2024 BMST
« on: March 03, 2024, 08:35:09 PM »
A change of plans.............I will be competing for landspeed records in August.

The reason: Our daughter had a skiing accident and broke her pelvis along with numerous torn muscles and legiments. No other serious injuries. We are providing assistance during the 5-month period until she can get back on her feet. We are in Pocatello and currently shovelling snow.

When I add the last touches to the bike, I will post in the old C.B.R. thread. I already have a fresh valve and cam combo and test-rode the bike last summer. Any and all 'visitors' will be appreciated if only to take pics and maybe drive my Jeep on the salt between runs.

That's great news Dennis, except about your daughter's accident. :( Is the bike currently in Idaho?

August 24-29................Sunday - Thursday..............I arrive on Thursday PM and help with set-up on Friday. Saturday is tech-inspection. Sunday begins with a rider's meeting usually at 9; followed by 1st-runs at about 11;...........I stay at the Hotel 6 because its got the best showers and clean rooms.............authentic Mexican food will be available! ;D

Terry, the guy that had the 'Preacher' bike in 2018, is from Florida and is planning to run another CB750 with a side-car. A CB750 owner, Frank from Minnesota, is also planning to attend and likely to bring a friend.

My long-sought-after goal of exceeding 150-mph feels achievable ;) ;)

My usual is to arrive Friday and depart Wednesday. I drive. Stay also at Motel 6. Gotta book. I will use hotels.com probably since they will allow cancellations in case.

If you are flying as I assume, fly into Salt Lake City and grab a rental car/van. It is less than 2 hours straight drive to Wendover, Utah where the motels are or stay at one of the casinos on the other side of the state line in Wendover, Nevada. Same town.

Sorry to hear about your daughter’s accident, that is awful! What is her first name and last name initials so IO can add her to prayer list…
Long recoveries suck! Been through too many, they have a mental physical and emotional toll on you and drs are ok at treating the physical, but the other 2 are harder I think, I’ve had too many 8 month or 18 month recoveries and am staring at another this year when we do na right hip replacement. My car is a Mini Cooper S and it is a manual transmission, an anti-theft device for many…
Only having 10 round trips paid by Medicare I don't have the budget available for a lot of expense beyond that…inflation has ravaged my SSDI income
David

Hoping and praying your daughter heals well and you all have the safety ands strength to endure everything that comes your way…

David
David- back in the desert SW!

At least she's on the mend, much respect for the ski patrol.

Will be good to see you on the salt

Thankyou David, Christian prayer is welcome...............She is known as Dr. A.J. and has a 'faithful' support group including members of our church and dozens of her pals. PT at the house and regular meals are delivered by her freinds. She is participating with all staff meeting and other on-line activities. When she returns to 'walking; work she will owe many hours of fill-in work to her fellow staff members at Idaho State University where she is a professor in the Family Medicine residency and director of a Wilderness Medicine program.

Prayers and best wishes are also expressed for you!

Bomber...........see you at inspection :)

Frank...........I have room in my Jeep for a Thursday pickup at the SLS airport............or could coordinate with Frank from MN for Friday or Saturday and return on Wed or Thur. Jerry will have the Corvette and NO room. Danny will have a 4-door pickup and my Jeep should be good transportation to and from the salt. If your on a shorter schedule, then the rental car is best. Over the next 3-4 months other options will pop-up.

Dennis, thanks for the information. Once i verify my own race schedule,  I'll make a decision on my attendance status. I'm going to check with my brother to see if he wants to go as well.  We'll probably rent a car to get around.

Dennis, you mentioned in a PM about some fancy-dancy programmable ignition, and after looking at it, I wouldn't bother. You will be running the motor at full advance going down the salt. Remember, the whole reason for retarding the timing at the end of a drag strip is due to the increased load of the wind at 100+ MPH, and you will be going that fast in third gear, so you can just retard the initial setting. ;D
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Jerry needs to lend his new-in-box Gerex Multi-spark ignition to the effort. ;D It's not doing any good under his bed, and I'd trust it a lot more than an unknown system from Poland or where ever it came from. I think I would trust the Dyna more than the fancy one, after all, you nearly made it to 150 MPH with it.

Scott................New Ignitech unit is wired and my lap-top can read it :) Now making a new rotor adabtor to get SPARK :o   The primary reason for the new ignition is to have a rev-limiter.  All is expected to be installed before July 4th.  I could re-install the Dynatech unit if I have problems. The CX-7 cam has slightly changed the valve-overlap profile...........so I have reduced the RPM expectations but should have added power (torque) in the 8-9 range. With 17 x 40 sprockets for 1st-run, the paper-expections are 154-MPH with the fairing. Still trying to coordinate a dyno-test here in Pocatello.

Some good ignitions come out of Europe. Here is a very good unit.....I have one waiting for my CBX engine to be completed. https://www.elektronik-sachse.de/shopsystem-3/en/digital-ignition-zdg-3-23-for-honda-cb750.html
Magneti Marelli comes to mind too.....if it's good enough for F1.... ;) ;D

Jerry.............I have no idea what could be under your bed.........but I have been in your parts room 8)

Scott and/or Mike..........So I first wired the Ignitech unit and install the crank-rotor with welded full-advance using Dynatech pick-ups. No spark.......So now waiting for a machinest to make a new rotor with a setting-pin to fit the crank and a locking-pin to hold the magnitized rotor supplied by Ignitech along with their dual pick-ups.

Question......with #1 at TDC, do I set the leading edge of the new rotor at 0 according to the T-mark, or at 0 between the F-marks and then set the module to 10-degrees from 0 to 1000 RPM before ramping up to 40-degees just before 3000 RPM?

Dennis, I have no clue how you are supposed to set that thing up. I did some research on it when you first told me about it, but couldn't find much in the way of real details. From what I've found in the past, programmable advance systems tend to set the "static" timing at TDC, and then calculate the desired advance. What are the options for the advance curves? The stock timing at full advance is 35* BTDC at around 2500 RPM, but since you want to retard the timing by 5*, is there an available curve for that? Will this system produce a better spark than the Dyna, or is it more like the Dyna 2000 that had similar features, but produced the same spark as the standard Dyna S. The system Mike mentioned also seems to be an inductive type spark, judging from the coil's primary resistance.
The only thing you are gaining is a rev limiter, which won't make you faster. ;) Springs and weights can tailor the advance curve, but it's all-in well below the power band, so it's not really an issue.
Russ Collins said the Gerex CDI was one of the few ignitions that actually made more HP. ;D Jerry moved on to do ignitions for Maserati or Ferrari or some other exotic car company..
