You doing the trade?
I thought you might keep the 500 ?

That's a very nice CB400F and looks like it has the same paint color combination as a 78' CB550K.
I hear the cam chain needing adjustment but aside from that looks great.

Im skipping the trade for the 400-4, it doesnt call out to me and needs some work to look pretty again, doesnt have original pipes...yada yada.

I talked to the guy this evening and says since ive confirmed a price in person he needs to justify it with the wife.

Bike is still listed at 8k on fb marketplace, maybe 1-2 messages a week.

Ive got another video coming it will be linked here shortly, start up video and ride it around a little bit.

Hi there. Fellow Michigan guy, I've been watching the eBay auction and was curious if you sold the bike or if it was available.  Please shoot me a note when you have a chance or call me, 616.551.6939 (grand rapids).

Thanks,

this week would have been a great time to get some serious miles on this bike cause it was still kinda warm but I hurt my back on Monday and wasn't able to balance on a bike until yesterday. Anyway, I took the 500 out and have been riding it around most of the day. This bike is just lovely, runs like a top, no issues and LOVES 80MPH....took it on M-59, 696 and I-94 today and it was flawless...the only thing I want to change is how hard the clutch pulls in.

Wow, number one intake valve spring failed, valve guides failed, Valve dropped and punched a hole in my piston, it looks like chaos In the motor. I’ll open it up tomorrow and take a look at the damage…motor still turns over Mickey I’m wondering if my cylinder is #$%*ed.

Ugh. I can't believe I thought the bike was going to be able to ride there and cant forgive myself for not checking before going. I LITERALLY looked at Frank's damn valve cap wrench and was like, "yup, you are getting used today"...blah blah family #$%*, I get on the bike and blow the motor up in 4 miles.
It looks like a bullet was shot through the piston.

Right now I hope the cylinders aren't destroyed and don't think connecting rods are damaged, motor turns over nicely
and cant wait to see what the oil pan looks like. We have nos cb500 pistons and rings in stock as well as my original 73' cb500 motor in stock to donate what is needed.

This was user error - these bikes have made me take a long look in the mirror many times.

edit: I remember when we went into the motor that exact valve spring had heavy rust/pitting on it.

So are you blaming not replacing that spring for the failure?
That is real bad news and a worry for all us with 500s of that era. I feel real sorry for you after must be 6 months of on/off work.

Well, my buddy told me the initial damage is something no one can predict, but me thinking the bike would make it to the shop after i heard a noise is my fault. This could have been limited to just head work, possibly even saving the head. Im not too upset about this, I dont have to come out of pocket or anything up front because we have parts and material on hand already. LABOR and a bore job will eat up my wallet potentially if the cylinder is smoked but im more worried about making the bike whole again rather than my profit margins....profit margins dont exist anymore i dont think after this incident lol.

Hi Shtonecb500,
I hope your orig. cylinder head is still salvageable and it's a good thing you have those nice used parts to choose from.
I hope this problem won't hold up your great progress on this CB500K0 project you've enjoyed.

thanks, everyone. I will for sure let you guys know if i need anything, i have zero desire to do anything but get the bike back up and running and in riding condition again and have no intentions on waiting a month to do so.

pulled the top end off the donor motor including the jugs and the #1 piston, got it stripped of paint which took 3-4 coats aircraft stripper with water wash down in between, removed valves and springs and tossed it in the sandblaster.

Happy Friday, the motor IS worst case scenario, has a bent rod need to split the cases. All the rods are letter "D" with "#2" so I have to get the bottom donor end up to the shop potentially will have to use donor rods if major difference.

The good:  I have .25 over pistons brand new, oem gaskets brand new, cylinder will get overbore and the wrecked piston will become a desk ornament, lol. A few of the other valve springs have pitting on them just like the one that failed.
