Topic: CB650 Starter Clutch Rollers

Question....

Did Honda change the starter clutch rollers at some point? A set of 3 that I ordered just came in and they're very small compared to what was in the clutch before. Triple checked the part numbers to make sure I wasn't losing it but no, it's the right part number.

Has anybody experienced this?

It's been a few years since I've had one of my 400F ones apart (identical I think) but the small one looks wrong, the big one looks correct. It also looks fine, why are you replacing them?

That small one is 100% wrong. Every single resource I've seen, including pics of starter clutches removed from motors shows the fat roller is correct one. You may have received wrongly packaged parts or something.

+1 the part number is correct (same part as my 500/550s use), but those little rollers are clearly not the right ones!

The small pin part as noted is incorrect as they normally have a different metal cap on one end in a darker metal. Likely an incorrect packaging issue at the supplier.

Here's a CB1100F pin from my parts stash. All look the same visually, so you have something incorrect there if the part number on the package is correct.

I have had both silver and black spring caps

Contacted the seller to see if they'll refund me for them.

If mine still look fine then I'll just go ahead and reuse them.

Better to get new ones just in case sometimes parts that are tough to access are best to just find new replacements and bite the bullet. Pulling the motor to change them later is not fun...

You don't say the exact model of 650 so I've assumed you mean the 1979 CB650Z.

I ordered based on the parts diagram for a 1982 Honda CB650SC Nighthawk.

Part #28 on both sites.

I've ordered other OEM items using part numbers from these sites and they have been correct. I believe this could be a packaging issue or the websites have the wrong part numbers displayed.

Might be a parts website issue:

91103-259-000 - Comes up as a 10.2x11.5 roller
91101-377-000 - Comes up as a 10.2x11.5 roller
91101-259-000 - Comes up as a 4x13 roller <-- One that shows up for the CB650SC

Part number 91101-377-000 shows up for a 1982 CB650C.

Partzilla offers both however Babbits says 91101-377-000 supersedes 91103-259-000.

That's a little annoying but oh well, I'll get the right part this time and double check the other 650's when I need parts.

It depends on the exact model of CB650. We only got the 650Z in Europe and the UK so I presume it's that engine as we have no knowledge of the others. The springs and spring caps are the same numbers as you ordered. They are the same as fitted to the 650C but not the 650SC according to CMS.

However your picture shows what to me is clearly a 500/550 size roller not a 650SC roller.

It's possible that it's a parts book error but if so it's showing on CMS as well and that would mean everyone is showing the same error, which is possible but unlikely unless the error was made by Honda initially.

Are you 100% sure your model is a 650SC? Engine not been replaced by an earlier model like the Z or the C?

Frame says CB650SC where the VIN is and the panels said Nighthawk on them too.

I also have the adjustable handlebars that go through the triple tree rather than get clamped down on the top. Triple tree has 5 holes, not 3.

My choke lever is also on the clutch assembly, not on the triple tree.

Yeah, it isn't in question which model 650 you have. I think I know what's going on, and this is going to sound wild:

All of the parts catalogs have that roller for the 1982 CB650SC listed wrong. Every single one of them that I usually use says the same thing, and that has to be incorrect. Aside from the black paint and a little bit of final gearing, there is nothing different about the 1982 CB650SC motor than the rest of the CB650 line. The starter clutches are all the same.

I think if you are able to get your hands on a set of rollers with P/N 91103-259-000, you'll be perfectly good to go.

Yeah I'd agree with that. Sounds like Honda dropped the ball on this one. Either 91103-259-000 or 91101-377-000 should work perfectly.

Yeah I managed to find a place local that has 91101-377-000 so I went and ordered those.

Cost less than the 4X13 rollers too

Maybe sell the others on Ebay? or return to seller.

Shipping back to seller will cost half of what I bought them for so I'm going to try reselling them.

Dug into it a bit more and those 4X13 rollers are actually part of a needle bearing assembly for the crankshaft out of C72, C77, C78, CA72, and CA77 models from the 60's.

For whatever reason, the CB650 got mixed in with that part number.
