I would disagree with Dave500.  You can see the stamped "stop" on the holding plate that is facing forward.  The petcock in the photo is on reserve.

If you look very closely there is a small arrow pointing opposite to lever which is pointing at OFF

You can download a PDF of the owners manual here:

It explains the petcock setting/positions and other useful information.  :)

the words on the plate refer to the actual thumb lever part, did they have reversed taps eleswhere?

no worries, that plate does have the stop marked in a different position, not a real clear photo though?if malxerr could post a new sharp clear photo it might show how the overseas ones got marked?,the levers action would be the same though, thatll be a 6 pack of cyber beers please.

Easy way to find out. Takes off the pipes and the one position where it doesn't spill fuel everywhere is Stop.

It can be confusing, Honda could have done a better job at making it clear. And not all Hondas are the same?

On my Kaw, the handle is up for reserve, no question there.

No! I don't think so.
The text is is upright but the labels run across the top of the plate rather than the bottom as in the picture Dave posted.

In the years between 1974-1978 it seems like Honda went "petcock crazy".  If you have owned lots of Hondas from this period it seems every model and year had a unique, subtly different petcock! changing from one side of the tank to the other, mounting styles, different bung sizes, different numbers of outlets, and different layouts for the selector positions.  You have to read the fine print on every single one very carefully!

+1 on this post about petcock crazy.
Most of my bikes are different.
All the petcocks were made by Keihin for Honda.
I'm sure there was collaboration and specs that Honda sent to Keihin to match the tanks.
The same Petcocks were used by other manufacturers.Kawasaki,Suzuki etc...

KZ400 Has the identical petcock as the CB350F

That is nowhere near a stock petcock for a CB350F. The fuel outlet comes out horizontally and at an angle, not vertically as in that one. They might work, but I think it would need some work in order to do so. There are also aftermarket 350F petcocks but they come with two outlets and also don't fit properly. OEM 350F petcocks go for upwards of $150 because they are rare and the only ones that work well on the 350F.

It's the replacement honda one that will work.(pictures are for reference only) The factory one has1 port not 2.
My point was that petcocks were made by Keihin for all Japanese bikes. And a original KZ 400 petcock is identical to a CB350F,1 port horizontal

Don't want to get into an unnecessary argument, but for the sake of accuracy they definitely are not "identical."

https://images.cmsnl.com/img/partslists/honda-cb350f-four-general-export-fuel-tank-cock_bigma000079f11_07ef.gif

I've owned both 1974 bikes. They only overlapped one year, 1974, and the later KZ400 petcocks are very different. The earlier one might work (looks like they mount the same), but the fuel outlet comes out from a different spot at a different angle.

CB350F groups are full of people complaining about how non-original petcocks don't work, petcocks made for other bikes don't work, and how hard it is to find an oem one.

There is no need to argue I should have used the word similar.

My point being was that Keihin made all the petcocks and they were very similar in design.
An OEM unit is made by Keihin in a honda Bag or box.

I think a lot of the bodies have the same or very similar shapes with various potential outlets -- some petcocks have what look like blocked or unused ones.
