Started on the 1978 HONDA CB750F restoratin project

Hi all members
So I got started on the 1978 HONDA CB750F and there is a lot to do
pulled the bike apart and send every thing out for powder coat
waiting on some more parts to come back from powder coat as I figured out that painting is not what in going to waist my time on
Also send a bucket of bolt's and nut's out for coating. Got a bit fancy this time
plating all the bolts makes a huge difference on the out come of the restoration
I'm going to post the results as I progress with the project

You have your hands full  ;)  It'll come out nice.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Hi
Just picked up a parts bike

Tank is clean and no rust at all inside
Got the missing gauges and other parts I need
Wheels are in beautiful shape and they are not marked up as bad as the set that came om the 1977 bike
Its a runner (need carbs done) no idel on cylinder  #2 spray with carb cleaner and it comes on board
Bike sat for 12 years and all the oil had drained in to the engine (need oil pump rebuild stopper not sealing)
I did prime the engine before I tried to turn it over and changed oil filter. Checked for junk in filter and it's clean
Hooked up my oil accumulator (best thing I have bought ) and primed the oil and filled the filter
Can hear the air being pushed out of the oil galleys and up to the top end
Good thing to do before startup

I like idea of the use of the oil accumulator to prime the system before startup.

Hey Hansel,

Looks like a great start.  Especially having all the parts and nuts and bolts ready to go.  I did mine as I went and it has taken a long time.  Please post more pictures as you progress and good luck.

Time for a update on the CB750F
 
Got the tank liner installed POR15 Kit
Took me 6 hours to do and looks good

Cleaned the rear brake reservoir. so faded from the sun and looking bad
1# glass blasted it very lite low pressure just to remove the sun faded plastic
2# Clear coated and sanded and looks good. Used the RUST-OLEUM for use on plastic

Seat is done with new cover and repaired and painted seat pan

Got some more stuff mounted on the frame
side covers are on order from FB-STUFF store They look good on the pictures

Paint is booked for November 20 th and that is going to cost a fortune

Time for a update
The front forks are installed and fender. Need to clean front rim and replace the tire
Head light bucket and all wiring is done
Handel bars are installed and all handle bar switches and new OEM Honda mirrors (made in Japan by HM )$$$$

Have a look at the head light mounting ears
They are powder coated in SUPER chrome .The chrome was in bad shape and the cost to have re chromed here in Canada
is very expensive. I do have a new NOS RH side looking for a LH side NOS will find one I hope

Just received the new side covers from FB-STUFF store on Friday.They look good and fitment is nice
Thanks FB-stuff for making a good Quality re-production cover

Tank and covers and tail in going for paint tomorrow after work
and the painter will install the tank stripe and clear over the stripe

hoping the to have the bike ready to go in to the bike show in January. CVMG/NORAL is having a display in the show ??
Might have to be on display as a project bike. Less engine if i cant get it done

This might be the way to go in the future if chrome is out of reach in the price range
Its very expensive here in Canada
The only place we can have it chromed is Calgary Alberta and the cost is sky high

I might have a friend shoot a couple of K model bracket ears and maybe a fender as a rest run(all are pitted) to see how they look this winter.

OK
The metal has to be clean and the pitting has to be minimal due to the popping of the powder coat
The shop did them 6 times as a test project
The pitting keep popping the powder coat as it boils  when they put it in the oven to bake
What the did to prevent it
They filled the rust pitting with HI temp BJ epoxy  weld and sanded it down

Other thing to do is to fill with low temp Brazing material so the powder coat don't pop when heated /baked at 400 deg
That is some thing I will try next time

They did a nice job on all my parts

I sure like that result in those fork ears. I’ve seen some samples of that “chrome” powder coat (+clear coat) locally and thinking my Rickman CR frame is going that route. Chrome is crazy expensive in Ontario too and I can’t even find any one I could trust to bright nickel plate my frame. That finish is so close, it might just have to do!

I don't know if the Rickman frame is welded or brazed. If brazed, you won't like the result of powdercating as the heat will melt the brazing and you will be left with a pile of loose tubing. Someone tried to do it on a Seeley frame.

brazing is 900-1200 deg F

The fork ears are looking a lot better with the head light and the gauges installed
looking from s distance it's a bit darker Sill look good

I'm looking for Engine paint to match the Honda Engine paint 
any body know what to use
my plan is to pull Head and cylinder off the engine and re ring and do a valve grind.Then repaint head and cylinder
can't find the right black that has the right color black
If there is some one that has any suggestion pleas let me know

DupliColor makes a really nice semi-gloss black engine enamel in a spray can.  Any O'Rielly's, Auto Zone or the like will have it.

That’s what Ithought on the temps. +1 on the Dupli-color semi gloss. Very close match.

My bad rememberer.....
It wasn't powder coating causing the bronze to melt, it was galvanic process to remove the nickle finish that had failed in this post on a Seeley frame.....

1972 Suzuki GT380 I had charge of it for a year in 1973 while my friend was deployed and learned to love street riding....
New CB450 K7 after my friend returned...
New CB750 K5 Planet Blue, demise by ex cousin in law at 9,000 miles...
New CB750 K6 Anteres Red, to replace the totaled K5, I sold this K6 at 45k in 1983, I had heavily modified it, many great memories on it and have missed it greatly.....
