  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
The weather here has been awful over the last few days, miserable cold and rain. Yesterday though, the clouds parted and as I'm still semi-retired, I decided a ride was in order. Now I've taken 4 bikes across to the auction place, and I left my spare helmet and winter jacked at Spotty's place for when I get my club plate for the VMax and ride it home, so as I needed to go over to my storage unit to collect my other helmet and jacket, I decided to sort out the issues on the K0, and hopefully take it for a ride.

Last time I rode it I forgot to turn the fuel off, so when I put a fresh battery in it a couple of weeks ago I was horrified to see that the tank was empty. I assumed that the fuel had made it's way into the crankcases, so on my way over to the storage place I bought 5 litres of house brand oil, and a drain pan. I also stopped at a gas station and bought 5 litres of 98 RON fuel. As it turned out, there was no fuel in the crankcase or oil tank, by the look of the ruined paint on the bottom of the airbox it looks like that's where the fuel ran out, but I dropped it out and refilled it with fresh oil.

I tipped the fresh gas into the tank and fired it up. It missed and farted for a bit, then settled into an idle. I checked the voltage input and saw that it wasn't charging, with only 12.1 volts across the terminals, no matter what RPM's it was turning. Hmmnnn. I removed the sprocket cover and saw that the green wire had come undone, so reconnected it, but no bueno. I thought about riding it with just the juice that was in the battery, but didn't relish the thought of waiting on the side of the road for a tow truck in 50 degree temps. I took a closer look at the wiring and saw that the 3 AC wires from the stator had somehow melted together, so carefully separated them. I didn't have any insulation tape, so used some gaffa tape to insulate them from each other, and checked the voltage again, and it was charging, with around 13.5V @ 3000 RPM. Good enough.

I rode to the nearest gas station and filled it, then took off for a quick 60 mile ride. I didn't want to go much further as it was threatening rain, so I took one of my favourite routes, and stopped for a pic.

K0 Wednesday 11 June 2025 1 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I continued on until I started losing any feeling in my fingers, then turned for home. I got a little rain on the way back, but not enough to soak thru my pants. The K0 was running really well, and I think I might have to go for another ride today. It'd be nice if it was just a tad warmer, but any day when it's not raining is a good day. #14 down. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Well done Terry….. Last time out I took the cb750K1 and reminded myself why I’ll never sell it! Worth the effort.

Thanks John, yeah the K0 is in my “forever” list, it really is a great bike to ride. The Yamiya pipes are quite loud compared to the Delkevic pipe, and there doesn’t seem to be any loss of power, so I’m quite happy with it. I will definitely be doing more rides on it this year. ;D

Nice shot.

Thanks Greg, that’s one of my favourite spots to take a pic of my bikes. I’ve got to ride on a dirt road to get there, but it’s worth it. ;D

Terry - nice job on the repair, nice photos, that wiring would put me off the road for a month.

Don - I have dreamed a similar dream:
I had a daughter in Nashville and another in DC. That would make a nice 10-14 day loop for me.
I never did it, didn’t want to go alone, CB not setup for travel. Daughters are closer to home now, CB is ready to go, I can make that loop in 80 miles and be home for dinner nowadays.

I saw this VTX1300 nearby recently. 2004, $3000

Ride 6     166 miles   72f   47.6 mpg

I met my BMW buddy Jim at the fountain in Plymouth for a full day of riding, no airborne smoke, no rain, moderate temps. He tapered his usual mileage from 300 and I stretched a bit to 166. Jim showed me some new roads and I showed him some new roads. Our destination was the West Texas Barbecue outside of Jackson. First stop was Bandemeer Park in Ann Arbor, theres is a disc golf adjacent, bicycling hiking canoeing some homeless, some plumbing available. A big project ongoing, tunneling under the RR so pedestrians and bicycles don’t have to become trespassers to walk across the tracks. I got Jim’s photo on the one lane bridge he’s never been across before.
On to Jackson, Huron River Drive, Cavanaugh Lake Rd, Clear Lake Road, Trist Rd, Seymour Rd, all primo motorcycle roads. When we arrived at West Texas disappointment set in as it’s closed Monday-Tuesday. We made do with a burger in town instead at the old Michigan Central RR freight house. Jackson was/is a RR town, the RR was there in the 1830’s helping to develop Michigan. The big yards are gone, the big brick buildings still stand but have been repurposed.
We made our way to the old prison. The walls still stand, the admin buildings are condos, a brick street remains, a big wooden guy is chained to a stool in a fenced lot.
Last stop on Sharon Valley road in a nice stand of trees a good photo op. I did better last time I was here.
Arriving home about 6pm I was whipped, promptly fell asleep in the easy chair…. with a big smile on my face!

