but when we're out and about be patient with people and if you can do something to help someone do it, if its nothing more than just a kind word ;)

I work at a essential business, so still working everyday, here in Georgia.
wife works at a bank, and they have been deemed essential., Daughter works at a nuclear plant, they have cases, but she's fine. Son has been laid off, as his place of employment has closed. He's in Florida.

Seems our local town hasn't taken it very seriously, places still open. Store shelves are empty though.

Can't figure the run on toilet paper. Filled my Taco yesterday, $1.73.

If you notice though, the gas prices for regular is lower. Premium was still $2.89.

And the ethenol free gas I buy was $2.99, had to fill my cans for the mowers and bikes.
If it ain't raining, I'm riding.....~~{iii}?~~prost

The scenario is pretty much the same here in Indiana. Churches, gyms, schools, universities, etc. closed. Restaurants are pick-up or delivery only (we generally do not eat out, so not much different for us). I haven't been to the store for a week, but the shelves were empty when I was there, I picked up some food items, as TP and sanitizers are gone. My office is still working, we have 6 employees, all in separate offices. We did discuss setting up work from home, if needed. It would be tough for us due to the interaction we have during the day, but can be done, if needed. My wife is the cafeteria manager at one of the local schools, so she is working 4 hours a day distributing breakfast and lunch meals to students who can get to the school to pick them up. The first days distribution was disappointing, but it has steadily increased each day.

There are several local restaurants and community groups who are also passing out lunches to kids who can pick them up. So, many opportunities for kids who need meals to get them.

I have a friend who has Covid-19 symptoms, but when he called the hospital to see if he can get tested, he was refused. They said there are no tests in NE Indiana available. He did find out later, that they are only testing elderly persons and persons who need hospitalization.

For the most part, my wife and I are maintaining a "normal" life. We'll see what the next few days/weeks bring. As soon as the weather warms up, I'm doing my social distancing on the open roads.

Stay healthy out there.

I'm semi-retired in central Ohio, work several days a week at the local Walmart Auto Center.  Two weeks ago, we were covered up with folks spending income tax refunds on new tires.  This week, maybe 15 cars in a days time.  They shut us down on Thursday of this week.  Only doing warranty work, and dot.com tire installs now.  The store is as empty as I've ever seen it, but with daily deliveries I haven't had any problems getting anything I need.

Here in Mexico City, life goes on. Both the president and the governor have been criticized heavily for not taking this seriously. The governor was promoting going out and supporting businesses which is, of course, a noble idea -- just a very bad one right now. There were around 100 cases here as of yesterday, in a metropolitan area of 20+ million, so it's not viewed as being widespread. Testing is available for about 3000 pesos, which is now about $120US. The peso has hit a historic low at 25 to the dollar (it's normally about 18.5), and I don't quite understand it since it's the US economy that has been tanking.

My wife and I have worked from home. Our workplaces -- a university and a reinsurance corp -- both mandated work from home, but it is not an order coming from the gov't. We have been going for walks every day, and everything is still open: bars, cafes, restaurants. They have customers, maybe fewer, but there are plenty of people not doing much to isolate themselves, just some people wearing masks. That being said, there are many more delivery service bikes parked in front of restaurants (Uber Eats, Rappi). We've been staying at home and working which is easy for both of us.

I haven't been to the grocery store in two days, but two days ago it was as normal, no crazy lines, no run on TP, no run on food. Last week I Went to the outdoor market for fresh fish and veggies, but won't be going back until this blows over.

Wife and I are retired so staying at home a lot.  She has lung issues so I am just hoping nothing happens to her.  Will go out early tomorrow to go shopping.  Daughter works at a hospital in Oncology, but she has Lupus so she worked from home for only 2 days and was told to stop scheduling people for treatment.  They are saving beds for expected rush of people.  Gas is around $1.65 in the Detroit area.  Also area gun stores are having a run on business.  Ammo is in short supply in popular calibers.

Just got told to stay home tomorrow, all of the UAW mechanics and technicians where I work have been laid off, and the labs closed down.  The lab engineering staff and management (includes me) have been ordered to work from home.  We have a meeting tomorrow morning to go over plans.  Luckily I am in the middle of a data collection project, so I have everything I need to continue working...  Plus some of those old reports finally need filing.  The interesting part will be working at home as a single dad, since I have the kids the next three days...

My wife was scheduled to have her knee joint replaced tuesday, the doc. said go ahead and get under the wire so we did. They expect the Hospital to stop doing elective surgery soon. An old guy working in the OR waiting area came around a corner and coughed two times into a handkerchief a few feet from me. I walked the other way but WTF? Why would they allow him to be there?
Of course we are both thinking about it now, and I was out before eating anything this am pulling a crate apart and got dizzy and she has a headache. I hadn't eaten and was using reading glasses for safety glasses so it' probably self inflicted.
We're sheltering at home in Illinois, I just re-geared a pro 9" ford rear end for a guy and didn't beat the deadline. I'll tell him to bring me a loaf of bread and I'll set his parts in the truck for a no contact deal. I'm prepping the shop to build a frame jig for my 69 firebird chassis project. 2x3 tubing mostly with a smattering of whatever else is here already.  Too many bikes hard to find room to work. lol.

we just got told we're losing a day a week, so 20% pay cut but the fcukers aren't going to let us access our built up holiday leave

and thats only stage 1...they're talking stage two by the end of the week, which means total work shutdown with no pay

but itys all okay as the bosses are planning on socially isloating themselves at their beach houses, and strangely no mention has been made of whether they're taking a 20%/100% pay cut any time in the near future

the govt have announced social security payments to anyone who loses their work over this time but they're going to be so overwhelmed we can expect that to break down fairly quickly

the other upcoming option is accessing our superannuation ( retirement fund) , i don't have a whole lot of that and i had planned on living long enough to spend that on motorcycles and beer

who was it said society is only ever 2 missed meals away from revolution.......

for further information catch up with me in the pissed off thread

Being fully retired for the last two years, I have or had become the neighborhood handyman. With this virus thing and the 6 feet of “social distance”, not only has the work dried up for now, some neighbors won’t answer the front door, they talk through a window.
It’s like we’ll soon need a self adjusting personal digital distance gadget worn around our necks which sounds off when someone’s closer than the “prescribed social distance” mandated by the state or federal gubment.

I still work from the office, but there is like three of us in the building, the rest works from home.  Two kids home from colleges, wife home from school - it is better for everybody if I dont work from home  ;D

Not sure when will the company shut down the building, so far so good.
