Just a quick setup with the empty cases in the frame.

Will have work on the relationship between the sprocket and swingarm pivot.
Wouldn't want the chain to rub.

The building has begun!
The cleaning and the measuring of stuff at least.

Disassembled my original 550 engine. The one that chewed up it's cam chain guide.
So far I've found the crank bearings to be pitted, any runout is below .001" (.0006 from reading between the lines), the journals are good enough to polish.
The transmission gears and shift forks are in great shape. The big bearings aren't perfect, would replace them if I can find the parts. The transmissions needle bearings were good enough to clean and repack.
Starter gear and cush drives are normal, i'm deleting that kickstart though. Chattery drag of a mechanism it is.
I already have new bottom end seals and chains to go in. New cam chain sliders too. Would like to get new fasteners all around.
Managed to bugger one of the oil galley plugs in the lower half. I'll have to rob one off my other parts engine.
I may have gotten ahead of myself by knocking the valve guides outta the head. The valves themselves were knackered from when the timing chain skipped a beat. The seats didn't take any noticeable damage. So I'll get around to porting the head soon.
The pistons and cylinders showed scarring from the 20 years of parked motorcycle syndrome. Not a problem as the gentlemans express pistons are getting fitted.

It's going to take time to source the NOS parts to reassemble the crank. They do exist, but some people are asking a kings ransom for the shells! I'm waiting til after bmst'22 before ordering in a trickle of parts.

At least with the workshop mostly together, I can whittle away at the to-do list.
Speaking of whittling - the connecting rods got a spa day! They're so smooth and shiny now. Once the digital scale arrives, I'll be sure to balance em out. They were stamped E2, so we'll see if the weight reduction makes them now.

I've been taking video of the processes. Especially fun when the sparks fly. Knocked the poor gopro off the table while the frame was getting the chop.

Made myself a rod balancing scale and went to work.

Had to refine the setup a couple times to get repeatable measurements. By the end of the night. I had things really dialed in.
Conventional wisdom says things are well balanced within a half a gram tolerance. If my weighs and measures are accurate. I've gotten things closer to .25 gram.

I won't be able to weigh in the pistons until they're machined down. But it might be neat to have some "before" figures.

Hopefully can get some attention from the hi performers here.

The oil pump/sump mod. Thought i read the early 650 pump bolted on. So i bought one.
It's not a perfect match, some clarification is needed. The 650 casting has an extra outlet in addition to its girthy rotor. If i can find a full set of screws, i'll try to dye transfer where the main oil holes match on the 550 case.

First completed job on the lathe is done!

The tool post handle broke off. Removing the broken stub from the post was easy. So after finding a suitable threading die. I faced, turned, and cut thread onto the handle, and got it back together.

I will neither confirm nor deny making a guinea pig out of a stator flywheel. Need more tooling to do a nice job of lightening those

One broken cylinder stud caused the fur to really fly around the shed.

Failed attempt at extraction, failed attempts at welding a fastener on, broken carbide drill bits.
I about had enough of the crap and just drilled the piss out of it all.

Which left quite a void to fill in with the tig welder. But those months of practice with the instructor payed off.

Fill it, drill it, fill it, contour it, fill it, file it,
lay it up, transfer punch it, center punch it, level it, clamp it pilot it.
Bore it, tap it, thread it, and check it.

They didn't teach this at MC School

That old cylinder stud was really stuck in there. Probably coulda made life easier if I hadn't broke an extractor tool. Or jumped to welding nuts on before just drilling it out.
The spare parts engine has a broken rear mount and the crank bearing stamps are alphabet soup.
Saving the cases was a good test of my skills, tooling, and patience.
This set must have been made by someone having a good day at the factory.

Kinda lends itself to a namesake for the build.

Figured since i am going to be putting a race cam in the head, i might as well try on some nice valve tappet adjusters with their own stem follower.

So i ordered one from the Milwaukee bar n shield store. Expecting to have to drill and rethread for sae sizes.

Nope. Fit right in. No brainer modification. Guess i'll order 7 more.

I dunno if the honda 550 and 750 tappet adjusters are interchangeable.

Probably gonna pass on the titanium locknuts. Frugality is a priority for the rookie build.

We used to call that type of adjusters "elephant feet". They may be too thick at the foot to fit and allow valve clearance? Compare to a rocker with a stock adjuster set approximately where it would be when installed. They are obviously heavier than stock, and the weight is at the worst possible place. They also put more side-loads on the valve-stem since they have more contact area with the top of the stem than the slightly curved stock adjuster.

Been losing sleep on account of the various 1 moto commando gremlins.

Results are in, elephant foot vs oem adjuster

Scale weights

Oem, a heavenly 3.33 grams
Milwaukee Elephant, stomping around at 4.51 grams

The difference in weight sounds worse when reported by percentages.

That storm dumped 0.64 inch of rain on wendover in a matter of hours. Salt lake city reported their day of rainfall was nearly equivalent to an entire season average.

The long term forecast claims possibilities of scattered showers over the next week. Hopefully its only trace amounts of precip from here.

Havent gotten the motivation to put together a mock valve and head for testing all the fitment yet.

Pursuing this idea mainly because the "slightly rounded" oem adjuster starts to find an edge as the valve lift reaches higher. Even with the butchered rocker paddle on stock cam touching .315" - the dial indicator went from being on center to... not on center. Skewes the result some.

If things work out, hopefully the tappet adjuster will follow the valve evenly to race lift spec.

Been searching ebay for a set of carburetors.

Can ya believe it? People want $1200 for kz900's 29mm smoothbores!!!!
$250-$400 for a crusty set of kz650 or cb750 carbs.

But over in the mini-bike hot rod category - there are 30mm pwk carbs priced like an applebees date night menu.

Question is. How much trouble am I willing to go through for cheap speed 🤔

Small step of progress on the race bike.
Low offset oem triples arrived.
The budget decided a leading link front end would be wiser than gsxr swapping.
Since there is a full set of used atv shocks on the self, i may just use the front pair.
They're longer travel than necessary, but the colors match - Pure vanity.

Still need to decide on a front wheel. Have leftover 19" mags from the xs, bur not sure where the axle went 🤷‍♂️

Also discovered the lathe chuck won't hold a 2" round stock and the jaws aren't reversible - so investing in a chuck precludes much advancement in the build.