At 166 miles I was not yet on reserve, but pretty close to it.
The BMW holds more (26.5L+4L res) mileage is a bit less.

Thanks Kevin, well I can't remember when I last rode the K0, I think it was this year, but yeah, I had an idea what was wrong, but I tend to just get on the next bike and ride it rather than fix it. I discovered 2 busted spokes on the back wheel of the Harley Sportster months ago and haven't ridden it since. To be fair I did look for replacement spokes, but the back wheel on mine is an 18" wheel, not the standard 16", and I haven't had any luck finding spokes that I know will fit. I think I'll have to re-install the OEM 16" wheel for the time being, so I can ride it again. Anyway, I'm hoping that I get the paperwork back for the VMAX so I can do a ride on it soon. ;D

219 km. on the wing for #45. Beautiful windy day 22c. Tomorrow is the start of the CVMG bike rally in Paris, On. and we are going to ride down for that. Saturday is the best day usually but the forecast is for rain that day.

Hi, Kevin.
It is a kebab in bread. Like a normal lunch, ca 30 minutes.

Ca: $14US with a coke.
I could have taken salad on a plate  for free while waiting to be served.
That restaurant has extra tasty spicy sauces.

Here when I had taken an included free  salad too.  I grabbed various stuff from separate containers. A "pizza salad" almost like coleslaw + corn, olives and feferoni (mild saulty jalapenos) as the kebab also has.

From an earlier ride this year, April 3. Kebab plate with fries. mmmmm ;D ;D

The old English bikes are nice too see. I do not see many of them here today as I did in the early 80's.

A restored one that does not leak oil is extra.

Finally summer weather! 24-27*C ;) ;)
It was around 24*C when started the ride around 11 am.
27*C when back home 4 pm.

Ransta- Malingsbo- Ludvika- Smedjebacken- Säter- Hedemora- Norberg- Fagersta-Ängelsberg- Salbohed where i ate lunch and dinner in one.
I had thoughts to stay elsewhere for food during the ride. But why buy something not as tasty as my favourite place kebab plate with fries + salad.

I saw a red Mustang while eating. Nice sound.

Ride 7    76 miles    72f     AQI 32

Father’s Day is tomorrow but we joined together (12 of 16) this morning at Gest Omelettes, yum, and my son asked if I wanted to ride this afternoon. Of course I said yes: perfect temps, air quality much improved, sunshine! So we made our way to Dexter for coney dogs and root beer, and made it home safely in about 3 hours. Leaving me enough time to mow the back yard…. Shoulda rode a couple more hours…

  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
After working for 50 years, I'm really struggling with the concept of not having to wait for the weekend to go for a ride. On Friday I was sitting out in the patio enjoying a smoke and coffee in mid 40's (F) temps, wondering what I was gonna do to fill my day, and realised that I didn't have to wait to Sunday before I could go for a ride. Woohoo!

I drove over to the storage unit and fired up the K0 again, it started right up and we were on the road again. I filled it up again and was surprised that is getting around 50 MPG? Not sure why, but not complaining, considering that I saw "The Ton" a couple of times on my previous ride. Last ride my fingers froze after only 30 miles or so, so this time I tried wearing some thin mechanics gloves under my winter gloves. Not those super thin gloves about the same thickness as a condom, but the ones made from material that's been rubber dipped. My fingers felt pretty good for the first 40 miles or so, but were still sore by the time I got home, although they didn't require much thawing out, so I guess they were partially successful. Of course I had to stop and take some pics.

K0 Friday 13 June 2025 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I thought about stopping for food, but I didn't feel like sitting outside in the low 50's, and anyway I had a delicious leftover half pizza from the previous evening to heat up in my sandwich maker thingy. Anyway, the K0 is running great, although it could do with a decent wash. It might have to wait until summer for that though. Ride #15 in the can, and looking forwards to ride #16. ;D

Yes Kelly, good eye, his is a ‘98 Magna.
87hp
550lbs
Chain drive
The Magna replaced his beginner bike, a GS 500, and it has stayed as his Concours 1400 and his CB 900 Hornet came and went. All his good choices without my counsel. This being Father’s Day we found some time to spend together. The photos are from the gallery, precious, our first ride together, Derek with my original Brooks leather at 15 it fit him perfectly

Woohoo!

Terry, it’s so nice, I’m 8 years into retirement and I have learned that everyday is Saturday, woohoo!
There’s a bit of a downside to that when you have forgotten what day it really is.
