34 Years Later...
« on: June 14, 2005, 10:11:31 AM »
Bob Wessner mentioned to 50WORDS that he wanted to take a picture of his K0 in the same spot 22 years after an earlier pic. I've got you beat, Bob - this is 34 years later. My parents house (no, I don't still live there), same bike, same license plate. Of course the original exhaust are long gone, but there's still hope.

Now that, sir, is very cool!  And just look at how that tree in back has grown.

You're right Rich, I couldn't, nice picture pairing. I bet not many have the circumstances to even give it a try.

Wow! Amazing...yeah, look at the change in girth of the, uhm, tree  :D I found myself staring at those pictures while I had a flashback of my own life the last 34 years! Thanks for sharing these pictures, somehow this sums up the essence of SOHCing for me....by having my bike and riding it daily I have this strange, direct link to "the day".

I was born in 71, so I find that first picture special. Congratulations for being here still after 34 years. May I be around in 34 years time...

Not bad at all for a 35 year old machine. What changed to allow you more riding time?

I think I've mentioned this before in another post, but my nephew was killed on a bike in 1990. My sister lives close to me, and I felt bad about riding the bike around her. Also the traffic in the Maryland suburbs of DC had gotten progressively worse, so I pretty much parked it in '90. I mentioned the bike to a co-worker, and he was interested in buying and restoring it (as he had done a Ducati), so I sold it in '99. He fixed the front brake, replaced the tires, and then let it sit. I kept asking him how the restoration was coming, but he seemed to be loosing interest. He retired in '03, and moved out of state, but sold it back to me (for less than I sold it to him) before he left. The tank was really cruddy, and the carbs so gummed up the throttle wouldn't even move. I POR-15'ed the tank, rebuilt the carbs, put new Mac 4-into-2 exhaust on it, but it still ran rough. I hate to admit it, but I took it to a Honda shop to have the carbs sync'ed, since I don't have the equipment or the talent. When I got it back, it was like old times again - runs like a top. I have a  Maryland 'Historic Vehicle' tag on it (cheaper and no inspection) which allows me to use a vintage (1970) tag on it, which has restricted usage - pretty much no daily commuting. I also retired a few years back, and I'm only doing part-time work, so I can ride the bike at my leisure.
Well, that's it in a large nutshell, probably more than you wanted to know.

Thought I'd resurrect this nice post, since I'm on a nostalgia thing at the moment. I wonder how many of us could do the same thing? How many of us have owned a bike for that long, I wonder. Wait a minute, I feel a poll coming on!

Richard, at what point were the bars changed? During your friends restoration?

That's pretty neat to have the same bike 34 years later, and be able to take a picture of it at the same house and same location at the house is pretty neat also. You have kept that bike in nice shape. I have an old BSA 650 Thunderbolt that I have owned for about 23 years now. Currently it is being rebuilt by myself.
Take care and here's to many more rides for you ;D ;D ;D ;D

Very cool pictures.

It would be impossible for me to do pictures like that because I don't have any older pictures, but I have owned my 75 550f for 26 years.

I also have ridden my bike more in the last 6 months than in the last 5 years mostly because a lot of my friends are having there mid life crisis's and buying a riding motorcycles.
