Possibly the youngest member?
« on: June 20, 2005, 11:40:46 PM »
I'm only 17, and just a couple steps away from motoring off WITHOUT the supervision of a parent. I've got my rockin' 73' sohc4, a licence, a title; and i just need to insure and register the bike, and take the MSF course. SO CLOSE!!

I'd like to know of a younger member, just out of pure fun.

At least some of you choose not to ride a crotch rocket. So many start with those then years later realize the CBs are real bikes.

Ha!  23 here.  Never even considered getting a crotch rocket or a Harley.  Some of it had to do with $ the rest with the fact that I know what I like and love the whole "MY GOD, HES DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT" effect.  Plus I consider the 550 the ultimate beginners bike.  Perfect ballance of weight and power.  Simple mechanics so its great for learning how to work on a bike.  Not to heavy or powerful and when you get real comfortable on it, it has plenty of pep and you can lay that baby down to the pegs around corners.  I get tired of young bucks whos first bike is a powerful crotch rocket, I say youre gonna die, too fast, too much bike.  I get tired of women whos first bike is an 883 sporster,  I say your gonna drop it..too heavy, too much bike.  550...just right. ;)  Congrats three sticks.  Have fun and ride safe man!

I went the other way.  Rode SOHC4's for thirty-six years and bought a crotch rocket at age 61.  Which do I like most?  Well, that depends on what I'm doing.  If it's a long way down the road the CRB1000F comes out of the garage.  If it's around town or a short, slow putt for relaxation, the CB650 comes out.  Not that the CB is any stranger to the road.  I spent a couple summers commuting to school 130 miles away on it (weekly, not daily) and have taken a few longer trips on it.  However my back won't handle the upright position and my fanny won't take the CB seat long term anymore.  The Corbin seat and forward lean of the CBR make it possible to ride for a couple hours at a time before stopping for a walk around.  And I must admit it's fun to see the expressions when the helmet comes off and people realize it's an old fart on that crotch rocket.

I hate to say it, but you guys sound kind of cute  :D Statistically, people who start out on smaller bikes ride more over a lifetime.

personally, i don't really like crotch rockets or newer harleys at all. i really do prefer these older bikes. british cafe racers and older sohc4's. Just like the current rice burner craze, i beleive crotch rockets are overrated that hardly anyone who rides them ever wear protective gear. I live right at the shore in new jersey and rt. 37 is full of the ricers at night. i can hear them all from my room.

so i do prefer the older alternative bikes.

(Tears...) Sniff...., and I thought I should be one of the youngest with 34....

I'm impressed (seriously). In Spain the used bikes price remains steady after they are older than 10 years, to increase for bikes older than 25 years with the idea that any old bike deserve the "classic" status. Nobody here would buy a 20 year-old bike when they can get a younger one for the same price.

ask anyone i've ridden with, i'll go faster around corners than a straight line; it's more fun.

oh and three sticks is a nickname my dad gave me. (i don't remember how long ago), because i'm William F. Dudley III. get it?

and hey man, i can dig "ranting old fools". they know stuff, you know?

Well I am 28 and a girl and now I own a CB 750F that's just 1 month younger then me! (That's the reason I bought it, nice to see the fading colors).
Anyway I have been driving bikes since I was 18 and I agree, anbody can drive fast along a straight line. It's cornering and pulling away at the trafficlights that defines motorcycle driving for me.

Gee I must pull to fast around corners, I have a habit of spinning out my rear tire! But the foot plant always works! This is from a stoplight by the way!

Wow, the M:F ratio is pretty much as bad as in my engineering classes or at work at an auto parts store.  I need to find something different.... (oh, 21 y.o., and I ride what I do because it was in the barn, but it has grown on me)

At the risk of jacking this thread with another of 'ol uncle Orca's stories...

