Back in the Project Business Maybe
« on: April 09, 2021, 06:27:22 PM »
After finishing my one owner 16k original mile CB750K4, (which I ended up keeping), I have been looking high and low for nearly two months for something else. Being the superstitious "Old Fart" I am, I can only say, my offer has been accepted, it will involve traveling a distance, and the mad money account is on its last legs.  I pull out before dawn Sunday morning the 11th, with the Colorado 's GPS set, a MapQuest print out, and yes a Rand McNally also on the front seat. (It is truly a miracle I don't wear suspenders with my belt.)  Yes it is another CB750 and if all goes well pictures and trip highlights will be forthcoming......

I don't understand, the Wife took this one really well, I will check the truck brake lines for cuts before departure.....

Wish Me Luck......

888 miles in one day again, doesn't anybody close to me ever have something to sell.  Picked it up in South Carolina, it was everything I could do not to stop at "Pedro's South of the Border", ( a Interstate 95 tacky landmark on the NC/SC State line.) It is a 1975 CB750 showing 8400 miles on clock and a one owner bike verified by the title.  It was left to the young man I purchased it from by his Grandfather who passed away many years ago.  Ok I know about the add on accessories and fully prepared for the comments that will be forthcoming concerning the bags, built in rear turn signals, scrolled sissy bar, floor boards, and the biggest damn heal/toe shifter known to modern man.  I couldn't figure out what was rolling around in the tank, which looks like new inside BTW, it was a float attached to the gas cap for the built in gas gauge which is completely sun faded. I really do think the bike could have been owned by Austin Powers, and hell yes it has double horns.

The good, the bike has great compression and a quick plug check shows good color.  All lights, horn, turn signals function.   There are some electrical gremlins, sometimes when you turn the key to on, the starter engages, but the starter button does not work. The switch for the lights does nothing, they are on continuously, the PO may have them wired that way, but the test light is going to see a lot of action in the future.

First up will be a good cleaning and the preliminary maintience to see if it runs. After that I am going to have to really think about which direction to go, clean it up with all of the 70's flair in place and sell it as is for a quick turn over.  If I take it back to stock, I am going to have to do some real digging for used parts, "ie" foot pegs, rear turn signals, shift lever, center stand, with the main issue being side covers, I only have one and it is cracked beyond repair.  I know up front this will be a flip bike, I have to replenish the mad money account and currently very motorcycle poor.  It just feels good to have another one to roll on the lift, "Baby".  It will probably be on the back burner for a while however, the spring "Honey Do Chore List" is growing daily along with the lawn, looks like it could be another cut it twice a week season....

Congrats on the purchase!
If you didn't already know, Shoei bags have a loyal cult like following and a good set goes for good money. Wish I could afford to buy a set for my 550.

Nice find. Personally I like the 70's flair. Good luck with it.

I don't think I could ever sell a motorcycle owned by my grandfather. But hey, I'm into motorcycles. I'd sell his stamp collection because I'm not into stamps.

Nice find..... check everything and get it running first. That is the BIGGEST shifter I have ever seen.

Years ago, I threw away a set of Shoei bags, and have always regretted it. Enjoy it!

The shifter matches the rear brake pedal, must have been a big fella.  I recognized the brand name on the bags, I guess it depends on what folks consider vintage. Looks like they will be cleaned up and reconditioned.  I know my Wife will go out of her way and spent big bucks on Primitive antiques.   In my eye, it is an old cabinet or barn box covered in dust with a mattering of chicken poop, complete with fading paint, of course constructed with not a straight board or true angle in the whole piece.

Clean it up the way it ix, some like the cool factor of it , and would pay goid money for it cleaned and working.. they like different... then if that fails , you can always change a few things.
If paint is good,  you may want to get sidecovers from Yamiya..

Looks great as is with the bars and bags - a good solid cruiser. Those gas caps used to bring in big money but not so much anymore.

Stev-o

I go back and forth and appreciate any input. Going make the call after she hopefully fires up.  I passed through the garage today and couldn't resist the temptation.  Hit the tank paint with a dap of cleaner wax and the gas cap plastic with some polishing compound, there is a gauge visible.  Only about 743 things left on the list.....

I always struggle to appreciate the extra graphics on the tanks, I love the simplicity of the K0 tank stripe. Just me.

Some time with high grit sand paper followed by plastic polish will help it clear up. 1500 & 2000 grit. Try a good plastic polish is the way to go first. Then work it with wet 1500 and 2000 grit wet dry paper. With plenty of water....

I would be reluctant to sand it because the chrome around it. I had good luck on my sandcast  guage covers using a Meguiars plastic polish.  I think there were 3 grades, i used the middle one..

Can you say "Crimp Connectors", I think they must have outlawed solder in the State of South Carolina.  I am heading out of town in the morning for a couple of days of Wife time, so I spent the morning trying to figure out why the starter button was not working.  Well there are variables, button will work when the throttle housing halves are apart, when together the bike cranks continuously. Also the throttle housing for the headlight switch, kill switch, and started button was rewired where it exits the internal feed for the handlebars and of course all crimp connectors with different color wires to the stock headlight wiring harness.  The metal relay in the bucket, about the size of an early IBM computer, is for the double horns.  When I have more time I will decide if want to replace the whole right side unit, or try and straighten out what is there with proper wiring and all soldered connections. The good, it cranks over great and there is a good spark to the plugs.

I made a big mistake this morning.  I pulled the finished 74 and the 75 project bike out of the garage at the same time to sweep the floor and get the lift ready.  Side by side makes me realize what a long road ahead waits.  Why do we do this to ourselves Gentlemen?  In my case, I tried golf one time, it was even more frustrating than trying to find the damn short in the starter button.....

The final results and knowing we had the skills or developed the skills to do the job to get the bike into its final state.

Played golf once at a work outing and we played teams and best ball. Surprised they used my ball a few times. Guess I had some beginner's luck. It did not make me want to play golf as a hobby...

We have lift off.  After a good bath, up on the lift and letting the oil drain for a day or two.  Dirty, but no debris or metal flakes including the filter, which by the way was put on with the spring facing the engine and of course no washer in sight.  I taken a few 750 filters off through the years and never found one completely correct yet. Carbs look damn good, just dirty and some varnish in one and two but easily cleaned.  Stock 105 mains, and the slides look like new.  Of course the insulators are hard enough to drive finish nails, so I have ordered a repro set.  I thought about trying the Wintergreen oil soak, but the oil is almost as expensive as the boots. The front brake caliber is frozen, but I believe salvable, probably have to use the grease gun trick to free the piston and since I am on a really tight budget on this one, I will rebuild it and the master cylinder also. Along the budget lines, picked up the side covers for a great price to include the custom paint job.  After some stripping and removing poorly installed filler, they will be ready for paint.  Finally, yes I did spend about an hour with the solder gun and all of the headlight bucket crimp connectors are now in the trash, with new automotive wire.  PO has used THHN wire  used for commercial and high juice installs. I have pulled the gauges, for paint and all of the bulbs and internals gleam, I really do think this is an 8500 actual mile bike.....
