Sidecovers post repair
« on: October 26, 2021, 04:20:07 AM »
Just bought a set of side covers from a Stev-o that must have been broken in transit by usps. Was so disappointed ☹️.
Looks like I am gonna keep em and try and repair . Any suggestions? I was thinking about drilling small hole through both pieces being careful not to go through the paint side using it small finishing nail cut the size as a pen to epoxy and place an extra potsie around me outside of the post at the break.

I've had luck with just using epoxy, but I also put a little oil in the grommet where they mount to make it easier to remove side covers as the rubber gets old an inflexible.

Definitely pin it. I use JB weld and have the best success using 2-3 thin applications. First, just do the mating surfaces. After that has thoroughly dried, overcoat the post. I would also reduce the size of the “ball”, install a new rubber in the frame, and lube it well. You really want the repaired post to slip in easily. Let the others do the work.......

I used these pieces + some JB Plastic Weld and they work well. The posts will need to be shortened and possibly angled to fit properly, and the head may need some material added using the super glue + baking soda method if they're too small for your grommmets.

I've found what works it to take a 2-56 or 4-40 screw and cut the head off.  Then drill a pocket hole in each side of the mating surfaces where the post attaches. Try to center the hole in each component.  Then either 30 minute epoxy or JB weld to coat the threads and holes you drilled.  Use a blind hole on the cover side.  No need to drill though.  Assemble the components with the screw as reinforcement, and wipe off any squeeze out with alcohol.  Wait 24 hours for the cure.

Should work as though it was never broken.

Get some silicone lube to lube the mounting grommets or better yet replace with new.  Fine retention, yet still pop off easy when you want them to.  Hard grommets aren't worth the hassle.

Again, so sorry for the issue orbs.  I did offer you a total refund but you chose a partial for your effort to do the repair.  PM sent...

No worries these things happen. Thanks for the partial.
I really am excited to get the tank color matched now.
Did some surgery tonight. Everything went great but when I was wallowing out the hole on the cover side it happened....went to deep
Ah well, I'll find some nail polish close a match as I can and dab a dot and nobody will ever spot it the size it is.

It was posted recently the lower tab was left black by the factory on some of these bikes.

My mechanic friend always uses Vaseline/Petroleum Jelly for any type of plastic and rubber posts and grommets. It’s always on his shop cart. I’ve started doing the same, especially after I replaced the grommets for my side covers- those things are tight!
