K1 late model - Winton Kit
« on: July 11, 2022, 03:37:30 PM »
Hi,

I purchased this K1 out of metro Detroit this morning, it came just as pictures show. I have a body kit but not the brown one pictured, and the molds/forms, It looks like they started installing all of this stuff back in the day and never finished it.

Never seen shocks like this before, the unicorn mount is cracked in two places but I have a replacement in storage, the swing arm is chromed, trick wheel in the back, no pressure in the shocks right now, tank is fantastic inside and out, no side covers, no fenders, no turn signal, has hooker exhaust no baffles, oil cooler, I think the motor is big bored but i haven't verified it yet (im assuming this based on the allen bolt kit and the oil cooler/amount of pressure to kick it over), the choke moves smoothly didn't check carb bowls yet, kickstart kicks over nicely with TONS of pressure, no brackets or calipers, no stock handle bar or any switches, no throttle cables, there is a clutch cable, the seat is 100% original and in perfect condition, no major damage to the frame anywhere.

I bought this bike for the wheels, rotors, and if the motor was bored out, that too. I'm gonna ask Phil if he wants to buy it and restore it since he has almost everything to make it whole again, otherwise Once I put some stock wheels back on it, signals, and some shocks im listing it and getting rid of it. I don't have the money to restore it.

time to find out the differences in the body work on the k1 versus other models.

the fat raised good year lettering is awesome.

A very nice K1  :) with plenty of custom work done to it;that hydraulic shock is awesome.
This is a terrific one-off custom 'find'.

I wonder what rear disc hub you have there ?

Do they have any type of brand name stamped into the parts ?

To answer your question: I would try running that just to see how it rides.  8)
The black diaphragm-looking part must be the hydraulic suspension adjuster.

well, that bike certainly has a story to tell.  Maybe the story is only as interesting as what you have already told us.  Maybe more.  Maybe more of the story can be found.  But for sure, once those parts and molds and pictures get separated, the story is over.

Not really trying to lecture you or tell ya what you should do with that bike.  Hell, I don't know that I would do any different.  Just maybe consider that this bikes story may be a lot more interesting than your typical "bought brand new in 1971, rode for a year or two until family started, then stored in the basement for 50 years, refurbished, sold on BaT to some rich guy for 20k, sits in collection, blah blah...."
If it works good, it looks good...

His first name was Winton, worked for ROUSH, I got this in Garden City so probably whatever location is nearest that. He was a big guy weighing 260-280, which explains the heavy duty shocks he came up with, or maybe someone at work helped him with this stuff?  He rode the bike around for a while stock which explains the miles also with his wife on it and wanted to beef them up. The seller acquired the bike with the kit on it, the seat and tank were in boxes wrapped in towels and blankets. various things are missing like the petcock, a seat pin, no exhaust clamps, handle bar switches, grips, mirrors, front fender, spare caliper..... The guying selling it to me said this man made this body kit himself, thats the kind of work he did for ROUSH. I don't remember what happened to the builder but the seller acquired it from the builders family, his name is on the title, its the original title. Winton Goelz Jr.

I managed to get everything as a package deal because I didn't want separate the kit, didnt want to make an insulting offer for the kit either so I told him I would come back end of month and pay a fair price. We made a deal tho. There were pictures of this bike that he has and I guess I didnt load them, Ill take a ride back over there, get the photos and maybe some more info on the guy?

I was going to finish painting this kit, but thats gonna take some time. I figured giving the bike to someone seasoned with a good exhaust was a better route for the bike...It wouldn't go to bringatrailer at least lol..Phil sells all his stuff locally so it will stay in Michigan.

took off the little cap and compressed it, its air shocks. Ill pump them up tomorrow and see if they hold....gonna put a battery in there tomorrow as well and see if this thing lights up, there is oil in it the oil tank and its not full. Do you just pump them to the desired height and sit on it, or should I be looking for a specific lbs.?

I wonder how many of these he built?

there are no markings on the rims except the number "40" prolly for the number of spokes....they look like akront....same as on my 550.

Nice build with a history.
CB750 had to be rebuilt many years ago. Stock was lame...
I remember the thoughts and sayings ... ;)

Good stock parts saved so bike can be transferred back to stock. Another set of wheels, save the old if rebuilding it.

But this build is very interesting and might have a value depending on the builders fame or backround.

Investigate more before changing it.
Clean, polish, service to make it to run well again can be first step.

Those are some interesting pieces of the story coming together. It's probably an unfinished drag bike he was building.
The air shocks may have been designed to act as struts for more HP transfer to the wheel??? (Just guessing at that from the rod to act as a limiter) interesting design though.
If you get it running put it on a dyno, you might find it's very healthy...... and test the shocks on the dyno too to see if they make a difference at high pressure.
This could be a special bike if left together and you get all the hidden parts of the story together of the Rouch team involvement/design(written documenting will be necessary for highest value as you probably know).
That rear master cylinder is interesting as I have 3 Pagehiln master cylinders(looks very similar) mounted on Seeley 750 K set back foot controls for rear disc brake conversions. They came from a retired friend who with his brothers had Ross Seeley Race Shop.
I've heard from members here that the Hurst Airheart master cylinders were used on cart racer brakes. Probably made by the same manufacturer with special casting made for each to have the desired name on them.

the fiberglass is all one body, the tank has a lucas style gas cap that goes on it., petcock attachment is on the right side angled outward.

the original tank, seat, and side covers come off to run the body kit.

I pulled the jets today, they are black and gummed up but two of them cleaned up very easly the other ones need some thin wire to be pushed through the hole that i didn't have, the bowls don't look terrible either, I oiled a bunch of the moving parts all over. I started on the rear wheel today and the shocks, the shocks are air shocks and took and hold air just fine. That outer rod with threaded ends got adjusted to the max by me, one side was higher than the other anyway, they feel good but they need more travel for road use, this makes me think this was being built for the drag strip I wonder if i install a longer rod with threaded ends if that will give me more range in the shock?. The center stand is missing the C bracket and spring so it was bending, I got ii all back in shape and installed some bolts to keep things tight down there. The custom caliper bracket that they made rubs the rotor at the bottom, it needs material shaved off I think, its light weight aluminum. I took the caliper apart and sprayed with brake cleaner, Not sure how to bleed the rear master cylinder yet but thats operating much smoother now as well.

This will be the second motor that has gone through my hands that had big bore work on it, and i didn't keep (if this has bore work done), if it has bore work and i chose to sell the roller to someone to restore, I would feel terrible separating the chassis and motor.

looked at the caliper brackets and stuff, knowing they were in a roush building, i wonder if they cnc cut this stuff themselves? i cant find any markings on the hub to indicate maker.

i reached out to some local parts guys looking for fenders and signals. The front tire has a giant crack in the sidewall, i was hoping they were together enough i could take it around the block on this rubber but thats a no go. I will for sure keep these tires for some display wheels though, the super fat lettering of the goodyear is cool to see. The sealed beam  bulb is broken but not sure if its low or high beam, everything in the bucket is hooked up except for the missing switch housing wires, I put a batter in there, none of the display lights came on....ill do a compression test tomorrow, the points plate looks brand spanking new, rear mc has been cleaned out and I see the air return and bubbles, cleaned it out with brake cleaner,  I hope this thing fires up when the time comes.

I like those rear shocks, very custom looking.
That rear caliper looks high quality and hope you can adjust/machine the caliper brackets to give the pads full contact with the entire swept area of the rotor.
What's that square red piece on top of the rear master cylinder ?
