My 1972 CB750 - what do you like better ?
« on: November 24, 2020, 04:48:18 PM »
I bought this 1972 CB750 from a friend of mine I knew long ago . I grew up in Castro Valley in the 1970s , Arlen Ness lived off Crow Canyon Road . He painted my bike in 1974 ( flames ) , So enough about me - Which paint color do you guys prefer Gold or Brier Brown ? My friends older brother let me ride his 72 Brier Brown in 72 so that’s my preference . How about you guys ?

Always go with your preference! We used to call that “sh*t-brindle brown”, but I always liked it too!

I vote for the flames. that looks good without being overdone.
If not, I would settle for the gold.

Thanks - I like the flames because Arlen was a huge influence on me in the 1970s - I sold this Sportster to his younger brother Kevin Ness in 1979 -

Check the wing jewels on the side covers in the photo with the brown tank, I think one is facing the wrong way.
brown is not my favorite, neither is orange and both don't hold up very well in a lot of sun.
you have to make it yours so............your choice.
just enjoy it.

The K1 Candy Garnet brown is bad for fading..
The one shown here is the 72 brown color..Briar brown  I think it is..

Edit to change Brian to Briar ...

The candy gold fades badly. There was a new 750 in the showroom of a closed dealership for 20 years or more - Dick's Honda, long story - and the side towards the window was barely gold but the other side looked ok when I got in to look around just before it was finally sold (Dick died, I think).

I'd save the flamed tank in either case. If you paint brown, consider 2013 Honda Accord tiger eye pearl. with the white pearl, gold and black stripe. I did one and it was stunning. I sold it but plan to paint another like that.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Dick passed away about 3 years ago, the building was recently torn down. I used to always look at that no miles 76 Supersport whenever I rode by. It never left that showroom till about 2014.

Flamin obvious choice.
It would be a crime to paint over a Arlen Ness paint job.

Wow!
Brings back memories of mine when it was young. I think I only have 3 or 4 pictures of it when it was still that color (one is in my book!).

You will hopefully not paint the flame tank set!
Another complete set good to have for a quick swap.

Briar Brown, mostly spelled Brier Brown which must be wrong is very dark, difficult to see it as brown, right?
The old bikes I have seen have not been brown at all, as a strange color you'll get when mixing all old paint cans you have into one ;)

The new (K1) Garnet Brown tank from Yamiya look good.

I painted a tank with Peugeot Cupid Brown Metallic after I heard from an earlier owner that the bike, CB750 K2 was brown from the very beginning, Briar Brown.
When I saw a sparkling brown metallic Peugeot 3008 SUV in the sunshine in Spain May 2018 I found it to be next color!!
K2 stripes on as well.

Brown metallic seems to be more popular on cars the last years. Mercedes and Volvo have nice versions of brown. Maybe Opel too.
