Advice needed on engine case points cover repair
« on: July 02, 2025, 07:22:17 AM »
Where my points cover screw in to the engine casing on my 350f, the screw in part on the engine casing is broken. See image below circled in red. The cover will screw in and hold, but any suggestions on how to best fix the damage?

Welcome!
That's an ouch.
It might be dicey but something like JB Weld might be able to be built up there and drilled and tapped. You'd have to make a form to shape it. There may be other similar easily shaped products that others on the forum know about that would be easier to shape. Have to really clean the area so it will stick.
Just guessing.

Almost like my CB750 case.

It had enough threads for an M6 bolt to shoot in place, tightened until bottom.
I had sprayed it with Teflon spray first and let it dry before tighten it.

After that JB Weld, the epoxy version that need several hours to harden.
Unscrew bolt when hardened.

This was an empty set of cases. So important to test mount crankshaft and all covers to verify no other issues.

The lower case was glass beaded to find more. Lower fastening ear on right side was welded.

Thanks for the replies. I’ll try the JB Weld. My CB350F was already damaged when I got the bike, but I’m thinking it was over tightened at some point

Probably a dropped bike for my cases.
Lower case was welded by a PO. So that can be something to look for.

First thing after cleaning with a power washer inside all oil channels was to assemble it with a crankshaft and bearings.
It rotated nice all the way to 25Nm in 5Nm steps each time.
All clearances were close for all journals/bearings (green), matched the case numbers (B) vs crank (A).
No other seen damages. (Same clearances I got with my K6 engine).

I had warranty from the guy I bought it from ;D

Later adaptation for bigger bore and got fresh paint.

There used to be an epoxy that you could put over a fastener that had a release agent so the fastener could be removed from it after it had set up. I don't remember the name, it might be a JB Weld or Permatex product.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Coat a new screw with wax, that will aid in removal. Install it on the remaining threads, build it up with JB weld ensuring you get in into the screw threads. It should last another 50 years as long as you don't tighten it with a impact wrench
