So, I bought a Jeep.... 1995 Wrangler
« on: October 20, 2020, 03:23:50 PM »
Sold a few vintage bikes and have been looking for something where the top goes down and the GF and the dogs can go in.
Found this '95 YJ with a CJ front clip/grill and a CJ dash. Drove it a little over 100 miles home at interstate speeds and it did great.

It's had some nice stuff done to it, but it also has a few little quirks that I want to address. I already belong to so many random forums that I've forgotten my log in to all bout about half a dozen. I'm hoping I can get some help here and won't have to join a Jeep forum.

The interior is pretty decent. It has Black Mountain seat covers, a CJ dash and controls (more on that later), a currently non functioning A/C, half doors (including the soft lower half doors), and a Bikini top. The soft top is near new and from Smitty built.
It also has a Kenwood stereo, speaker bar, rear speakers and tweeters in the dash.

It's the 6 cylinder, 5 speed, with about 115K on it.

A couple of the quirks I need to address are one fog light that doesn't light and the A/C. The light should be easy. I can get access to the plug right up front to start trouble shooting. Whoever installed the winch wiring placed it so that I cant get the fuse box off. That's where I would like to start with the A/C.

The seller said the A/C worked and blew cold, then just quit. What can you tell me about this unit? It's like it has no power at all. The On/Off/Fan knob does nothing. The clutch on the compressor never kicks in. Like I said, I'll have to move those battery cables around to get the fuse box lid off, but is this a factory set up? Aftermarket? Is that where the fuse would be?

And it seems like it's always blowing heat through the lower vents, by the hump. I can just stuff a rag in there in the summer, but I'm wondering if they have the CJ controls hooked up wrong? Maybe not closing a flap or something?
This is where it can get messy. I don't want to take off the dash, but I fear I may have to. And it's a YJ, with CJ controls, so I have no idea how to start troubleshooting it.

Welcome to the Jeep family :)

I think the controls are the same for YJ as CJ, there should be some diagrams available at 4WD and Quadratec.  Also there are quite few Jeep forums to ask questions at.

One popular upgrade is to replace the blower motor with a motor from Trail Blazer, at least for CJs.

The heater boxes are basically the same between YJ and CJ so the cabling should be correct, although if I remember correctly, it is possible to install the control cable backwards when you make this change.

The heater and A/C are completely separate.  Although the A/C unit looks aftermarket, it is factory. early production and CJ were dealer installed and used the same lower unit.

Power should come into the A/C unit, when the blower is switched on, power is also routed to the thermostat control and then energizes the A/C clutch.  It's a pretty simple standalone system.  If it suddenly quit working, the fuses would be the first place I look as well.

I think CJs used York piston compressors.
