I've attached a fitment chart for the specs you've provided for your CB400F

Tires with pinch angles shown on the chart in red (dark orange?) are sufficiently outside of the recommended range, that it's probably worth reconsidering their use.

It would be a good idea to move all this info (esp Towers fitment charts)  to the FAQ as this topic comes up all the time.

cheers

many thanks Tower, I will need to check when I replace tyres now, the existing one's are both in the red.
The FAQ idea from andy750 is a good one.

I squeezed a 150 Perrelli on a stock 18 750 rim.

It went on a bit hard, and has a lot of sidewall angle!

But I was after Traction  and a bit of comfort..running struts.. a bit rough on a 600 mile day when you havent ridden for years..

Comparative fitment isn't as simple as the charts I've created suggests.  Manufacturers tweak the tyre sizes considerably, more than the standards really allow them to.  Tyres sold on the metric/universal standard vary much less than the old Imperial measures.  Nevertheless, a 1/4" or more variance between manufacturers of the same universal tyre size is still common.  In the older tyres, the ratios of tread width to tyre height were almost proprietary and ranged a significant amount, perhaps as much as 20%.  Even within a single manufacturer, tyre aspect for standard rating versus, high performance versus super high speed ratings also differed by up to 5%.

Having said that, the chart is still a fairly accurate comparison using the theoretical standards as a guide.  The fitment chart should be used as a fairly accurate starting point, but, any given tyre can still vary from the standard measures provided.

Please note, on the 400F, the suggested tyres were Imperial, S rated tyres.  Hence, I have updated the chart, replacing the previous H rated with S rated measures where it made sense.  (S rating comes with a higher aspect ratio on average than H rated tires.)  Also, since wider seems to be the rule, I have not included tyres that are narrower than Honda's recommendation.

Bob (or any other moderator), I'd be glad to create a series of fitment charts for the FAQ, if that is something that might help.

As tower said, and I said before, manufacturers use the size as a pallpark more than anything. a 130 for dunlop will not be the same as a 130 from avon for example. So you should always check with the manufacturer on the tire you are looking at.

i run a 120-90-19 kenda challenger on the front of my '73 750k. it makes for a much cleaner look, the fender really hugs the tire profile. i think i'm running a 120-100-18 on the back now, but can't be sure, because my bike is in one of my club-brother's garages right now...sort of got excited when the thermometer hit 68 and took off far from home, to be greeted by freezing rain while enjoying beers with said brother. anyway, the 120-90-18 looks great, but was just a scoach (schoche, schootch, spellcheck hates these words) anyway, was too wide, so i have these handy little grooves where a little bracket that holds my brake line rubs, made noise and stunk for a few miles, but now it's all gravy! anyway, what i would really like to know is what is the widest rear tire i can run with a stock rear end set-up? i just put on new sprockets and chain last summer, and really dont want to have to buy offest sprocket kits. so what will work, oh gurus of the single cam? btw, if you WANT offset sprockets, or feel like boring your k motor out to 1061cc and making 130 hp check out www.cyclexchange.com  really cool site with lots of badass honda parts. last time i checked they had a turbo kit for about 1200 USD. OH, and give Kenda Challengers a try! can't beat 'em for $50 a pop! sticky as hell and good in the rain, but i have to replace my rear tire every season....but i put about 4,000 miles on my bike a season. and no, i have no economic affiliation with any of these people, just promoting what works for me. enjoy, and stay in the wind!

You hit it right on the head wardog. I myself am trying to find out what is the widest rear tire I can go with using a stock swingarm and one of cyclechange.net's offset sprockets. Luckily I have a head-up on the game being the owner of a 77' cb750. I'm already running a 130 on the rear with stock sprocket, but a 170 would be nice!

I've forgotten how to do trig on my slide rule, so its all spreadsheet stuff.   ;D

Let me know what rim size you want to compare and I'll post the equivalent fitment chart.

You still have a sliderule?

Do the 110 & 120 rears have the same height when mounted on the same size rim?

The profile of the tire NUMBER is being left out.
The height of the tire and the profile width is very important.

A 130/80-17 rear is the same OD as a 110/90-19 front.

There is a formula for figuring out the OD of any particular tire.

I would try to get matching brand tires that have OD's that are close.
Just get a sheet of paper and start writing them down. UNFORTUNATELY the manufacturers do not give OD's of their tires . You have to figure them all out, one by one.

I have read the comparison chart that Tower has created for CB750. Rim size vs tire and angle. These should match front and rear to get a proper handling of the bike.
I'll go for 100/90-19" on my front 1.85" rims, 120/90-18" on my rear 2.15" rims. Fattest possible as I interpreted the chart.
Metzeler Lasertec H  tires.

I like Metzeler since my old ME-99 rear had a nice handling that lost the grip perfectly smooth with full control when using the throttle. The Lasertecs have a good look too.
Maybe Bridgestone Battlax are told to be slightly better, but I'm sure Lasertec will be good enough anyway.

I don't think there are better street tires than the Metzelers.  Different, yes, better, no.

However, I use the inch sizes available from Metzeler 3.25x19 front and 4.00x18 rear, as in my experience, the stock sizes handle better over their entire wear life than oversize tires do.  Oversize tires lose their tread crown far faster than the stock sizes, when place on the stock rims.
