Permatex Seal & Lock - Oil pan bolts
« on: March 09, 2024, 08:56:56 AM »
Needed to pull my oil pan because it was basically weeping from multiple areas. I'm pretty sure I over torqued the bolts. Could have sworn I did no more than 6 lbs but in taking them off they felt way higher than that. This time I'll hand tighten with a quarter turn.

Last I checked using gasket seal isn't preferred and that's fine. But I would like to get some better thread locker on there. In additional to the over torque I"m pretty sure I had oil weep through the threads too. I came across this Permatex Seal & Lock. I've not used it before and was wondering if anyone else had?

Or, if you have a better recommendation, I'm all ears!

I wouldnt use a thread locker and never use a torque wrench on those 6mm bolts

I have used 6mm copper washers under the oil pan bolts with success. I have also purchased a bike with a warped oil pan that the only way to stop the leaking was replace the oil pan. Check the pan for "trueness". Cliff.

Allen head bolts most of the time.
I have not seen any leak. But sealing washers good to have in mind if oil can leak via the bolt hole going thru into oil. I thought all  threads in case were blind holes.

I use torque wrench on M6 to ensure equal torque and not too much. Small  1/4" 2.5-25Nm wrench, german brand Hazet.

Engine covers 5Nm, max 7.5Nm with new gasket.
Cam holder bolts 8Nm with good threads. 9Nm with time serts.
Honda specified too much for those.

Short bolt can cause problems.
I found one bad oil pan thread on my K2. Bolt lenght 25mm, replaced with 30mm bolt and OK.

No thread locker or sealer on engine covers. Pita next time.

Oil pan can be sanded flat if it has marks. A4 paper grit 240  fastened on a flat board. When no scratches, use grit 400 paper or a worn 240.

Here a clutch cover that got a massage.

Didn't Hondaman suggest some sort of sealant on bolts that pass through oil before engaging threads on the engine block?

As far as I can tell the pan is flat. I like the sealing washer idea. I think I'll go that route for piece of mind. I do have Allen's on there.