Really glad to see so many of the younger riders taking the MSF course.  When I started out, I don't think they had the MSF course, or if they did, no one ever told me about it.  I had a slightly different sort of training.  I lived at the time in a rooming house (I was military and 18) and one of the other boarders was an older guy who drove  trucks for a living and had a really sharp CB750.  He helped me find and haul home my first bike, a CL350 Twin.  We spent a week getting it cleaned up and running right so I could start riding to prepare for my license exam.  Coming home one afternoon, I found the intersection closest to our house closed by emergency vehicles, all I could see was a bike laying on it's side, but was too far away to identify the bike.  After backtracking a block I rushed home from the opposite direction, I was relieved to see my friend standing in the driveway next to his bike.  His first words to me were "Time for your first motorcycle lesson, walk down to the corner, and come back when you know what happened and we'll talk..."

Well, it was pretty bad, there were 2 bikes, a 900 and a 1100, the riders were both 17, the guys (both students at the nearby high school) had been drag racing on a residential street during their lunch break.  I'm sure that at the speed they were travelling, the old lady didn't see them when she started across the street in her oldsmobile.  One t-boned her right side door, over the car and into the street, the other swerved behind her and went into a highspeed wobble... kept it upright for a hundred feet then dumped it.  The old woman went into a tree.

She had a heart attack following the accident...
Wobble guy, was lucky, only wound up in intensive care.
Door guy, well, they were pushing up his brains with a push broom while I was there...

No Helmets,
New Bikes,
No Experience,

I learned alot that day about what NOT to do on a bike.

Oh, BTW, I'm 47 and while I've had to make a few mistakes on my own, I'm still learning and living.

How come I never see any younger riders around here on old bikes? Or women for that matter?

oh and three sticks is a nickname my dad gave me. (i don't remember how long ago), because i'm William F. Dudley III. get it?
That's funny, I'm a Dudley too. Except that's my first name (just don't tell anyone  ;) ). Some of my friends like to call me "Ivy" sometimes because I'm a 4th generation Dudley (IV get it?). Actually, I have several other nicknames, but those aren't so nice.  >:( ;D ;D

thought about naming my son the fourth - but changed my mind because of "ivy"...not that there's anything wrong with that of course - some may consider it quite a cool nickname, you for instance, but it just seemed too much like asking for the kid to have a nickname he didn't want...

maybe i'll change my mind if i ever HAVE a son  ;D

No, not Do-right, but would you believe you're not the first to ask?  ;D

I'm not saying I like "Ivy" (they rarely call me that anymore really - usually it's "Bubba" or "Bubby" (don't know how that came about)) but when you're growing up, just about anything's better than Dudley. But, i'm an old man now and it really doesn't bother me anymore. Kinda proud of it, really. Not too many of us around (for obvious reasons). I figure if my dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa made it through, I guess I can too. Kinda like "A Boy Named Sue." I'm better for it.

FWIW, I'm NOT naming my son (fingers crossed) Dudley Pierce V !!!  >:( ::) ;D ;D ;D

I'm 22, riding a 27-year-old CB650. Wow, I didn't realize the bike was that old 'til this thread came up. I guess that would explain some of the problems I've had. Running good now, though!

IMHO you're not over the hill 'til you hit 55. Then it starts going down, and you're by no means done for!

My dad's 54 and my mom's 53, still raising an 8-year-old daughter (youngest of 9). I'm right in the middle.

Well I'm 47 and hadnt riden a bike since early 70s.  Always liked the Hondas and Kawasakis when I was younger.  Found a mothballed 74 550 for $200 spent several months and a few hundred more and now its in pretty good running order.  Plan to strip bike this winter to paint frame and other parts.  Right now it runs good but aint too pretty.  My wife enrolled me in a MSC for my birthday and it sure helped.  Had real good instructors that taught things I never would have thought about.  MSC should be a requirement for beginners and Im sure some experienced riders could benefit as well.
Met an older guy on a full dress Harley last week, he said he had a 550 when he was younger.  He said it WAS a good bike---I told him it still is.
young or old, experienced or beginner I think we all share the joy of riding and the challenge of keeping these beautiful machines on the road.
