Got a 1.5 hp buffer from sears on sale a few weeks ago for 129$-  http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?cat=Bench+Power+Tools&pid=00921181000&vertical=TOOL&subcat=Bench+Grinders&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes
For the aluminum parts I've been cleaning them with simple green and a scotchbrtie pad to get the bad oxidation off and them hitting them with the brown tripoli compound.  It doesn't reall take that long... I've mounted my buffer so I can sit vs standing.  I've already almost gone through one of the buffing wheels and will need to order some from Eastman - they are about 8 bucks...

I also got a wire wheel that I can put on the buffer to clean up bolt heads etc... I have an 8" that I got form sears (steel) and a 6" brass that I got at home depot.  great for cleaning rust of chrome bolt heads, wheels, fork tubes etc...
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Wow greenjeans, your project's looking great! I'm especially impressed by how little money you've spent too!

What color paint did you use on the wheels...they look almost like anodized aluminum. Yours are the first painted wheels I've seen that I like.

Keep the pictures coming!

Believe it or not it's Duplicolor annodized bronze wheel paint.... not sure how durable it will be in the long run, but it seems pretty hard...no scratches mounting the tire.  So far so good.

Will try and post some tonight.... haven't really got too much further.  I'm working on 2 at the same time....  spent most of the weekend cleaning and painting bits & pieces (engine mounts, foot pegs etc)  Polished up and put new seals on the other forks.  Hope to have both chassis rolling and ready for the engines by the weekend....    Anybody have a source for the short style fork boot/ dust covers - not the originals that look like an accordian but the short ones - about 1" tall or so ?
1 bike gets the original treatment & the other gets a cafe treatment.  Thanks for the encouragement

Greenjeans, I've got two CB750 wheel hubs that need polishing...would you be interested in making a little extra money?

Cycle Recycle carried them, but I don't see them in thier catalog now.  You should contact them at:

Some more goofy shots.... In keeping with my ghetto-fabulous elbow grease special, I cleaned the spokes on my wire wheel, wiped 'em down w/ some acetone and gave them a quick suirt of paint.   If only you could grow spokes.....  Also polished up the hubs, took a wire wheel to the center / ribbed sections and painted the rims.
Again, these were just a little too pitted and rusted to shine up nice - even with the buffer....  so, 5 more bucks on a can of wheel paint - good as new.   Pressed in some new bearings (my brother-in-law gave me a hydraulic press that he bought on e-bay for 40 bucks) so maybe tomorrow I'll lace them up.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

You can never have enough bailing wire.....
I had about 30 bits and pieces of stuff (engine mounts, brackets, foot pegs etc) hanging from a 1x3 with bailing wire.
soaked them in some simple green to soften up the 30 years of grime and dirt and gave them a good cleaning.  Got the old paint off with the invaluable wire wheel.
wiped them down with acetone and gave them a shot of primer & then some semi-gloss black.  VERY tedious....took half the frickin day - but, it had to be done.

How about some opinions about racing stripes...... One of these I'm thinking that I'll paint the tank & side covers black (maybe a semi-gloss - still on the fence)
I figured I'll do the racing stripes in an ivory / creme color with a very thin 1/16" piinstripe on the outsides to match the rim color....
*the tank is sitting on the silver frame - the black frame in the background will get the black tank.    I was going to take the Honda badges off the tank, but maybe I'll keep them.   I was also going to bang some knee dents in that tank....stay tuned for that.    What do you guys think about the proportions of the stripes ?

I'm digging the project. I like the stripes and the pin stripes would be a nice touch.

Man, I know I said it already but I'm REALLY digging that rim color! I like the asymmetrical racing stripes too...kinda gives it an early '60s "Speed Racer" look. I think a 750F Supersport tank would look killer on there with the pinstripes.

I'm a little confused...Did you manage to get the hub polished without taking the spokes off?? If so, is there a trick to this?

No.... I took the spokes out.  you could probably do it some how with them in there, but I don't wanna know how.
It was just easier for me to take it apart, clean, polish, and re-lace them.   It's not as hard as it seems - then again, I spent my youth racing mountain bikes so I've re-laced more wheels than I care to admit.  There's a great post about it that was made a while back:  http://www.sohc4.us/forums/index.php?topic=19575.msg204152#msg204152

Guess I should mention that I'm doing two bikes at the same time.... one is just a few days behind the other.... so, hopefully by the end of the weekend I'll have both chassis rolling and the engines mounted again.  Then I can start mocking up what I'm goint to do with the rear fender/seat pan & electrics..
